The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) Full Length Reaction

This must be Thursday... I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

πŸ† Poll Winner!

Wooo boyyyy, I think I used the word 'wild' like 500 times in the outro and that is the perfect word to describe this movie! πŸ˜† This movie seems quite divisive, either love it or hate it but I was dazzled by the crazy story and it just made me want to read the book!

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) Full Length Reaction

That was lots of fun, I'd not seen since '05. πŸ˜…πŸ’› The UK tv series is quaintly dated and low budgeted but is still enjoyable. The theme tune is still awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cMRNup4BWg

I haven't seen this film for about ten years, but I always liked it for it's quirky story and humor. Definitely a hidden gem in my opinion.

I've never understood why people dislike the film. Some book readers see it as an over simplification. Maybe it's too optimistic and not weird enough?! The story was always sprawling on the radio and tv, to the point where it never really feels like there's any conclusion. To me that always felt improvised rather than purposeful as storytelling so I like that the film tells a cohesive narrative. But in this watch I do find the romance underdeveloped. They met once at a party... But the score and visuals are amazing and the actors are fantastic. Im surprised its not considered a classic

The hitchhiler books are great and the radio play..the Dirk Gently series is also excellent..they are hilarious but difficult to adapt because the comedy mostly comes from the narrator.

Alberto Blanco

Interesting perspectives. My first experience with the story was through the BBC television series, which came after the books, which came after the radio play. Someone above mentioned that all of the iterations vary by degrees. The thing that holds all the versions together is the voice of Douglas Adams, the brilliant creator of the whole thing. I've read everything he wrote over the years. Unfortunately he passed away too young early in 2001. The best stuff in the movie was lifted directly from Adams own writing, and where it falls is where the co-writers try to imitate his voice. So do read the books (the 5th one, Mostly Harmless, is not as good as the others, and there was one, maybe two other sequels written by others -- the less said the better). Also look at his other books: "Last Chance to See" is a non-fiction book about visiting the habitats of endangered animals. "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" is the first of a pair of novels about, well, a Private Eye who is not very honest but always is right, and contains maybe the greatest opening sentence in literary history: "High upon a rocky promontory sat an electric monk on a bored horse."

Any plans to jump back into the DCEU films?

David Crabtree

Jen, you really know where your towel is.

Hypnobob

The books are quite good. I'll also add that the audiobooks are quite good as well. They're read by Stephen Fry and Martin Freeman, who also appear in the movie, obviously.

Radio drama is better than the movie. Books are great too.

Farstar

Listen to the Radio Series. It is the Original Version and I think is better than the novel

the core trilogy of novels: 1. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 2. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe 3. Life, the Universe and Everything the extended "trilogy" includes: 4. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish 5. Mostly Harmless But if you can track down the 1980's BBC mini-series, that's definitely worth watching (and reacting to!) as it uses the same script and cast as the original radio show that predates the novels. Part of the joy (or frustration) of this movie is comparing the elements that are in common with the novel and radio versions, and what's new.

Matthew Brench

Yeah, and it changed with each different iteration, so naturally the movie doesn't strictly follow the book. I think you kinda want that in a comedy. If you know all the jokes beforehand, won't be as much fun.

Joe Blankenship

I think that was where I fell off at the start of it.

Reed James

Yes, that is me. That's why I can watch the bug move (Starship Troopers) because I read the book after.

Reed James

Fourth. And I felt like it took a minute to get into the groove of that particular novel, unlike the first three.

Myoclonic Jerk

Go back to the beginning and do the awesome radio series (which came before the book version - though the books diverge from the radio series and is worth giving a shot after doing the radio series).

Guy Gordon

I’d love to see a crossover with the universe of this movie and Fifth Element

The music that you liked at about 15 minutes in was the original theme music for the radio show. Us old school fans really loved that inclusion! The actual music is called journey of the sorcerer, by The Eagles of all bands.

Matthew Brench

It's base off a Radio Drama, I believe, that Adams turned into a book series. I believe that So Long and Thanks for all the Fish is the title of the third book.

Reed James

If you think this story was wild. Checkout the history of the story. How Adams wrote it and in what conditions. It is as strange and unbelievable as the story itself.

Arjan

I love how you still do the separate Patreon "Hello" with the same enthusiasm every time 🀘 This movie was my introduction to the Hitchhiker Universe, so I loved it. As an avid "if I read the book first your movie sucks" person myself, though...I can understand πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
