🖖Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) Full Length Reaction

Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with.

This one was maybe my least fav of the bunch so far BUT I always enjoy spending time with our crew! Music was great, rocket boots + camping made me laugh + now I know what a movie directed by William Shatner looks like. On to #6!! 🖖

🖖Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) Full Length Reaction

Comments

My least favorite of the TOS movies, yet also containing my favorite moment from all of them, "Excuse me... what does God need with a starship?"

Thomas Yanez

A few things you might have missed not having seen all of the TOS episodes. First, when Kirk mentioned that he lost a brother, he actually did, in the episode "Operation--Annihilate!" (Last episode of season 1). As for Spock playing an instrument, he did so in the TV show (I forget how many times). The most notable one was in the 3rd season episode "The Way To Eden" when he joined in a jam session with a bunch of space hippies (No, I'm not kidding about that. There were space hippies). Also, when they were filming this movie, they did so on sets next to The Next Generation TV show. Will Wheaton who, as a teenager, played a character on TNG, actually had a great story regarding when he first met William Shatner. Look up "William F*cking Shatner" on YouTube (with the asterisk). He tells the story with very funny instrumentation in the background.

The Chief of Staff that was talking to Kirk, that is producer Harve Bennett

I support your cause. I only wish after Jen watched it that she could burn it and thus no one else could happen upon it. But alas these things are digital and can't be destroyed. All of our children shall be subjugated to this horror simply because one Canadian woman can't set fire to it.

Technically Star Trek: Judgment Rites for the PC back in the DOS days is the last time the original crew was together since it was all voiced over by the original actors. But movie wise yes VI is the final time the crew is all together. :(

RJ MacReady

I saw this in theatres at the time, this will, now, be the last and only time I will ever watch this movie

JPDotCom23

Hey what does Rocky and Startrek have in common? The first two are the originals both solid movies. 3,4 and 6 are great but 5 in both cases is the worst!

Brett Whittaker

As you might have guessed the standout quote from this movie is "Excuse me, what does God need with a starship?" I second an earlier comment that before moving on to TNG you should finish the two remaining JJ Abrams era movies as they are TOS based. You usually do anyway but for the next movie watch a few moments of the end credits as they do something really cool that years later the final Avengers movie does also.

Andrew Roach

Did not notice the first time I saw this that the theme at the beginning of the movie is not the theme from the original show, but from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Kevin Sommerfield

that was better than I remembered, probably with a good reactor watching along, it reminded more like the TV series, where Kirk ran into many Gods

zynjams

I think really the only standout thing here is Spock and McCoy's secret pain. Well, that and the "what does God need with a starship" exchange.

Joe Concepts

I always figured that with the huge success of Star Trek IV, a very funny movie, they leaned extra hard on the comedy for the next one. The problem is a lot of the comedy is, sorry, a lot dumber.

Joe Concepts

The only good things about this movie are the things stolen from previous movies. SFX shots. The entire soundtrack (from ST: The Motion Picture, but it was used weekly on TNG when this movie came out). The best thing I can say about Shatner as director is that he didn't invoke his Favored Nations clause and try to direct the next one. Star Trek VI is quite wonderful.

I wish one could upload images here. I'll just quote myself. "I am truly surprised how fast a movie series can deteriorate with only one film. In contrast to the last movie, our Enterprise crew have been transformed into intergalactic punsters in a film ringing with false sentiment and strained humor." Anyway, that was me in 1989.

Anonymous Groucho

I was so angry about this movie that I wrote a pages long typewriter expressed outrage as a 19-year old and took the trouble to mail it to Starlog Magazine (that used to be a thing). It was published in its entirety.

Anonymous Groucho

second this!

MattN

The best one is next! For me, VI is the best of the original crew movies - it's the most well rounded and is such a satisfying send off for the beloved OG crew.

Anthony Peterson

The last of us series for spooky October? 👻 yeh? Yeeeh?

Chris

ST6 is The Undiscovered Country. Generations is #7.

Tom Evans

ST6 is the last traditional original crew Trek film. ST7 "Generations" is the first of the Next Generation crew films, but there are crossover elements with some members of the original series.

