Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition (2016) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Still waiting on that Justice League Snyder cut reaction. Considering how much you loved the other movies, can't believe you could wait this long to watch it.

Richard Higgs

Just a friendly reminder that Aqua Man is happening AFTER Justice League story wise (as I figure you going for the Snyder Cut and the release dates can cause some confusion). So the order should be Wonder Woman (2017) > Justice League (Snyder Cut, 2021) > Aqua Man (2018). The Snyder cut is just a way better movie doing the character and fans... justice and leaves you asking for more, even tho its 4 hours long... :)

Rippan

Except... he's not. And it doesn't matter if he is, because the world has been full of regular humans (you know, with mothers of their own) doing horrible, horrible things to each other, at ever increasing levels of atrocity, for all of recorded history (and beyond, I'm sure.) Just because Superman had a foster mother here on Earth doesn't change any of Bruce's original premise that Superman is a god from space who could go psycho on the planet at any moment and we wouldn't be able to stop him, so it makes sense (to Bruce, after his years of obsessing on the topic) to take out Superman now while he's prepared to do it. Bruce suddenly changing his mind COMPLETELY on that for the "mother" reason makes no sense at all, and was just weak writing. "Gosh! He's got a mom! He'd never destroy us all and everything we've ever known. Best. Friends. Forever!"

Thomas Yanez

People really went nuts on the whole 'Martha' thing and missed the point completely. It wasn't that 'they have the same named mother and now everything is fine'. It's that until that point, Batman didn't think of him as human at all - "you're not brave... men are brave" / "you were never a god, you were never even a man" - until the moment he realised HE HAD A MOTHER. The fact they had the same name was just the icing on the cake, but that was the moment he realised Supes was just as human as he was.

Tim Christensen

Saw this in IMAX and loved it. Was always shocked at the backlash. The story for sure is dumb but there are only so many layers you can peel back on a superhero flick before they all become dumb. It was a gorgeous spectacle flick in that format for sure. Every individual frame and sound was fine-tuned to my theater and it was fantastic. I did feel bad for the kids that left crying dressed at Superman though but it's not my job to care about other people's kids. lul

Fantastic reaction Jen as always, Should absolutely check out Wonder Women next and the you have to make a big decision as to what direction to take you DC journey, continuing with the movies as released or watch the Zack Syder epic revamp Justice League. Either way will be fun.

Not a huge fan of this one but it is watchable, the only negative comment I'm going to make is: --Really? Hundreds of millions of dollars for production that spends nearly two hours setting us up for the big battle between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight and the only way you can think of to end the battle is to have Batman realize that Superman's mother and his own mother were both named Martha?" -- Aside from that, I was fascinated at the choice of making Batman an anti-immigrant activist, to the extreme of having him quoting Dick Cheney, word-for-word: "He has the power to wipe out the entire human race, and if we believe there's even a one percent chance that he is our enemy we have to take it as an absolute certainty... and we have to destroy him." -Bruce Wayne "If there’s a 1% chance that Pakistani scientists are helping al-Qaeda build or develop a nuclear weapon, we have to treat it as a certainty in terms of our response." - Dick Cheney, former VP of the US It becomes more ironic given that the previous Batman, Christian Bale, played VP Cheney in Adam McKay's 2018 docudrama Vice.

It was so much fun you not knowing who Wonder Woman was at first. I love how they introduced her in the film and her music ROCKS. Definitely check out Wonder Woman. While I didn't like Supe dying at the end, I did like how they did it. Everyone knows Superman isn't going to die, then he gets hit with a nuke and we're wondering if he's really hurt or killed.... NAH, he gets better. So then you think you're safe again, then WHAM - right through the heart. Literally. The only thing that really bothered me about the film is that here's this Kryptonite spear that can kill Kryptonians... so why not let Wonder Woman grab it and kill the monster? She's obviously able to hold her own against it.

John

I agree about Ben Affleck's take on Bruce Wayne / Batman. I never pictured Bruce Wayne as the flamboyant, playboy millionaire (a la' Tony Stark) of Christopher Nolan's trilogy. When I grew up (60s) he was an adult, philanthropist. Well-respected in the community. I mean, he took in an orphan and looked after him. Not some over-the-top carouser. That being said, I liked Jeremy Irons' portrayal of Alfred as well. Not some stodgy father-figure always trying to keep Bruce on the straight and narrow (Christopher Nolan, again). I can absolutely see Irons' Alfred saying, "Are you an idiot?" to Bruce.

