Given that Abagnale was nowhere near as attractive as Dicaprio it's pretty easy to believe he was a fantastic liar. it's just that the biggest con he ever pulled was convincing people he did most of this stuff; to sell books!! Sure he went to prison for check fraud, impersonation. But pretending to be a Doctor? Passing the bar? Everything he says is just designed to make himself a legend. A classic confidence trickster.
