Crimson Tide (1995) Full Length Reaction

In my humble opinion, in the nuclear world, the true enemy is war itself.

Ohhh this was a good one!! Two stellar performances from Denzel and Gene, I really loved their chemistry together! This felt like an action movie, but with a thoughtful dilemma at the heart of it. Really really liked this one, thanks for choosing it in the Denzel poll! Are there other submarine movies I should check out?

Thanks for being here guys! 😊

Crimson Tide (1995) Full Length Reaction

Comments

This movie is, I believe, inspired by a real event. In 1983 a Soviet submarine detected missiles launched by the USA. In this situation Russia was supposed to launch an automatic nuclear counter attack against the united states. Stanislav Petrov, an engineer on duty, believed the missile launches were merely a computer malfunction and so decided to wait for corroborating evidence rather than immediately relaying the warning up the chain of command. By using his own judgment he possibly prevented nuclear war.

great movie good reaction . its fun watching things with you that you have never seen before

Any back talk to a superior officer is considered insubordination and a court martial offense..since everyone is recommending submarine movies I have "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" 1954, grandpa's Disney👍👍

Celeste McAllister

Enjoyed this one a lot. Love checking out these films I haven't seen in many years.

20 year rewatch for me. I actually agreed with everything Hackman did at the beginning, but only up until the initial confrontation with Hunter. His verbal explanation of the need for a unified chain of command was kind of funny, and must have been put in for the benefit of the audience (as any captain giving that speech to their XO, needs a new XO). I'm not a veteran, but the idea that differences in ideology could lead to a compromise of the chain of command is still terrifying. Still, I doubt that the whole liberal vs hardline divide would ever be tolerated in any real Navy culture (in either direction).

As a kid, we used to sing this in Church. The hymn only finally made sense to me in this context.

Could you serve on a sub? Yes, or I'd at least like to think so. I regret not serving in the Navy whether on the surface or in a sub. Is this the same song they sang in Titanic movie? Yes. Have you seen that film? BTW, one of the actors in Crimson Tide was also in the Titanic film. Danny Nucci played Petty Officer Danny Rivetti in Crimson Tide, and Jack Dawson's traveling/poker buddy in Titanic. Also, the marine that stopped Danny Nucci's character also played a Marine in Starship Troopers. His name is Eric Bruskotter. What's zero bubble? Verbatim per Google, "The up or down angle of a submarine underway, measured in degrees from the horizontal. A "zero bubble" is an even keel as contrasted to an "up bubble" or a "down bubble." (Ship's Clinometer demonstrating "zero bubble."). An inclinometer, or clinometer, is an instrument used for measuring angles of slope (or tilt) or elevation of an object with respect to gravity's direction. It used aboard a ship to measure the list when loading cargo and fuel. "That is no way to speak to your XO?": The Captain demands and depends on discipline, especially from his XO. He already had a conversation about questioning him in front the of the crew and he goes and does it again. This would undermine the confidence the crew has in their commanding officer and could interduce hesitation in a life or death situation. In the end, my opinion is that both characters played by Hackman and Washington made the correct decisions respectively. The captain was right to decide to launch the missiles. The executive officer was also right to push to hold until the full communication was received. This situation was.... complicated. This line always my favorite in the film from Hackman, "We're here to preserve democracy, not to practice it." My MVP award would go to Hackman. Things got heated, and his XO went up against him, yet he still recommended him for command of his own vessel. My worst award would go to no one. This was just a complicates situation Involving men do what they felt was right.

Oh ya good point!

No worries.. It was simply the lack of the usual "Download link processing, coming soon" or whatever, that threw me for a loop..

Gunnar Rea

It is processing, it can take a day or 2 to process on Google drive. Will post link as soon as it's ready

I think we discussed Hans Zimmer in the past after you watched Pirates of the Caribbean. Conveniently he was also the composer for Gladiator and a ton of other big movies. The song with the chorus wasn't actually composed for this film though, it's called "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" but is probably more commonly known in the US as the "Navy Hymn." It's not technically a patriotic song but is actually a pseudo-religious hymn dedicated to anyone (military or civilian) that has died at sea. It does have strong connections to both the British Royal Navy and the US Navy. Here's a good rendition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7o4Ltq_Dz8&list=PL0evjgOUzp6fOeCo8r6i93TsN_kZmDt8k&index=35

Das Boot is masterful. To get the full affect the original German version with English sub-titles is recommended, which unfortunately might not make for the best reaction.

Great movie, so tense all the way and some fantastic acting. Director Tony Scott isn't as acclaimed as his brother Ridley, but he makes some really solid action/thrillers. I would recommend: True Romance (1993) - Scott's best movie and written by Quentin Tarantino. Spy Game (2001) - Personal favorite with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Man on Fire (2004) - for more of that Denzel greatness.

No Google Drive download?

For other submarine films worth watching, Das Boot (1981) is a classic. Also, The Enemy Below (1957), which is mentioned in the film.

ArsTropica

Great performances all around, but there are a lot of contrived moments - things that would never happen on any US Navy ship - designed purely to drive the plot. "Zero the bubble" means level the ship. Scored by Hans Zimmer, who knows a few things about scoring films...

Snow, what's that lol. Yesterday it was almost 80 by night it was 50, keep you're snow, I want to run my AC again! Haha
