This episode has a tragic side story: David Rappaport, a well-known British actor, had originally been cast for the part of Kivas Fajo. Rappaport struggled with depression during his life, and attempted suicide shortly after filming some scenes as Fajo. (Rappaport later died by suicide on 2 May 1990, three days before the airing of this episode). Saul Rubinek was brought in to take over the role and complete the episode.

Some other folks have also suggested that Data start destroying Fajo's collection to force him to release our dear android, but a) he'd be destroying priceless, irreplaceable works of art, and b) if any other pieces had been stolen it would have been unfair to their respective owners. And I feel that Fajo, with that personality of his, would have rather destroyed Data than give him up. Also, that look that Data gives Riker when he says that something must have occurred during transport in regard to the disruptor, and then the look he gives Fajo when he says that he is, "Only and android" shows that Data IS more. He fired the weapon at Fajo, he lied about it to Riker and he was gloating in his own way over his former captor. Data is able to exceed his programing, and that is called Growth.
