Star Trek (2009) Full Length Reaction

If you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

I loved this one!! 🖖 I know there were very mixed opinions about whether I should watch this as my first introduction to Star Trek, but I really had an awesome time and loved it!! Great music, cool characters, black holes, double Spock's, it was awesome! Loved the whole crew + I will declare now: Uhura is my first lady crush! So gorgeous and cool! I'm 100% on board to watch more Star Trek if you guys want to see?

I love this!!

The Chris Pine Star Trek trilogy is well done, slick and entertaining, and does an excellent job with the characters. Canon with alternate timeline and honors the Star Trek franchise. Star Trek (2009). RT 94% (Audience score 91%). "Star Trek (2009) reignites a classic franchise with action, humor, a strong story, and brilliant visuals, and will please traditional Trekkies and new fans alike." Leonard Nimoy very much liked Star Trek (2009): "I had a great time. I thought that J.J. and his writers had captured the essence of the fun of the Star Trek characters, the chemistry between the people, the excitement of becoming part of that crew and going out on this adventure. I thought it was a great ride as a film. I was pleased with how they treated the Spock character. I thought that they really got it. When they first called me and asked me to come to a meeting, I went to meet with J.J. and Orci and Kurtzman, and the conversation was very moving to me, because I thought these guys really understood what an audience really loves about Star Trek and what an audience loves about the Spock character.... When I read the script I called J.J. immediately and I said, 'Let’s go. Let’s go to work. I love it.' I had a great time doing it." "I finally got a real good sense of closure for myself with Star Trek, and I was very happy to see Zachary Quinto take over the character. I think he’s an excellent, well-trained actor and excellent for the job." "This movie contains a very broad spectrum of Spock’s character. I had a wonderful time making the movie. It was very close to myself. I felt totally comfortable, very much like I feel personally. Having arrived where I am as a person, and the place that Spock has arrived, I felt very, very comfortable with it. It was totally like slipping into a warm bath or an old, comfortable sweatsuit." "The movie is big, gigantic movie movie, cinematic movie. But it's also got great heart with the characters."

Since I saw you post 'Into Darkness', I had to watch this, only saw the YT edited one, was happy to see you watch this one, now I can't wait to watch 'Into Darkness'

Although I enjoyed the new Trek films, I gotta say this is the most valid (in my opinion} criticism of Abrams movies. They are more action focused. Still fun to watch, but it's true they lack a little bit of substance.

Eric S

Some people get really touchy about the new ones. I grew up with trek and I thought these were fun. Id love to see you react to the other two movies.

Eric S

I thoroughly enjoyed all of the Alternate Timeline Movies.

Best Star Trek films IMHO. Star Trek: First Contact (The Next Generation) Star Trek: Wrath of Khan Star Trek: The Voyage Home

Moooore!

This one brings out all the feels! Loved your soprano high note as the Enterprise escaped the black hole!

As you are no doubt aware by this point, the actor playing Kirk is Chris Pine, whose career was on the rise and this movie made him a bankable star. One of the three Chrises of the 2010s, along with Hemsworth (who played his father, this movie was a year before his first appearance as Thor) and Chris Pratt of GotG, Jurassic World, and Parks & Recreation (who is connected to Hemsworth as well, through the MCU). Pine is also known for playing Diana's love interest in the original Wonder Woman movie (2017) and in its sequel (which we will not discuss here). But I have to recommend for you the first movie I saw him in, 2008's Bottle Shock, which also starred Bill Pullman and Alan Rickman. It is a film about the California wine industry in the 1970s and is just brilliant!

Yeah, the end scene where Kirk has them "fire everything we've got" at Nero's ship that's being absorbed into a black hole is ludicrous. It's like throwing pebbles at a house that's being hit by a tornado. And then hanging around to get caught by the black hole ... that whole segment was cringeworthy.

Something they expect the viewer to already know, Vulcans do have emotions. They just devote themselves to logic. In fact, their emotions are reported to be much stronger than human emotions. It was touched on in TOS that they had a "violent, colonizing period" much like Earth and nearly destroyed themselves. Devoting themsleves to logic saved their civilization. The emotions are always there, just under control. Spock being half human makes it more difficult for him to control his emotions, and many other Vulcans looked down on him for it. The excellence he achieved in life earned every bit of respect he has with his people.

