Dirty Harry (1971) Full Length Reaction

You've gotta ask yourself a question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?

This one really surprised me! It was much more than just a cop and bad guy movie, it really made me think about the line that cops have to walk, vigilantism, the justice system and justice in general. Should we watch more Dirty Harry movies?

Great and very interesting reaction Jen! Clint Eastwood is such a cool guy 😎 so hope you watch more of his films. And you really made me notice the soundtrack this viewing. Its absolutely banging!! You're the best 👍

Dirty Harry will return in Magnum Force.

Jason Scade

Not sure if any mentioned this yet, but the story featured in this movie is the same story that is covered in the movie 'Zodiac'

JPDotCom23

Dirty Harry is at it again in 'Magnum Force'

JPDotCom23

Lots of good 'uns in that list. The Warriors (1979) also.

Jason Scade

Fantastic reaction to a true classic - stylish and supercool, so tense and exciting (and grim). Some awesome shots in the film. Soundtrack is masterful. Dirty Harry changed the cop genre blueprints. Beautiful sweater. 💜 Yes to more Dirty Harry, please. Five in total, though none are as strong as the first but they're worth seeing once at least, if you like the character. A minor Eastwood hit I'm very fond of is 'Firefox' (1982), it's based on a techno spy thriller novel about a highly advanced fighter jet and is a close as Clint comes to 007. Although there is also another film of his, 'The Eiger Sanction' (1975), which is somewhat spy orientated but not as much as Firefox. Eastwood that I'd highly recommend are; Where Eagles Dare (1968) The 'Inglourious Basterds' of the 60s. A Perfect World (1993) Manhunt / road movie. Thunderbolt & Lightfoot (1974) Crime-comedy / heist. In The Line of Fire (1993) Assassin thriller. The Gauntlet (1977) Cop action / thriller. Bronco Billy (1980) Modern-day Western comedy/drama. The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) Western revenge. The Bridges of Madison County (1995) Romantic drama, based on best selling novel. The Mule (2018) Crime drama.

It should be noted that Scorpio is one of the best Star Trek characters. You will get to him in a few years when you finally get to Deep Space Nine.

That killer was nuttier than a fruit cake 😵‍💫 what a loon , harry not giving an F served him well 🙂 awesome reaction as always Jen and that piano 🙌

Ian

Yesssssssssssssss watch them all pleaseeeeeeeeeee

Directed by Don Siegel, one of the great underrated filmmakers, who worked with Clint often. They famously disagreed on Harry's character for this - Clint saw him as a flawed hero, Siegel as a killer who only qualifies as a comparative hero because Scorpio is such a psycho. I think the ambiguity works really well - the movie was hugely controversial when it came out, but it genuinely makes you think. Not many cop movies do that.

Jon Anderson

To me, the ending is Harry confronting the paradox of acceptable laws that let a racist, sexist, child-killing pedophile psychopath have more rights than a 10-year-old black child, a young teenage girl, and other random innocent people leads to a conclusion that knowingly letting him back out to kill again by laws/over life seemed senseless, and logically unacceptable being a Homicide Detective. Under the law, in the end, Harry didn't save a bus full of kids and the driver; he murdered a suspect.

Please please please. Tell us that you are now extremely interested in watching the full 5 in the series. I promise you, it is worth it!

I visited SF about ten years ago... I heard it's been hit hard ever since COVID. It's a shame. When I went, I went up Mount Davidson to the cross where the scene was filmed in this movie. Went up the short way, which made it a difficult hike (for me, at least). I made sure to give "Escape from Alcatraz" an upvote. It's definitely a another good collaboration between Siegel and Eastwood.

