This is not a true story. Maximus is a completely fictitious character. Marcus Aurelius, of course, was a real emperor. As well as a philosopher of great renown. Commodus, was named as co-emperor by his father in 176 AD. He was only 15 years old at the time. He ruled along side his father until his death in 180 AD. Commodus, is in fact credited with 100 victories as a gladiator, in the Coliseum, during his reign. Whether those victories were truly earned is highly questionable, though. After all, what gladiator would survive if he defeated or even killed an emperor in the arena. His reign lasted until 192 AD, when he was assassinated.