John

Unfortunately you miss out on a LOT of callbacks and references to the original series (TOS) by starting with this film. Example, Leonard Nimoy playing old Spock is the actor who played him in TOS in the '60's. When he refers to his friendship with Kirk, it's a friendship they expect the audience to already know from seeing them over the years. That said, it's a great opportunity to see it through fresh eyes and get your perspective without the backstory. Kirk's taking the Kobayashi Maru test is a callback to a talk about him taking it in Star Trek II. This was us getting to see the test we had heard about. Now if you watch Star Trek II, you'll already know and catch the reference from the other direction. It will be interesting to see how you enjoy it. TOS is very much a show of it's time - like the Connery Bond films. Very 60's. If you really enjoy Star Trek, consider watching them. The production quality is lower and it's a product of it's time, but the stories they tell are timeless and just as relevant today as they were back then. I highly recommend the films Star Trek II, III and IV as a trilogy. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is a brilliant stand alone story that builds a bridge between TOS and TNG (The Next Generation). Originally Star Trek was a show about ideas. It just happened to be set in space. I don't think Jar Jar Abrams fully got that and he tries too hard to make it a flashy action flick. Action is good. One of the big criticisms of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was it was "too cerebral." So definitely have some action, but it needs to be grounded in the drama and bigger ideas.

Not that you didn't seem to figure things out well enough for yourself, and I don't know how much of this you've already gotten from others. I'm not a full blown Trekie, which is what they used to be called when I was a kid, but as inspirational as the community is, being a Trekie used to mean that you were an uber nerd, and they changed it to Treker at some point, I'm guessing because they thought it would keep them from getting the shit kicked out of them all the time. So, I don't think you're supposed to say Trekie anymore, but I've probably seen a handful of episodes of the original show, I've seen all the movies, but I am much more of Next Generation guy. Unfortunately, you may not get how good that show is from the movies. Some of the other shows I was into some, others not as much, but I'm familiar with most of the history and lore. For me personally, what I love about Star Trek is that I see it as an examination of humanity itself. You tend to have different alien species that coincidentally are very representative of separate aspects of human nature, and there's always conflict that seems very familiar to human conflicts, etc. Spok and his relationship with Kirk have always been very representative of that to me. They changed some stuff up for these ones, deliberately swapped some stuff around from how it used to be, I guess just to make it interesting, but to me, Spok's conflict between his Vulcan and Human sides has always been an important thing, though Leonard Nimoy's Spok was never quite as dramatic about it as this one is. To me, Spok and Kirk were always like a yin and yang for each other. Spok, though sometimes conflicted, the more controlled logical aspect, and Kirk more representative of the emotional impetuous cocky human spirit that dared to defy it, and the two grounded each other. It always made me question what it really meant to be human. What is it that's so unique about us as humans, and whatever it is, is it something that's meaningful and worthwhile, or our own self-destructive folly. Just to fill in some gaps for you, Vulcans were the first alien species humans encountered after first developing warp drive capabilities, and the ability to venture further from Earth, and the Vulcans were friendly and tried to help mentor and introduce us to the wider reality we were just being made aware of. Vulcans have a much longer life span than humans, and can live to be as old as 200 Earth years old, which is why old Spok was still around 129 years in the future. Vulcans and Romulans were once, like in their ancient history, the same species, but for some reason, I don't remember, they broke into two separate groups, and Vulcans learned to purge themselves of emotions and live a life completely dictated by logic, and ended up advancing quicker as a species because of it, while Romulans remained more war like. In old Star Trek, Vulcans and Romulans basically looked the same, except Vulcans had very emotionless dead faced expressions, and Romulans had sinister looking facial expressions, but for some reason, in this Star Trek, the Romulans look like crazy ass biker Romulans. I don't know why, but they do look very cool. Speaking of, you probably couldn't tell with the Romulan get up on, but Nero was played by Eric Bana, a hunkie Australian guy that you'd like. I actually don't think I've seen him around in a while, but he had been killing it. You should see "Munich". Oh, fuck! Actually, if you want to see some crazy shit, you should check out an early Aussie indy flick of his called "Chopper" where he plays Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read, who is a real guy, which is kind of scary as hell. I don't want to spoil it, but you'll know what I'm talking about if you see it. Chris Pine who plays Kirk is really good too. "Bottle Shock" is a fun, light-hearted flick of his based on true events of California wine country taking on the French at their own game in the 70s.