Good movie. Thanks for reacting to this. I like the ending scene -- a fitting conclusion to the gray/dissonance in the movie. By the way, interesting seeing SF as filmed in 1970-71. SF always stands out to me in films. I visited SF last year. Awesome city. I am not a big fan of the subsequent movies Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, and The Dead Pool. If I had to choose one, I would go with Magnum Force (1973) or The Enforcer (1976). I am a big fan of Eastwood westerns: THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (1976) [RT=91%] Pale Rider (1985) [RT = 93%] High Plains Drifter (1973) [RT = 94%] Hang 'Em High (1968) [RT = 92%]. *For a movie with Clint Eastwood as a prisoner (instead of a cop), ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ (1979) [RT = 97%] is one of my favorite Eastwood movies. As you may know, Alcatraz Island is 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco. I upvoted the movie on your Patron Movie Requests -- Escape from Alcatraz currently has 17 requests.

Yes, I absolutely would love for you to continue (and finish) the Dirty Harry series.

Ron

Shall be watching after work and looking forward to it as always I already know you're going to love it so should be a cracker 🍿🔥

Ian

To start of I knew the iconic line “you feel lucky punk?” came from this movie. I’ll watch the rest of the series with your reactions Jen, I can imagine you with a Smith & Wesson replica gun and imitate Harry in one of those series lol.

Great reaction, Jen! Yeah, around that time frame there was a big question of how far the justice system would fail the majority of society by an overboard coddling of the criminals’ rights. “Dirty Harry” was a response to those feelings as well as the “Death Wish” franchise (beginning in 1974) starring Charles Bronson. As far as the rest of the “Dirty Harry” franchise, the next two, “Magnum Force” (1973) and “The Enforcer” (1976) are the best of the lot. These two pretty much stick to the formula set out in the original movie. “Sudden Impact” (1983) veers markedly away from the formula that made the first three so successful. In my opinion, it’s because “Sudden Impact” was more of a vehicle for Eastwood’s significant other at the time, Sondra Locke. “The Dead Pool” (1988) is a return closer to the original formula. Not sure if anyone else notices, but in “Dirty Harry”, prior to the bank robbery when Harry is going to the Burger Den to get a hot dog, a movie theater marquee can be seen around the corner. The movie on the marquee is “Play Misty For Me” (also released in 1971) – Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut, starring himself.

The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (1974) is solid. So many great 70s film! I'm longing for The French Connection (1971), Marathon Man (1976), The Boys From Brazil (1978) to name just three. Freebie and the Bean (1974) is a good laugh. It's a scuzzy 70s Lethal Weapon of sorts. It influenced Lethal Weapon, 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop. Synopsis; The film follows two offbeat police detectives who wreak havoc in San Francisco attempting to bring down an organized crime boss. The volatile, gratuity-seeking Freebie is trying to get promoted to the vice squad to garner perks for his retirement while the neurotic and fastidious Bean has ambitions to make lieutenant.

All the series is worth a watch. If you like the '70s vibe and wanna do another gritty city crime genre entry, check out The Taking Of Pelham 123 (NOT the remake). It also has what is probably my favorite '70s jazzy crime score, by David Shire. I'm 100% sure you'd really love that score. And yes, Lalo Schifrin is an amazing composer (still alive at 91 years old). He's probably most notable as the composer of the Mission: Impossible theme (and tons of excellent music for that series).

Guy Gordon

Let's watch the whole series! That soundtrack and the way they used it and didn't use it,kept the tension at an even strain👍👍..this movie was released while the Zodiac killer was on the loose in the bay area!

Celeste McAllister

Awesome! That's Thurs eve's viewing sorted with Jen. "She Looks Too Damn Good." Must remember to get in my Magnums (choc ice lolly). 👍 I'm feeling licky, punk!

Jason Scade

At least Magnum Force, The Enforcer and Sudden Impact!! 🤓

Carlos Perez

Can’t wait until I get home tonight for this! Lalo Schifrin is an Argentinian composer of jazz music as well as soundtracks. He did a great theme for a 70's detective show called Mannix. He did a few albums for a label called CTI in the 1970's along with a ton of other famous jazz artists. The label is perfect for that 1970's fusion/funk jazz that was popular during that time. Andy Robinson the actor that played Scorpio had trouble finding work after this because he was typecast as a villain. He did some other horror movies like Hellraiser and even became a regular on Star Trek Deep Space 9.
