2012 (2009) Full Length Reaction

My God!

Well just when I thought more stuff couldn't get destroyed than in the disaster movies (heretofore known as Apoca-Flix??!) I've already seen (The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day, Deep Impact) 2012 goes and tops them all! Holy crap, the villain side of me was like WOOOOOAHHHH 🔥🔥 I know disaster movies aren't for everyone but I just go with them and enjoy the destruction and catastrophe! Are there more disaster/Apoca-Flix movies (or alien or monster) we should check out?!

I thought the writing got weak at the end. killing off Gordon so John Cusacks character would have an easier time reconciliating with his wife. instead don't kill off the Russian girl, have her and Gordon get together.

GREENLAND is one of my fav disaster movie!

Love this movie, but Crust Displacement theory was disproven even before the movie was made based on pole shift. It it were to actually happen the earth crust would stop moving but the wing and waster will still be going 1200 mph. But we discovered that there is an ocean deep down bigger that all the oceans on the top.

Yes, please watch 'Godzilla' 1998, it's cheeseball movie and it's a lot of fun, Roland Emmerich knows how to make those ridiculous popcorn movies that are a lot of fun, even the teaser trailer was a lot of fun.

JPDotCom23

I just recently watched 'Gross Pointe Blank' for the first time, you should watch it, I think you'd like it a lot. He also did a movie with Al Pacino called 'City Hall', another movie you should watch. You should do a bunch of Pacino movies.

JPDotCom23

Apart from Cusack's daughter, every kid in this film is a complete arsehole

Patrick

First of Jen, I always felt that Independence Day had more survivors than any other Destruction movies I saw only because those Aliens never got the chance to go to Earth and conquer it. As far as this reaction from you it was the best. Yes to Godzilla 1998.

FranciscoGios

In my opinion, even a bad Godzilla like movie is still a good time.

I love disaster movies as well, and I really enjoyed this one, even though it had a few too many of the last second saves, but still a lot of excitement watching it.

Vwlss Nvwls

I thought you were leading up to a mention of the 1975 disaster movie ‘Earthquake’ (music by John Williams). Alas…

First impressions make a difference. The '98 Godzilla movie was so bad that Toho Studios took it as an insult and killed the franchise in the US for decades so I don't recommend it as your first impression. If you would like to see good movies start with the '54 Godzilla, then Godzilla Minus One (whenever it becomes available online), then if you're still in the mood, Shin Godzilla. After that feel free to do whichever other ones you want.

Who Are These People

I don't mind silly science in a silly story, like 'Independence Day', because when you put in aliens then nothing else has to make sense either. It's really just a fantasy movie. But this movie was so stupid I couldn't last more than 4 minutes. It's so fucking insulting when a writer just treats the audience like we're stupid and I'm so tired of it. Isn't anyone else tired of being disrespected by lazy writing? Fuck Emmerich. 2012 plays this patronizing game by throwing words like 'neutrinos' and 'quantum physics' at us to make us feel like we're smart. 2012 is the movie equivalent of playing peek-a-boo with an infant. What makes Jurassic Park a great classic? Michael Crichton knew what he was writing about and presented a fascinating concept. What makes 2001 a classic? Arthur C. Clarke, a man who had genuine curiosity that motivated him to pursue learning. What makes 2012 and every movie like it shit? The throngs of people who pay for it and make it profitable so that studios clog our screens with more shit. Have some self respect, people.

What a crazy movie 🥺 water is scary AF but I'd take it over being trapped underground anyday . Love the t-shirt Jen the colour is chefs kiss 😘 . At least the dog was safe 🥳 priorities 🙂 as daft as the movie was the utter destruction was something to see holy moly 😬 definitely a fun watch though and I always enjoy your outros 🙌 cheers Jen 🥂 and as always yes to all plus I say watch skull island too 👍

YES for Society Of The Snow - I watched it last week and I think it's become one of my favorite movies of all time. I read the book it's partly based on, a year ago now, and watchi9ng the movie was almost literally pages coming to life...

Great reaction, and I really enjoyed the 98’ Godzilla movie, highly recommended.

I always thought "The Core" was a fun one

Chris

i liked this movie except for lazy writing at the end. lets kill off Gordon so John Cusack can get back with the wife, lets kill off the rich Russian dude for no reason, lets kill off the Russian blond in a weird way. the best ending for me would have been, Russian guy dies, Gordon gets with blond girl and Cusack gets back with his ex.

