Pleasantville (1998) Full Length Reaction

I know you want it to stay pleasant around here, but — there are so many things … that are so much better. Like silly, or sexy, or dangerous … or  brief. And every one of those things is in you all the time, if you just have the guts to look for them.

I loved this one! Funny, heartfelt, beautiful to look at and deeper than it seems at first. I loved the whole cast but especially Jeff Daniels tugged at my heartstrings. What other movies has he done that we should check out?

This is one of those movies that's hard to put into a genre for me. I like to organize movies by decade and genre (in Collections tab) but I don't know what to call this one. It's funny but it's not a straight 'comedy', more of a drama. What do you guys think?

Pleasantville (1998) Full Length Reaction

A lovely reaction, Jen. When "Galaxy Quest" first came out, the trailer for "Pleasantville" was playing in the theaters. My kid sister and I, who were big trekkies, went to see GQ, and were just fascinated by the trailer. So my partner & I went to see it, and then spent the hour driving home arguing over whether it was modernist or postmodernist. (I think we now agree that it's a postmodernist piece that initially disguises itself as modernist. :) ) This was the first film in which I saw Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, William H. Macy, or Joan Allen. I'd seen Jeff Daniels in a few films before this, and of course Don Knotts had been famous for decades by this point. But all these actors became really big very soon after this, and I think this film was the catalyst. I think this is one of the great works of art on film. I think the more times you see it, the more layers there are. You've already touched on some. Another is the mural -- it bears some striking resemblances to Picasso's "Guernica", a political protest painting that was done, importantly, in black, white, and gray. Also there is the fact that the gesture in which David wipes away his (real) mother's tears is the exact same gesture as when he first puts make-up on his TV mom. And the music breaks my heart -- there's a certain theme (the slow strings in 3/4 time) that plays only in moments of tenderness, courage, or transformation, and I can't stop myself from tearing up. The cool jazz piece you were asking about is "Take Five" (1959) by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Of course the title comes from the time signature. ;)

Such a good movie as I said previously I went into this blind and not knowing anything and the first half of the movie I was thinking is it going to turn into a horror like invasion of the bodysnatchers type of thing and I was way off lol . Unique movie I really enjoyed it very much . Great seeing the actress who played the mum who ofcourse we know from face off and the bourne movies she's great 🙌 . Yeah this was a pleasant surprise indeed I had a fun time cheers Jen a wonderful pick this one 🫶
