Bad Boys (1995) Full Length Reaction

BTW: The Starsky & Hutch reference refers to the TV show. The movie came out 9 years after this.

Michael Bay was a great action movie director and has made some truly iconic movies in the 90's early 2000's. At one point though, he just kinda gave up even attempting to put a coherent narrative in his movies. Of course, the story was never really the focal point of his movies. It was more a vehicle for explosions, patriotic imagery and spinning close up shots with some epic music on top. But there was enough to tie things together and I can't deny that it worked really well. In my opinion his last good movie was probably the first Transformers movie. Before that Pearl Harbor got a lot of flak but Bad Boys II came out after. After the success of Transformers the studio just threw money at him for special effects and his movies became incoherent messes of 30 minutes action sequences with a few lines of dialogue thrown in between. Like the Fast and Furious franchise, the Transformers movies still made a lot of money but probably lost favor with the kind of people who pay attention to who the director of a movie is. They also started to fill the movies with really obvious product placement to pay for all the explosions, which just underlined how little it mattered to tell an immersive story. So coupled with Michael Bay being super awkward in interviews and as a result often appearing quite arrogant, his reputation took some big hits along the way. That doesn't change the fact that, when he was at his best, he made some amazing action movies.