Miles E Coburn

I didn't like it because of the plot contrivances. The people were burned using some type of accelerant (you can see them drenching the bodies with it), which would leave behind some kind of residue. Superman's heat vision doesn't work like that. Any half-assed examination of the scene would have shown that. So the whole "Superman caused all this damage / Superman's to blame" BS at the Congressional hearing is all trash. Jimmy Olsen as a CIA operative? Etc. Etc. Etc.

Miles E Coburn

Right? I mean, all the manufactured conflict was already overbearing, then they blow their wad way early with Doomsday, somebody who would’ve made for a greater Justice League villain down the road. And Zack Snyder really shows his “Michael Bay of comic book movies” side here; paper thin characters/plot but loads of special effects. 🤷‍♂️

Paulo_Maximus

The only nice thing I can say about this movie is I love in the beginning how when everyone is running away from the chaos, Bruce Wayne is running towards it. It’s a cool shot. That’s it. Theatrical or Director’s Cut, this movie is “manufactured conflict: the movie” and Jesse Eisenberg gives an atrocious performance as Lex Luthor. But I’ll hold back on my commentary because I don’t have anything remotely nice to say about this movie after this. 😅🤷‍♂️

Paulo_Maximus

Jenny Penny awesome reaction, you are Wonder Woman

Derek Big D Garcia

Supe should have come from behind and gone for the head.

Andrew Skow

I agree with you. The ethical and moral questions of value of life vs justice is absolutely an important factor. Even if intent is "good" it's hard to brush off thousands (according to Bruce Wayne) of dead in the aftermath. Most would always say their actions are well intended, so it has to be a discourse beyond that of personal assessment. If we take the movie just for face value it's easy to pick a side and think nothing more of it, but confronting the havoc and death of loved ones as a result of the battles being fought is complex. I absolutely agree, it's fun to think about :) I'm not a comic devotee so I will just trust people's knowledge and assume the movie is not really up to par with the source material. However, from a purely dramaturgical and storytelling point of view, the movie has some faults, for sure. That being said, I actually enjoyed this version and it grows on me each time I see it. I think it is enjoyable and appreciate the ambitious attempt. I also think Ben Affleck's take on the character is great. Considering the universe Zack Snyder has made I think he fits really well. I also think Bale fits in Nolan's universe and Keaton in Burton's. They all have their strongpoints, in my opinion.

Sindre Kristiansen

Glad you watched this version - one of the reasons for the hate was the theatrical version cut out about 30 mins. Zack does take more time than he needs in some scenes, but the hatchet-job they did for the theatrical version removed a lot of plot and followup and just made everything a hot mess. I'm speaking from experience here, as I thought the movie was garbage until I saw this version, which was so much more coherent. A similar but even worse job was done with the theatrical version of Justice League, so definitely avoid that in favour of watching the "Snyder Cut". I can absolutely guarantee it'll be worth it for you.

crawlie

A lot of people hated the theatrical cut..I was one of them..when I saw this version..it made the theatrical cut worse..they included sequences that made the plot make sense and inexplicably removed them in the theatrical cut..keeping about 30 minutes that could have easily been removed.

Alberto Blanco

I didn't mind this film too much. Knowing some of the graphic novels and stories within the comics I knew what to expect when it was clear which characters were in this film. Even if it does suffer from the classic approach of rush everything to catch play catch up. Squeezing too much into too short space of time and not giving any time to properly set up and reestablish characters. This series does both the reinterpretation of certain character aspects as they might have been traditionally known, whilst simultaneously giving little to no time to introduce new characters adequately for my tastes. I do look forward to Wonder Woman next. As that film does a better job across the board with the story telling and character development that I look for. I think you'll like that one as well.

Daryl

Should watch Wonder Woman next technically if we’re talking release order, but then make sure you watch the Snyder Cut of Justice League. It’s the only version to watch.

