Jojo Rabbit (2019) Full Length Reaction

I think you'll find that metal is the strongest thing on the earth followed by dynamite and then muscles.

Ohhh my goodness I loved this movie so much. It's beautiful and hilarious and devastating and silly and horrifying and so many things all at once. Wonderful performances, stunning visuals, cool music. Truly unique and probably not for everyone but I really really loved it. My outro is a bit longer than usual because I couldn't stop gushing about it.

Jojo Rabbit (2019) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Just now watched it and couldn't believe how amazing/devastating it is. Hilarious, then tragic, then hilarious again. The entire cast was terrific, but Roman Griffin Davis (as Jojo) and Thomasin McKenzie (as Elsa) are wonderful together. If you're in the mood for another Sam Rockwell film in which he shows great kindness to a kid, I recommend The Way Way Back (2013).

That’s a good reaction.

Here is something about this movie that I absolutely love that many people don’t catch the first time they watch it — from the time of Jojo’s accident with the grenade, several comments are made about his injuries and how awful his face looks. Rebel Wilson’s character says ‘his face looks like a Picasso’ and that his leg is ‘deformed and pointless’ and Jojo says to his mother that he is ‘ugly like a monster’, ‘look[s] stupid’, and is a ‘deformed kid’. So we know he has a lot of negative thoughts about his self image and feels like somewhat of an outcast. Later on, as Elsa is telling Jojo about the Jews, we can see that he is beginning to fall in love with her. He stares at her face while she draws him a picture and seems amazed at the fantastical things she says. She goes on to tell him how Jews can read each other’s minds and he asks if they can read German minds - as if to say ‘Can you read MY mind? Do you know what I’m feeling right now?’ As he continues writing down what Elsa is telling him about the Jews, she mentions that they are attracted to shiny things and Jojo quickly interjects ‘…but also ugly things, Jews love ugliness. We learned that in school’. As we see him catch a glimpse of his scarred face in a mirror, acknowledging his own ugliness, he says ‘Ugly things, you love them, yes?’ and you can just imagine his logic — a) if I am ugly and b) Jews love ugly things, maybe c) Elsa could love me back. This is followed by a scene where he talks to Hitler in his bedroom and right before it ends, he asks ‘Adolf, do you think I’m ugly?’ Hitler says yes and after he leaves by jumping out the window, Jojo looks at his face again in the mirror. Of course this all leads up to us seeing the butterflies in Jojo’s stomach as he sits outside the door while Elsa take a bath, which confirms how he feels about her and then ultimately him telling her that he loves her.

Love this movie and your reaction to it. As others have said the movie does an amazing job of balancing comedy and tragedy, light and dark. There are some things in the movie that aren’t obvious, I certainly didn’t catch them the first time I saw it. When Captain K shows up at Jojo’s house after the gestapo, the bicycle he carries in is Jojo’s mother’s, so it seems that he already knew what had happened to Jojo;s mother and showed up to protect Jojo. In the scene where you see Captain K and Finkel in their redesigned uniforms there is a pink triangle on Captain K’s helmet, and Finkel’s cape is covered in pink triangles, so, yes, they were lovers. And I have been told that Hitler was a vegetarian and practiced a healthy lifestyle, so there a clues throughout the movie that Jojo really did not know much about the actual man. Hitler would not have been a smoker and would not have eaten meat, unicorn or otherwise.
