For Your Eyes Only (1981) Full Length Reaction

All right, keep your hair on!

OMGGG THE OPENING and the return of NUMBER 1!!!!!!!!!!!! I was beyond pumped to see him lol!! James is back on earth for this one and skiing like an Olympic hopeful, diving with the sharks, and scaling the cliffs to a secret hideout. All in very cool 80's style! Octopussy is next, but after that does anyone want to see Never Say Never Again?

For Your Eyes Only (1981) Full Length Reaction

Comments

This movie, where to begin?!? I've been looking fwd to your reaction to this for a looong time. This is one of my fondest memories of ANY Bond. Back in the days, we waited years for theatrical movies to make it home and this was a 'biggun. Watching this "recent" Bond with my dad was a BFD. The networks aired previous Bond movies pretty routinely, but they were from the 60' and 70's, this one was new. Linked (sorry if not allowed) you will see what out tease was on a Sunday night. I remade it (in HD) to preshow when I watch this movie. As far as the movie goes, good villains (bad guy in Indy jones 3 and empire strikes back), great locations and minimal camp. https://imgur.com/gallery/2Ee2TsR

It’s crazy, I’ve watched For Your Eyes Only many times but it wasn’t until your reaction that I realized a couple things. First is that visiting his wife’s grave really WAS a foreshadow of the ski & bobsled action scenes. Second, I realized the reason he seemed so close to Lisl was because she was a “countess” just like his wife, Teresa. And btw, speaking of Lisl, the actress who plays her was married at the time to future James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan and it was her involvement in this film that got the producer’s attention to him as a possible replacement for Roger Moore. And yes, this movie was very grounded after what Moonraker was, hence hardly any gadgets or armies facing off or bombastic megalomaniacal world domination plots and even Bond staying away from the (very) young lady.

I really enjoy your commentary about the musical scores in movies. I grew up collecting movie soundtracks but know very little about the instruments so it's great to have your perspective as someone whose played an instrument yourself. The instrument you described in FYEO as a noise maker, I believe the sound occurred after the East German athlete shoots at Bond for the first time in Cortina, is known as a Vibraslap. It was very commonly used in tv shows in the 70's and early 80's. Jerry Goldsmith uses it in Planet of the Apes (1968) during a chase sequence in the middle of the movie. It was often used to build suspense.
