Jen, you can certainly watch videos about the making of 2001 and all those great special effects. There are plenty of them available online. But if you REALLY want to get the whole story on how this masterpiece was created, I *strongly* recommend reading "Space Odyssey" by Michael Benson. ➡️ https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Space-Odyssey/Michael-Benson/9781501163944

HAL computer is one letter off of IBM computer

Kubrick's acid trip

That's the philosophical stuff, you know? ;-)

Adam from Germany

That was the best reaction you've done so far. You are so in tune with sound design, no one else does that. And now I want a "geometric shapes are so nefarious" t-shirt.

John Armbruster

Haven't played it but I want to!

Jen M

If you've played Metal Gear Solid then you'll now understand many of the references Kojima made to this movie across the series of games. The most notable being Octacon and Snake revealing their names at the end of the first game as Hal and Dave respectively.

James Knight

The sequel “2010: The Year We Make Contact” is not as good, but I’d still call it a worthy sequel. It does answer some of the questions you might have after watching “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Questions like: What happened to David Bowman? What is the monolith? What was the monolith doing around Jupiter? Why did HAL act the way he did?

Rune Schaumann

It’s brilliant, and so is his ongoing series on Apocalypse Now.

"Let's get one for the 'gram" is still funny to me!

There is a series made by a Youtuber CinemaTyler about the making of this movie. It's seven parts and he shows behind the scene's and interviews. It's worth a watch if you want to know more about the movie. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGciYgiR4atGcBOIuOmLQBXUj692TV6R0

Great review! 2010 isn’t as good, but has some very heart warming scenes

I think my favourite vfx in the whole film is the pen in zero gravity, mainly because it's such a simple effect done so well.

Lawrence of Arabia is a must!

Jeff Preiss

Parody-wise… this one gets me every time. It’s perfect! (& short;) https://youtu.be/JepKVUym9Fg?si=auvY5lNdt8lNOryC

Just swapped the rough cut for the finished YouTube video, including the wrap up!

Jen M

Great! Just great! I loved the full length and thought it might be a hard one to cut, but your edit shows your insight into the mechanics of the film and it alone is quite an essay. Can’t wait for it to include the wrap up. Will you include all of it? It’s brilliant! It reminded me so much of my own first viewing in ‘68 at 12… I was in shock. I never knew I could love a film so much… Thank you for allowing me to relive that. While there’s virtually no film to compare to it, it was part of a movement (New American Cinema) of independently minded movies that were in a strong dialogue with the (far superior) films coming out of Europe. Here’s what comes to mind: A bunch of films by Robert Altman, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, Nashville, 3 Women… also: Dog Day After Noon, All The President’s Men, Klute, Easy Rider, A Woman Under the Influence, Killer of Sheep, Shampoo, Chinatown… I’ll stop there and sign off with much appreciation!

I believe that was Kubrick’s real daughter in that phone call from the space station.

HAL sings Daisey Bell as his mind is going. The very first computer to have a voice synthesizer was programed to sing this song for a demonstration back in the early 1960's.

If you want to see a brief but hilarious classic Simpsons parody of the trippy, psychedelic flight scene - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15DAthgdKTc (Sorry. I don't know how to make a hyperlink here.) PS: EEEeeeEEEeeeEEEeee‼

Henchman Twenty1

It's just a myth. IBM supported the film. Their logo can be seen several times. HAL stands for "Heuristic ALgorithm".

Sven

I'm not sure if it's true, but the urban legend about how the name "HAL" came about was that Clarke and Kubrick took 1 letter back from "I" (H), 1 letter back from "B" (A), and 1 letter back from "M", (L), and "IBM" becomes "HAL". This movie was made just after the National Center for Supercomputing was established, so maybe this was the first existential discussion that pop culture was having about AI.

If you're ever in the mood for more long, slow-paced but intensely immersive and fascinating films which made movie history - there's always "Lawrence of Arabia" and "There Will Be Blood". The first one finally started getting some attention on YouTube - would love to see your reaction to it :)

Michael Bauer

Amazing movie - and a great reaction! For a first watch, it's truly amazing how quickly you picked up on the significance and meaning of every scene and plot point! With your ideas about encountering alien life - I think you'd love Stanislav Lem's "Solaris". This book's depiction of contact with something truly alien is the best I've read or seen... raising all kinds of philosophical questions, making us doubt our perceptions, unable to make sense of them. There's a film-adaptation by the iconic Andrej Tarkovsky - and it does really well in depicting the psychological challenges of our protagonist, but it leaves out a lot of the more philosophical aspects. Still definitely worth watching - but the book offers a lot more depth still. Steven Soderbergh also adapted the book, producing a movie which sadly but expectedly pales in comparison to Tarkovsky's film, but is still okay.

Michael Bauer

I appreciate it.

Jen M

Haven't watched this yet just because I've seen it a million times, but I'm betting Jen's gonna try to hit those high notes in the theme, haha. And if she can hit the high notes in "The IT Crowd" she's gonna nail it.

Mike Miner

I'll watch it on yttv, the little girl on the video phone,Dr.Floyd's daughter, she's Stanley Kubrick's daughter♡

Celeste McAllister

Even though I won't be watching I will for sure leave it running in the background and ofc make sure to leave a comment and a like when it hits YouTube 👍
