I said this like Khan after viewing the 2009 pos: "You are going to tell me... WHERE can I find JJ Abrams, and WHERE is the nearest airlock?" lol

Majel also appeared on an episode of the excellent short-lived Roddenberry series The Lieutenant, which also happened to guest star Leonard Nimoy and was directed by the great Marc Daniels. The star of the series was Gary Lockwood, from the second pilot of Star Trek.

That was great! Haβ¦ I donβt think Iβve ever seen you get so wrapped up in a mystery. I feel like a great Star Trek journey has begun! This was also my first time syncing for a full length. Very cool. Looking forward to moreβ¦ where no man has gone before!π

I'm surprised that no one explained this reason for this episode. When Star Trek was first commissioned, they made a pilot that the studio execs didn't like. However, they decided to give it another chance but with mostly a different cast. Spock was the only one who was kept. They wrote an entirely different story and shot a completely different episode. Outside of Firefly, I can't think of another time that a show shot another pilot (although thankfully the kept the original cast in Firefly).
"Number One" was actually Roddenberry's girlfriend at the time and she later returned as another character (Nurse Chapel) as well as being the voice of the computer. She literally appeared in some form or another (live or with her voice as the computer) in every iteration of Star Trek during her lifetime. They decided to save some money by reusing the original pilot in clip form to basically get 2 cheaper episodes in the first season. Supposedly the execs didn't like either Spock or Number One and Roddenberry joked that he kept the Vulcan and married the woman because he didn't think Leonard would have wanted it the other way around.
BTW, the "Beam me up, Scotty" is one of those cases of a quote that isn't actually from a show or movie, but people think it is. They'd instead say "Beam me up" or "Two to beam up." Also, when going from the ship to the planet, you're beaming down. When going from the planet to the ship, you're beaming up.

I am sooooo happy that you are watching Star Trek. I was a kid when this series first aired, and I adored it. It's not too much to say that it framed a lot of my future life. (I'm a science-fiction & fantasy writer nowadays.) The later series (all of them) are also well worth seeing. This episode was an excuse to broadcast the original pilot, which had a different cast (except for Spock). Jeffrey Hunter, who played Pike, also played Jesus in the film, "King of Kings." (1961), which was also the first screen version of the life of Christ I ever saw. Hunter died tragically young.

The most recent Blu-ray box set (ASIN: B01CJW334Q) offers the option to witch with original effects and mono audio or the updated effects and upmixed audio. Unlike Star Wars, I'm only aware of the one recent pass on updating the visual effects.

They just don't make'em like this anymore. Today, they tend to put all their effort into effects at the expense of great storytelling. It's a sad commentary on how far Hollywood has fallen.

The saying "I Grok Spock" was pretty popular as a mixture of the language of Robert A Heinlein's "Stranger In A Strange Land" and the character Spock from Roddenberry's "Star Trek". It sounds like you Grok Spock!
Having a series that is truly episodic makes it easier to watch random episodes and not be completely lost. I am glad you're doing "Balance Of Terror" next though, as that one introduces a race (Romulans) that are referred to later on in the show and there would be minor spoilers if you watched one of those first.
These episodes are introducing people to a Universe where Starfleet is a professional organization and doesn't have people running though the halls and shouting at each other in every scene. It isn't QUITE a military organization in the strictest sense, but it's the next thing to it. This is Science Fiction, JJ Abrams movies is Action. Many people who loved the original had a hard time with the Abrams version for just that reason alone. Then take into account the fact that Abrams took 101 television episodes (combining The Original Series and The Animated Series), countless novels and comics, and 6 major motion pictures and threw them away saying "I'm not a Star Trek fan, I don't get it". Those levels of disrespect aren't going to warm you to a rabid fanbase

Oh, Also. Their Uniforms are color coded by function. Gold for Command, Navigation and some administration functions. Red for (Operations) Communication, Weapons, Security and Engineering. Blue for Science and Medical. The gold braid on their sleeves is their rank. In Part 1 Kirk in the ship's log refers to Spock as a Lieutenant Commander, however Spock is wearing the braids of a Commander on his uniform and actually is a Commander in rank. I never noticed that script error before.

Just because Spock's a badguy, doesn't mean Spock's a bad guy....

I'm really surprised that these two made the cut over Episodes like 'Balance of Terror,' 'The Ultimate Computer,' 'Let That be Your Last Battleground' and 'The Tholian Web.' Its not a complaint, I was just really surprised by the results.

I enjoyed this watch-along. Glad you enjoyed it. Some more great episodes you have lined up with even greater movies of the original cast and crew :)
I was biting my limit resisting answering your questions due to potential to spoil the experience for future episodes and movies.

Surprised myself how much fun this was watching with you. Such a personal franchise for me only ever watched on my own all these decades.
Be careful Jen these shows are highly addictive before you know it you'll be making a dedicated StarTrek channel. π
Can't wait for the next one

Welcome to the final frontier, Jen. It is worth noting that some of the effects in the episodes you are watching were updated several times over the last 20 or so years. Its hard to come by episodes with the original effects (much like what happened with the original Star Wars trilogy).
I'm hoping after you view the TOS episodes and movies that you proceed to The Next Generation era.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet, but these 2 episodes were a way for them to show the original pilot of the show, which, as you can see, was quite different than what we finally got.

The phrase 'Beam me up, Scotty' is never actually spoken in the series. Like 'Play it again, Sam' (Casablanca) and 'Luke, I am your father', (The Empire Strikes Back), it's a famous quote from a show that is never actually spoken in the show it's supposed to be from.
And yes, the special effects were revised when the show was remastered. However, as someone who watched the show when it came out in the 60's, I can say it was revolutionary. Granted, I was just a little kid at the time. The show also introduced a lot of concepts (like cell phones, thumb drives and voice recognition software) that were wildly speculative at the time, but have since become reality....

Well, that was fun! It's been so long since I've seen those episodes, but once you've seen a dancing green Vina, you don't forget! Lol! (I much prefer the non-green version!) Looking forward to more of your Star Trek: The Original Series reactions, Jen. They're a bit campy, but definitely entertaining.

I'm not precisely sure which version of the episodes you are watching, but I'm only assuming that it's the revised versions with 'some' improved special effects with modern technology. So unless you've been given access to the original versions, it would be hard to fully evaluate accurately what the reception would have been to them at the time this came out. They would still have been ground breaking of course, that goes without question. Shows like Trek did pioneer both visuals and story ideas. The stories would be the thing to pay closer attention to, as not all of what you are seeing will reflect what a 60's audience would have.
