Sherlock Holmes (2009) Full Length Reaction

The game's afoot.
I've finally seen Sherlock and Watson! This one was very mysterious and I really thought we were looking at a dark magic situation but Sherlock swooped in with his logic and solved it! I would definitely watch the sequel, does anyone want to see it?

You should actually watch the BBC series 'Sherlock' starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, it's fantastic.

I grew up reading the books and was very sceptical when I saw the first trailer for this, but was legit stunned when I actually watched it. RDJ's interpretation of Holmes is quite out there, but it really works. He's not as kooky in the literature but he's still a bit of a weirdo, and if anything, RDJ's version is actually more likeable! The supernatural element was also a bit of a surprise but it was a great callback to The Young Sherlock Holmes movie from the (I think) early 90s, which also had a similar, and honestly brilliant, vibe. If you loved this, you really should watch Game of Shadows - it's not as good as this in my opinion overall, but the battle of wits between Holmes and Moriarty is so perfectly pitched that it doesn't really matter. Jared Harris was subliminal casting, and the scenes with him and RDJ more than make up for the dips in the filler. Guy Ritchie definitely did -the original supervillain- justice.

The second one is legitimately brilliant. Its works on pure charisma and a surprisingly great villain plot

Fabulous reaction, Jen! 🔎💜 I thought you'd love Victorian Riggs & Murtaugh. I think the sequel is even better and the actor playing the main villain is outstanding, Lecter-esque.

Sure, watch the sequel, it's pretty good. But you'd really do well to watch the BBC Sherlock version with Benedict Cumberbatch. RDJ's Sherlock is quite unlike the original Doyle Sherlock, but the Cumberbatch Sherlock is more different still. Except for all the drug use. And Martin Freeman slays as Watson (Watson has backstory? Wha?!).

Great reaction, Jen.
Traditionally, the canon of Sherlock Holmes consists of the 56 short stories and four novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In this context, the term "canon" is an attempt to distinguish between Doyle's original works and subsequent works by other authors using the same characters.
Novels
The four novels of the canon:
A Study in Scarlet (1887)
The Sign of the Four (1890)
The Hound of the Baskervilles (Serialised in Strand Magazine between 1901–1902)
The Valley of Fear (Serialised in Strand Magazine between 1914–1915)
A great movie version of The Hound of the Baskervilles was made in 1959 starring Peter Cushing.
Short stories
The 56 short stories are collected in five books:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892)
The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1894)
The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1905)
His Last Bow (1917)
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (1927)

Fantastic all on the Music as MVP. Music is the emotional palette that an artist like Hans Zimmer colors the film with., Miss Jen always understand the importance of the score to a film. Thank you, Miss Jen. You'll enjoy the next film in this series.

If you want to watch all of the Sherlock Holmes movies, Jen, you'll need to start more than 100 years before this Robert Downey Jr. came out. Silent movies featuring Sherlock Holmes go all the way back to 1900.

My introduction to Holmes was through an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. If you want more (detective than action hero), I would suggest Sherlock (2010) from the BBC. The series is very short (number not duration) and might be a good subject for reactions as the fan base is rabid and large, I think. I also recommend a personal favorite: House (2010). Holmes ('homes') becomes House, Dr. Watson becomes Dr. Wilson, and medical mysteries are tackled. A very long series that I wouldn't hope to see reacts to (but if I were going to pick a single episode for you to react to, it would be s01e21 "Three Stories". Dr. Mike of YouTube fame did that episode /ramble) but you might enjoy the series on your own time.

I don't think Jen gets enough credit for her music knowledge, Great react Jen! This was a lot of fun! It hurts my heart a bit though that you've never seen *any* Sherlock before!
