Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) Full Length Reaction

I’m Brian, and so’s my wife!

We're back with the Monty Python men and this time it's a single narrative story -- apart from that insane alien part lol!! So absurd and silly, I loved it! Anyone interested in the 3rd movie?

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) Full Length Reaction

As someone pointed out above, George Harrison invested 4 million and founded Handmade Films to get this movie made. Silly as it sounds big studios thought it was too controversial a topic to invest in. It did well upon opening, but theaters in the US and in Europe were picketed, and a few theater chains wouldn't show it. It was even banned in some places by local councils, with a few of those bans still in place to this day (though not many are enforced). Sue Jones-Davies plays Judith, it was her first film role. She is a Welsh actress and singer who went into politics later on. She was Mayor for a few years in the Welsh town of Aberystwyth. One of her first priorities upon assuming office was to reverse the city's ban on the film.

At this point in his career George wasn't "f-u" wealthy, he had to mortgage his home to invest in the film. His wife and financial adviser were aghast, and someone asked "Why would you pay $4 million to invest in this movie?" and George answered "I wanted to see it." Eric Idle called it the most expensive movie ticket ever purchased.

If you loved the animations in the opening, you will go nuts for the ones in the show. They make all the ones from the movies seem tame.

The really funny part about that is that the guys went up to George Harrison and asked him if he knew anyone who wanted to finance the film, he replied with "Yes, me." They then said, "No really, do you know anyone who might want to do it?" Also, when Brian was coming down after addressing the crowd at his place, the guy who was introduced as the guy who was going to give them access to the mount was actually George Harrison.

"A Fish Called Wanda" is definitely a film you'd love. Python-style comedy, with Jamie Lee Curtis and a totally insane performance by Kevin Kline. A film with everything.

Clifton Owens

"The Meaning of Life" has a handful of songs in it, too. They also had a number of songs in the original TV show.

Thomas Yanez

Cleese also co-wrote the movie. It is a fun little movie.

Another movie with Monty Python cast is "A Fish Called Wanda" from 1988. It stars John Cleese & Michael Palin and also Jamie Lee Curtis & Kevin Kline. And... it's a heist comedy! So should be perfect for you :)

Fantastic reaction, Jen. Life of Brian is the third Monty Python movie. The first was And Now for Something Completely Different (1971) which was a collection of the best sketches from the first and second series of Monty Python's Flying Circus re-enacted and shot for film. I am a big Python fan and recommend you watch it.

If by third movie, you mean "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life", then if you have enjoyed the first two movies, then I'd say yes. It is also different from the other two, in that it is a set of completely unrelated vignettes, more like their original sketch comedy TV show, but with an overarching notion that the stories are attempting to reveal the meaning of life. The movie you just watched was directed by Terry Jones. The other two were directed by both Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. Both men, who were members of the original Monty Python TV show, went on to making many other movies, but Terry Gilliam's output includes a number of movies that I think you might enjoy watching. Many are heavily stylized and visually stunning, and often more than a little weird. If you're interested, throw up a poll of his movies and I'm sure you'll get a pretty strong response.

Thomas Yanez

Strange but true story about the budget, the movie was financed by George Harrison (yes, George Harrison of The Beatles) who set up a film company just because he wanted to see it made. I'm stoked to see you get into these guys. Eventually you will see Time Bandits and love it.

Jon Anderson

You should do a trial run of a few episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus and see how they do, i love the show i can recite sketches by memory 🤣

Carlos Perez

Yes "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" was written by Eric Idle for this movie

Richard Powers Hardt

Wait till Biggus Dickus hears of this!

"You are the messiah! I should know, I've followed a few!" Absolutely going to view this watch along with you now. I would enjoy more Monty Python from you like these: he Meaning of Life (1983) Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1980). Monty Python had a sketch comedy TV series before their movies. Live at the Hollywood Bowl was where they reperformed some favorite sketches from their show in front of a live audience.