This was great fun!

I’m like you I grew up in the 70s watching Star Trek and I too have seen everything and I’m in total agreement with you, there’s a reason we don’t see too many reactors do Star Trek, and that because the franchise is HUGE! It took me a lifetime to get where I am today.

RebRox65

I'm glad that you got a lot out of this alternative version of Star Trek. There is a lot of great value to the story told in this beginning. For me, it's the only one of the new ones that are any good. The others are fine, but they aren't reinventing the wheel or anything. They are more like a knock-off that you buy down the market. Perhaps most disappointing is that they missed a trick with the sequel, with the alternate timeline and all. Greater benefit could have been had by not just rehashing stuff with changes for the sake of the new timeline. Seems like a solid way to disappoint the original fans by not bringing anything new to the table. So, you as a new viewer won't mind as you won't have seen how things originally played out. Those iconic stories and moments tweaked didn't do much for me after this first instalment. As much as I liked the character chemistry and shifted perspectives. They just weren't brave enough to fully take things in a whole different direction on the follow up. It's a lose-lose scenario, damned if you do damned if you don't. So it's a similar situation to SW. I'll wait till you decide to visit the original films as I know like always you'll give them more than a fair shake. 🖖🏻

Daryl

As a hard core TOS (the original series) fan, I have to agree. Star Trek 1 is interesting from a historical perspective but mostly it was a love letter to the fans of the TV show. The trilogy of II, III and IV are peak Star Trek. ST:V is just... bad. ST:VI is a beautiful movie that serves as a great bridge between TOS and The Next Generation.

I'd suggest skipping Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and do the The Original Series trilogy which is Star Trek Ⅱ: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Star Trek Ⅲ: The Search for Spock (1984), and Star Trek Ⅳ: The Voyage Home (1986). If you love what you've seen, skip 5 and go to Star Trek Ⅵ: The Undiscovered Country (1991). I swear you'll miss nothing skipping 1 and 5, circle back later if you'd like; nothing will have been lost seeing those out of order.

I definitely agree that you have to turn off your brain to enjoy this film.

Riggo 82

Jen! This was a fun reaction. Like I said above this is a reboot in a different time line. While some of the feels hit harder if you’re an old fan.. it’s not required. This seems to have your interest which is great! Watch the rest. Watch the original movies. Then decided if you want to do the Next Generation stuff. If so.. worry about that then. I really recommend the original movies. You know the characters now.. and the original crew are awesome

Webwyrm

The NuTrek films are turn your brain off popcorn flicks, but fun enough to entertain for a couple hours.

David Crabtree

I really enjoy this newer series of Star Trek movies, but they are more action than the original series and Generations series, which focus more on story. I think you would enjoy all the different iterations of Star Trek simply because they all have good characters and good stories.

Vwlss Nvwls

I couldn’t agree more!! You’re definitely right and it’s a great react!! You’ll love it!! 🤩

MattN

🖖 I know this won’t be a popular opinion but I encourage you to keep going in the kelvin timeline. I started watching Star Trek with the next generation and ds9 and kind of had to fill everything in with movies and fan research. The great thing about this series of movies is you don’t need to know about the previous series. Especially the first one, it’s a primer to understanding the ST universe. You learn the original cast, starfleet, the federation, all of the tech, the cool things Vulcans can do, plus a few of the enemies of the federation. Plus it is in a separate timeline so I’ve actually had friends watch these movies then be excited to learn about the entire ST universe because these are great foundational movies. What I learned in these few movies it took me years to figure out with the old movies/series. Plus, it’s really awesome watching someone you care about learn all of this stuff in real time!! Awesome reaction Jen!! I love your love of all of the handsome men as well as the amazing Uhuru!! Don’t research the character but I would look up the actress who played the original uhuru and the impact she made on Hollywood for black women in film and tv. Really inspirational as well brave of Gene Roddenberry! Finally, I don’t think Jen gets enough credit for calling out amazing music in the movies she reacts to! This one in particular is so good!!! Thanks Jen!! I really look forward to you watching the next ones!!

