Soon. I'm so excited.

Zachary Carter

Late getting to this one, but after watching Arena, please folks check out this guy's song about the fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axXmLFZZmds

David

No, I would conjecture that Trelayne was the first 'Q'-type being met.

MertzRocks

"I don't think this is a friendly cube." Wait til you see the NEXT one. About a hundred years later. Heheheheh.

Ortizmo

A lot of pitter patter in the background....I think Boston needs a pedicure or Jen may have to knit some booties for Boston 🥾😁

Randy Aiken

I reacted to them out of order if that's what you mean? I got the episode numbers from this list: https://www.justwatch.com/ca/tv-show/star-trek/season-1

Jen M

Are there different ways the episodes of season 1 are numbered? I'm a little confused when comparing different folks' labels of each episode!

Fr. Brench

I forgot to mention, if you look carefully at Spock on the planet using his tricorder, the tv screen on it is actually facing away from him. He held it backwards for much of the first season, which was what was being spoofed by Alan Rickman holding his upside down in Galaxy Quest.

Chris Biebel

After watching Arena again, would anyone agree with me that the Metrones could be the first incarnation of the “Q” ?? (Sorry Jen you’ll have to wait to understand what I’m on about)

RebRox65

Well Jen I did vote for you to watch arena first time around, I’m so glad you’ve now seen it as, it now frees you to watch the new show STRANGE NEW WORLDS which is a prequel show with Captain Pike at the helm of the Enterprise and their have been a few Gorn episodes, but the Gorn in the new show look a lot more terrifying.

RebRox65

I had those Mego brand action figures and accessories, including the carrying case that opened up into a transporter room.

Nice reaction, Jen! "Arena" is based on a short story of the same name by Frederic Brown (1944), which, if anything, is even weirder than the episode. I can attest that, back in 1967, both Balok's "dummy" and the Gorn were friggin' terrifying. As a child, I happened to wander into the living room while Balok's image was booming threats at the crew, and it really freaked me out.

Ken Schneyer

Enjoying your reacts to the original series. Looking forward to your reaction to the movies. I hope you venture into "Star Trek: The Next Generation" prior to the "Next Generation" movies.

Dustin Denner

I remember back in the 70s they came out with Star Trek dolls (Think GI Joe or Barbie sized). One of the few non-Starfleet dolls that they had was of the Gorn. The thing about Star Trek, particularly the Original Series, is that there are so many kinds of episodes, which is why so many people said 10 was too few to get a good feel for it. You need a larger sample size to get both the key ones for pop culture and the various styles of the show. For instance, Conscience of the King is very psychological/philosophical with some Shakespearean themes thrown in.

Chris Biebel

A fun fact for each episode: In The Corbomite Maneuver, the actor playing the child-like alien Balok is Clint Howard, the younger brother of actor/director Ron Howard. He always gives him a part in the movies he directs... for example, in Backdraft, he plays the Medical Examiner. The cannon constructed in Arena was actually tested by the Mythbusters crew, to see if they could duplicate it. Turns out it was less a working cannon and more a bomb. In fact, the crew said at the end that Kirk would have had better luck if he gave it to the Gorn and let *him* use it. :)

Ed Bartlett

Fun fact: The Corbomite Maneuver was the first Star Trek episode to be made after the pilot. However, it aired as the 10th episode because it took so long to make the special effects. You could really tell IMO that the personalities of the crew were not yet established, including Spock. Uhura wasn't in her red outfit yet either.

SuicuneSol

You wondered why this didn't make the first poll? Probably because you were asking for information about the crew and their backgrounds and their interactions. This episode is more just a popular, iconic episode. Imagery that people remember, and has been referenced very much in popular culture. It even inspired one of my favorite reference jokes in "Galaxy Quest": "Construct a weapon... look around you... can you form some sort of rudimentary lathe?" It's been half a dang century since I first saw the episode, and I still sometimes will hum the combat music when seeing not-serious confrontation, like two dogs struggling over a chew toy.

Thomas Yanez

I'll take what I can get. Keep up the good work!

Thomas Yanez

Wish my internet was faster, it took hoursssss to upload 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Jen M

Excellent, thank you! Been flicking through TikTok waiting for this to drop. I had faith!