Rainbow Dash

Im glad u liked it. Never really understood why this movie and Afleck got so much hate. But, I guess, if it doesnt stick to the source material, it would make sence, why the hardcore DC fans dont like it. Anyhow, personaly, I like the "Snyderverse" and I hope u continue the journey. Keep it up. :)

Lean

Also, for several years I was very torn on BvS, even the Ultimate Cut, but for me, Zack Snyder's Justice League retroactively makes BvS a much better and more enjoyable film in context with JL.

David Crabtree

I'm with you on Ben Affleck's Batman. That and Batman's rescue of Clark's mom is THE best Batman fight scene ever put to screen, in my opinion.

Mr. Writhms

I know this is a more controversial opinion but Ben Affleck is my favorite Bruce Wayne. He falls back on the more detective version of Batman(which I love) plus he has a much darker, obsessive attitude that always struck me as a bit more convincing. I have been a patreon of Jen's channel for a long time and this is one of the very few times I really disagree with her. This movie (and other Zach Synder movies, I am looking at you Watchmen) really makes you ask a lot of more nuanced questions about using violence to achieve peace. The first scene in Metropolis is a great example of this. I am not saying what superman did was right or not, but he was involved in something that resulted in a *lot* of people dying. And as a society, if superheroes existed this is something we would have to answer together. For a more realistic example, many cities have policies for when police can engage in a high speed chase. Take for example, someone who committed shoplifting an expensive jacket then got in a car chase with the police. They didn't pull over because they panicked, the police didn't back off and instead aggressively pursued. This person, panicking, drove into a crowd of people, or crashed into other cars, or did something that killed other people(or themselves) for a jacket. At what line do we do we say our actions in the pursuit of justice go to far? It also brings up important questions about how we should treat something like superman. He can destroy anything in the world but he "promise to be a good guy" and we just shrug and say, "sounds cool to me!" Batman brought up a good point when he inferred that without fear superman wasn't a hero at all. He can't die so what does he fear? The lose of his mom or Louis? What happens when they are gone? What happens if his hope dies and he is just mad at the world? I don't have the answers to this but it is fun the think about!

MattN

Loved this reaction! So next up is Wonder Woman, followed by Zack Snyder's Justice League(aka The Snyder Cut). Do NOT watch the 2017 Theatrical version of Justice League, it's an abomination. Actually, both Wonder Woman and Zack Snyder's Justice League are in my top 5 favorite Superhero movies ever! Given your reaction to both Man of Steel and BvS, I suspect you will greatly enjoy both of them!

David Crabtree

I enjoyed this cut of the movie even though the mash up two different comic storylines(plot points is a better description) into one I wished we would have just gotten the single story. But I hope eventually we will get something more like the comics. I'm glad you liked the movie even if it was a downer. But like most franchises we got to have a fall than a rise.

Prophet2272

Thank you Jen, you’re a starrr!! Something you may or may not know that could be useful, if you make a copy (or copies) of a video, they all process individually, so sometimes making a copy means it’ll process before the original. Unfortunately Google Drive kind of sucks for video in that way.

People didn't dislike it because Superman died (it happened in the comics), they disliked it because of things like Batman's years of obsessive, focused effort to be able to take out Superman if necessary was foiled because their mom had the same name and seconds later he's calling him his friend. Also, a lot of people were bitter that the whole thread of Batman and Superman having to fight was a major recurring comic story line which culminated in a fantastic series "The Dark Knight Returns" and the makers of the film just took the "they fight" concept, threw away the rest of a fan-favorite story and mashed it up with the story of Superman's death, diluting both.

Thomas Yanez

When Batman and Superman were fighting, Batman wasn't wearing his "normal" suit that he wore earlier. The one you didn't like is a special suit he made specifically for fighting Superman.

Thomas Yanez

I think it’s “Wonder Woman” followed by “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (Replaces 2017 “Justice League”)

Chip MC

YES!!! Ultimate cut of Dong of Justin

Tiger Chu

Yes, onto Wonder Woman! You will love it Jen!

John Lawton

Next up is wonder woman and Zack Snyder's justice league which wraps up the series. The rest of the DC films after that you can watch in any order cus they don't really connect

HalfMayn

Aw okay no probs, I normally download so processing isn't much of an issue, but i getcha :)

Mark McKeown

Yes! It always takes longer to process on Google drive, usually the link is ready the next day

Jen M

Yay thanks Jen! Will there be a download link too? Fanksss