Jen, if you wanna watch any movie, I’m fine with it. Is the 90’s Godzilla film a bad movie? Yes. Is it fun with the right perspective? It can be. Also for more disaster movies, there’s the 2006 remake Poseidon (with Kurt Russell and Emmy Rossum) which is fun for fun’s sake. And for any future choices, I think you can take recommendations and polls but at the end of the day, I think most of us on the Patreon are here for your perspective and I don’t mind if some of the choices aren’t my cup of tea. If we all agreed on everything, what would be the point? 🙂

Ian Forbes

I think 'Greeland' is a good movie, just for the different perspective than most movies like it. :D 'Don't Look Up' is also a really good movie. :)

Ha! I'm from Southern California, born and raised, and I won't get out of bed for an earthquake. They honestly happen pretty rarely. It's not like a regular thing, and when they do, they're usually small enough to not amount to much. My whole life, I've been told to prepare for the eventual "Big One", and at 45 Years old, it's yet to happen, at least on the scale that people talk about. There was a pretty big one in San Francisco, no where near me, in the 80s, I think, and part of the Bay Bridge collapsed. In '94, there was the Northridge quake, that was probably not as big, but was big enough that it caused some damage that was similar to a previous one from '71, but I just got lucky that my neighborhood was fine. All in all, in 45 years, I've yet to experience anything catastrophic.

Being a physics major, suspending my disbelief at this film is very difficult...neutrinos simply do not act this way. There is something called the "solar neutrino problem", which is where I am sure someone got the idea for the basis of the film, but we are bombarded by tens of billions of neutrinos every square centimeter, every second. That's a lot of flux, so any small change which would allow neutrinos to interact with matter like this, we'd see the effects all over the place. Its nice technobabble, but it itches. (I did like the boiling water in the neutrino observatory though, a cute touch)

And Being John Malkovich..

I hope you watch more John Cusack: Say Anything, Con Air, High Fidelity, Serendipity!

German director Roland Emmerich is one of these filmmakers who are quite original in their very own way. Basically highly successful, well known, and still controversial because one often hates or loves their work. Similar to Michael Bay. I remember seeing Stargate (1994) in our local cinema as a 12-year old movie buff and absolutely loved it, two years later Independence Day. What an experience it was. The venue was booked out, many of my classmates were there too and we all had so much fun watching it, ages before the streaming age (and the VFX still. holds up quite well, in my opinion..). Well.. then we were in the middle of the 90ies disaster movie wave (Volcano, Dante's Peak, Deep Impact, etc.) and basically they all revived the 70ies disaster flicks 20 years before.. Some were good, others just imitating... Emmerich sticked to his formula and - unfortunately - as I think, could never top again or evolve after 'Independence Day'. I had some hopes for 2012, before watching it at the cinema, but despite trying really hard, I couldn't take any part for serious anymore. Sure, if you're just in for the fun and ridiculous, silly amount of theoretical apoc-scenarios, it's the right movie for you :) I didn't motivate myself yet to see Emmerich's 'Anonymous' yet. (Anyone?). Perhaps this work of his might have set another, different note in his filmography. I can't say.. And eventually producers and other influential people in these gigantic productions might also be responsible for the cheap use of all these kitsch effects in his recent movies (please avoid Independence Day: Resurgence and 'Moonfall'.. ) Well, in the end, it's always the same thing it comes down to.. a money making machine.. In a way, I highly respect Emmerich and others like him. They've made it and do their thing on a damn big scale. But he's not a C.Nolan or D.Villeneuve or - always the gold standard - Stanley Kubrick. Their work is on another level too. But clearly on a certain intellectual level as well.. They always take the audience for serious, which is probably the main difference.

Marco Borromeo

It’s been a running gag for a while now that director Roland Emmerich hates Earth 🤣 That said, you still have Moonfall to look forward to, not counting his other movies where just disastrous things happen.

Julian San

Mad Max, Mad Max: The Road Warrior, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (co-starring, and with music from Tina Turner).

Jesus F Christ

All of these

"Don't look up" is a quite recent one. I liked it.

Grga Pitic

I think this one broke me or I got too old. I don't think I have watched any of the more recent disaster flicks. This one was just too over the top crazy for me. Dried up my interest in the genre. Although I don't know how many Big Budget Top Notch Cast disaster movies they made after this one. Most of the trailers I've seen since are more straight to DVD than big screen worthy.

TigerMyth

Volcano, Dante's Peak, Daylight, Deep Rising, Mimic, The Relic and Deep Blue Sea 😁🤓