MattN

As someone who grew up in the 70s with the TV shows and having watched everything else. There is no reason to not start with these 3. A lot of people act like this isn’t a reboot and previous knowledge is required. I appreciate the old stuff, the new stuff and every thing in between. I look forward to watching this tomorrow instead of working lol. Watch what you want Jen! Don’t let the Star Trek purists get ya!!!

Webwyrm

Sad to see starting Trek with this movie. The movie is fine don't take me wrong but theatrical Trek should be seen in order to experience it over the decades. It's like starting Bond with Casino Royale which thankfully you didn't.

Andrew Roach

Lol thanks John! 😂🖖

What a blast watching Star Trek with you Jen! That beginning with the first "Captain Kirk" (Chris Hemsworth) was a real gut punch. What a way to start the film! Definitely watch the next film after this one, Star Trek: Into Darkness. 🖖 Same crew, another excellent story. (Also, congrats on hitting those high notes during the movie! I love hearing you sing along with the music! You've got skills! No surprise there! 😊)

Finally! I thought you completely forgot about it, since it won the poll awhile back. Can’t wait to check it out. Definitely watch the second (Into Darkness).

As a lover of Star Trek, I'm excited to watch this reaction. A bit disappointed you didn't start in order at the beginning of the film series, but it is what it is. However, for the love of God, DO NOT watch the next Trek film after this 2009 film, which is 2013's Star Trek: Into Darkness, UNTIL AFTER you watch Star Trek ll: The Wrath of Khan (1982), considered one of the all time great sci fi films! These new Trek films, while entertaining, mainly rehash and do call backs to the original films. I'm glad you dipped your toe into Star Trek, but if you continue on, you need to watch Wrath of Khan before continuing these NuTrek films.

David Crabtree

I'm a long-time Star Trek fan (started watching multiple reruns per day in the mid-70s) and am not of fan of modern Trek (nuTrek). Of the offerings from Bad Robot (and their acolytes), however, this was among the least objectionable to me. There are a lot of plot-holes, illogical scenes (Enterprise underwater?), and universe breaking additions (transporting to a ship at warp)!? The actors do a fine job with what they were given but are more like caricatures of the originals. Don't get me wrong. While I found this to be an entertaining action movie on first watch, it doesn't hold up on repeat viewings for me. The next movie, Into Darkness, is particularly abysmal and actually broke my suspension of disbelief to the point where I couldn't watch it any longer. If these new movies were made w/o the Trek IP, I probably would have enjoyed them a lot more. As is, it's a hard watch.

Ron

I love these Star Trek movies…my mom watched the TV shows all the time but I was a little to young to appreciate it. But when the new movies came out I was hooked. You should definitely react to the next 2 movies.

David Martin

love star trek, and loved this film! Don't know how well the series' do for reactors, but even if you dont watch them on here, try them out in your private life! Star Trek The Next Generation (takes a bit to get into its groove imo) and Deep space nine are probably the best written. I also loved voyager though!

Chris

I actually think it's good for newbies to start with the new series. I probably wouldn't always feel that way about things, but they're fun, and it's a good way to draw people that are new into the world. When I first saw this one, I thought it was very clever that they wrote in a loophole that freed them from having to be consistent with the old ones. There's also a lot of fun stuff that you won't get, that they included to throw a bone to the old school fans, which is nice. Between the different TV shows, sometimes questionable quality of the movies, etc. it would've been a lot, and probably wouldn't get someone new as excited from the start if they started with the originals.

Richie Cabral

Having watched star trek since I was a kid in the sixties I am very happy for you to continue with the new timeline. These are fun movies. My only real nitpick is that no matter how good you are, you are not going to be made first officer and then Captain on your first mission. Other than that, bring on the trek.

Joeking

As a lover of all Trek, THANK YOU! 😊🖖
