Cloverfield (2008) Full Length Reaction

Comments

The Cloverfield Paradox is a slightly related Sci-Fi / horror movie you should see. I liked it better than this one because Sci-Fi.

Sample-Text

Great movie. Check out TJ Miller in Underwater. Great monster movie. Kristen Stewart really great in it.

Reed James

Fair enough Daryl, to each their own :)

Love the Cloverfield movies so much, and they seem to not get the love they really deserve imo! This one is a sorta-fun nostalgia trip for me, because I first saw it when it came out in 08, but not in theaters. I was deployed to Iraq at the time, and the way to see all the new movies was local Iraqis that were allowed to work on base had little DVD shops of all the new films. There were all terrible quality usually someone with a handheld cam sitting in an actual movie theater recording it that way, then burning that vid onto DVDs to sell us for just a couple of bucks. The really extra-crappy quality of the handi-cam theater version of this just added so much to the "found footage" feel for me; lol! Even the shots where you COULD see the monster, you really couldn't in that version. Also, my job in the military was as a camera guy doing military news stories and documentary type footage. That gave me a little extra appreciation for the "found footage" genre in general, and this one is an excellent one in my opinion!

SmokeAndACoffee

I hadn't seen this one before cuz I kinda avoid the found footage contrived formula, feeling that it has to be extremely well integrated into the plot for it to work well enough that I'm not taken out of the movie every few minutes and I don't come away feeling that it is more style than affective substance. This is a monster movie so applying logic to it can be a fool's errand. But if you make it part of the plot, then I can't help but feel that it's fair game for criticism. I did find it hard to go along with the character logic on this one. I may have missed something early on, so maybe I need an explanation and or correction on this one. So am I too assume that Hud went from reluctant videoographer initially to relentlessly recording every narratively important occurrence however statistically improbable that might be. Even at times when his natural instincts wouldn't be to capture enough stuff to move the action along. Why the characters weren't getting increasingly frustrated and irritated by having a camera in their face during the most traumatic and emotional moments. https://youtube.com/shorts/PJ3AEFN8G2E?feature=share 🤣 Was he a life long videoographer. Was this his job and I missed it. Or was it more that the chosen artistic direction dictated his actions more than his instincts would have. Ironically while this has a minimalist approach as part of its aesthetic, the same amount, if not more, production levels would be required to get the shots that were needed to make it look the way it does. Can't say that this one has made me a fan of the film style.

I learned about this movie after seeing a teaser trailer for it while watching I think it was "transformers" movie and I was instantly intrigued. Being a Godzilla fan growing up I thought this was going to be an "American" Godzilla monster movie but it was something totally different. From the shaky camera found footage morif like Blair Witch to the crazy viral marketing this movie did with fake websites and Facebook pages they went all out. I do think this movie could have started into something great but it's sequels though good (CF Lane) took way to long to make from this movie that it lost some of what made this movie awesome. Loved the reaction and I hope you manage to do Godzilla someday.

Prophet2272

"kinda change" = "woefully mishandled" It's too bad he didn't feel more strongly about the "connections". It wouldn't have taken much work to make the movies connect better - and more importantly - in a manner that was more obvious to the general movie-going public.

Thomas Yanez

I have a minor memory JJ confirmed it wasn't the monster falling, but a satellite/capsule tracking & studying the monster after it was discovered by the Japanese. But then again, the canon kinda change over the "connected movies"

So you looked away when it happened, and it's quite hard to see anyway, but if you have a look at the end whenever he says I love you, and the final explosion occurs, it cuts to the old video of their date and they're recording towards the ocean. If you look in the top corner you will see an object comes flying down and crashes in to the water. That's likely the arrival of the monster.

Mark McKeown

Oh wow, well, I'm in the minority! Thx for the info🤗

Jon Johns

It was on this poll but came 6th out of 10.

Super 8 is great homage to Speilberg and my childhood.

Jon Johns

Godzilla 2014 is not only my favorite monster movie, but it's in my own top ten movies of all time. If you have not seen it yet, Jen, I would be interested to see how it performs on a poll.

Jon Johns

Excited to watch! As another mentioned, Super8 is a great monster movie and has a lot of heart

Mark McKeown

Super8 is amazing

Mark McKeown

Thanks Jen! I saw my name listed at the end... 🙂

I was the same. It was like what the heck is going on?! As it unfolded, then wow...

another monster movie that I liked is THE HOST (2006) in Korean language. Remember when everyone was watching PARASITE, it is actually from the same director. I also remember liking TROLLHUNTER (2010) it used to be on Netflix. I was browsing around one day and thought, this looks interesting. It's a small film, in Norwegian language. I'm looking around the internet and some are asking the question "Is the footage from Troll Hunter real?" 😮😅🙂

Mannygogou

When I watched this I had no idea it was a monster movie. I knew it was something supernatural, but not sure how or what. So I was blown away by it.

Cloverfield was THE movie introducing me to Matt Reeves and I became an instant fan. He then directed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes & War for the Planet of the Apes and ofc, The Batman. Amazing director/producer. I really recommend watching 10 Cloverfield Lane as well, John Goodman acting in that one is on another level. It's not a monster film like Cloverfield, more of a psychological horror. Super 8 by JJ Abrams & Spielberg is also a monster that's really, really good. The soundtrack by Michael Giacchino still gets me.

Rippan

Probably the third best of the Bad Robot Monster movies after 10 Cloverfield Lane and Super 8.

Sonny Smith

I enjoy this style of movie, but I could never watch it in the theater. Just watching it on a screen as big as my t.v. starts giving me headaches with all the movement. Another movie I remember liking along this style is "Skyline".

Vwlss Nvwls

Ohh nice! I love Cloverfield

Chip MC

Woo! I'm glad you liked it 😊
