Gladiator (2000) Full Length Reaction

Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.

Such a great movie! Heartbreaking, infuriating + inspiring. I admit I do not remember much history from high school so I am not sure if this story is based on true history or not. Feel free to enlighten me!

Loved Russel Crowe, loved to hate the dude that played the bad guy. Great music, beautiful to look at. What else should I check out by Ridley Scott?

Thanks for watching with me! 😊

*This is the theatrical cut! Also, I forgot to add the outro, sorry about that!*

⭐ Special thanks to Producers: MattN, Todd Preble, Incognito, John Walters, JT, Noby, SwimintheRain, John Gray, Randy Aiken, Barry Hammock, Celeste McAllister + those who wish to remain uncredited :)

Gladiator (2000) Full Length Reaction

"stab him in the neck" :D

Joaquin Phoenix is a crazy good actor. He was stunning in this. His character's sister was pleasant to look at, and was convincing in her feelings of terror. She will play the same character in Gladiator 2 (2024). Of course, Russell Crowe nailed his character from beginning to end of the movie. "Strength and Honor" "What we do in life, echoes in eternity." β€œCommodus is not a moral man." "I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

Master and Commander is one of my favorites, so I echo this recommendation wholeheartedly.

Makes way more sense from a story perspective too - Russell Crowe said in an interview that the scene where he reveals himself in the Colosseum is essentially a suicide note; once he's avenged his family, he has nothing left to do. It didn't make sense for him to live on, so dying once he'd completed his mission was a much better way to wrap the story up. Scott was completely on board, not just from the story perspective but because it also closed off the possibilities of any naff sequels! Really glad you got around to this - it's a genuine classic. We all had the very same tears rolling down our cheeks the first time we saw that out-of-context hand reach for the wooden door and that soundtrack kick in at the end. *All* of the feels.

Tim Christensen

Oh WOW I had no idea! That's so crazy and I really didn't even notice so that is SO impressive. It is a much sadder ending for sure, but definitely hits harder.

Such a great film, absolutely cleaned up at the Oscars that year and for good reason! A couple of good bits of trivia - Oliver Reed (who played Proximo, their trainer) died during production before he completed his filming and crucially, before they'd filmed his death scene. Originally, his character was supposed to go down fighting alongside his gladiators against the Emperor's troops using his wooden sword - instead, rather than recast and reshoot the role, Ridley Scott spent a HUGE amount of the budget on digitally creating him for the shot where he hands Maximus the keys and says "everything is prepared", and using body doubles and spare takes of Reed while he was alive to put together the ending we see here. It's one of the earliest photo-realistic VFX recreations of an actor in cinema. There was a knock-on effect however - the original intention was to have Maximus's army coming to the rescue at the last moment, and Maximus surviving the final encounter with Commodus. After digitally recreating Reed, and the hits to both budget and production timelines that caused, there was neither time nor money to shoot that ending, so it was re-written with Maximus dying of his wounds and no cavalry coming at the 11th hour. Sad as it is, I think it's a MUCH better ending.

Tim Christensen

Great reaction! May I suggest Master and Commander, from 2003, also starring Russel Crowe. A much underrated/overlooked movie IMO. It doesnt do well in polls so you can just watch it in your free time :D

Haha same

I thought Jen intentionally did a mic drop outro because of the emotional ending, lol. Gladiator started a wave of other period action films like Troy, Alexander, 300, etc... But a favorite of mine that I think Jen would like and was released the following year is the Count of Monte Cristo. Without spoiling it, all I can say is that it involves a map... 🀩

great reaction and one of the greatest film of all time. Im willing to fight anyone that says otherwise :) hans zimmer did the score, so u were "right on the money", when it reminded u of pirate of the caribbean it did sting a little when u wrote "...dude who played the bad guy" :) Joaquin Phoenix is, at this point, a top tier actor imo and i recommend you check out Her(2013) and Joker(2019) keep it up :)

Lean

I do this in everyday life also lol πŸ˜‚

one of Ridley Scott's earliest movies is 'The Duellists'...relativly low budget, simple story and visually stunning.... and for more 'historical' Russel Crow check out 'Master and Commander'

What we do in life echoes in eternity! Not exactly historically accurate but,it's authentic in its portrayal of life in 2nd century Rome,Marcus Aurelius,Commodus and his twin sister Lucilla were real people..check out the History buffs channel they have a critique on "Gladiator"⭐⭐⭐⭐.

We who are about to die, salute you!

Oh noes! Just as I’m about to go to bed 🀣 Guess I can postpone sleep. πŸ€ͺ🀘🏻let’s go!

Commodus existed, and did fight in staged gladiatorial games when he was emperor. He didn’t kill his father, but was appointed co-emperor and they ruled Rome together as father and son. Maximus didn’t exist. He was loosely based on a mix of different Roman personalities Including Spartacus and Cincinnatus.