John

And … behind Spock and the group: the shadow of the rig used to hold them up. Not hard to see. (Overhead lighting with fill from underneath might have fixed that).

David Olden

Easy answer: the Uber drivers’ quotes were ridiculous! 🤑

David Olden

"The Undiscovered Country" is the final movie with the original cast. "Generations" is a TNG movie, but it came after the TNG series so hold off watching #7 until you've made it through the 7 seasons of the series. I am not much of a fan of "The Final Frontier." It is my least favorite of the TOS movies, but it has its moments. A glaring production error is the turboshaft scene with Spock's boots. The Enterprise-A (and refit for that matter) is only 23 decks tall, not 78 as shown in the movie.

Bammer

Doohan also did many of the alien/computer voices in the original series.

John Bresnahan

Because of the title of this one, I was sure this was the last Star Trek movie when it came out. I was so glad when a couple years later there was another movie, and one of the best of the franchise as well.

I saw this in the theater, and I was rather disappointed when I left. This watch along is only the third time I have ever watched this one. I just feel like for all the good it has, there is more that is poorly written and/or implemented. I have no problem with the story, but I fell like it could have been carried out in a far more interesting way.

Vwlss Nvwls

I rather enjoy this movie, tbh

Chrissonator

The only thing that really hurt this movie, imo, was the visual effects budget. Bill got shafted hard on this movie after he was told by someone that they knew someone who could do the effects. Some of the shots are nothing more than stop motion animation using the filming models. lol

Chrissonator

Another fun reaction! I've watched this a few times over the years and it does have the craziest dialog. The Undiscovered Country is the final entry in the TOS Era but it's a grand one!

Wade Wallenstein

Trek 7 with TNG crew has members of the original, there you will see them for the last time.

Descepticon

“Is Scotty really Scottish? “ I assume you mean the actor. James Doohan is actually, like yourself, Canadian. Prior to his career as an actor, he served in WWII as a Royal Canadian Artillery officer in support of 1st Army Group Royal Canadian Artillery.

Ortizmo

Fab Starfleet badge! Very excited for Trek 6. 💜 Trek 7 is TNG crew. I'm sure you'll love Data.

Jason Scade

I feel the same way about Final Frontier. It's my least favourite of the TOS movies but it's still got some really memorable moments and character bits. Undiscovered Country is the last time you'll see the original cast all together, but most of them turn up again at some point, to a greater or lesser degree. Even in some of the more modern stuff.

Chris Devlin

The concept of this one is certainly very true to the TOS spirit - and it has some really nice, comfy character moments. Unfortunately, some questionable decisions and horrid production problems contributed to an overall lackluster entry in the series. I still like it for the aforementioned reasons :)

Michael Bauer

I still want to know, what does God need with a starship?

daniel j brooks

Literally just got finished watching your reaction of THE VOYAGE HOME (my favorite ST movie) and was so happy you enjoyed it. Somebody posted the entire audiobook of “William Shatner’s Star Trek Movie Memories” on YouTube and it’s a great listen if you wanna hear some cool behind-the-scenes stories from the making of these movies. Naturally, having directed THE FINAL FRONTIER, Shatner digs deep into that one and while I don’t think there was ever a way of it being a great movie, situations abounded that kept it from being a good movie. Also, look up on YouTube the deleted footage of the Rock Man monster that got cut out of the movie. People like to say it was the inspiration for the rock monster in GALAXY QUEST. Can’t wait to see you finish off the TOS series of films with THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (WRATH OF KHAN director Nick Meyer back behind the camera).

Zack Parks

Yeah lol. This had some very good character moments but unfortunately not much else. To be fair it wasn't ALL Shatner's fault the studio slashed the budget by half during filming so things had to be rewritten. Also ILM was not available to do the special effects and it showed. Still, the question is not answered what does god need with a starship? But yeah Star Trek 6 is a much better movie and arguably on par with 2 and 4.

RJ MacReady

This is what happens when William Shatner directs a movie. Thankfully the next movie is a banger.

PapaXan

I have no doubt you will enjoy this movie like no other! 😊 You're awesome 😎
