Interstellar (2014) Full Length Reaction

Love is the one thing we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space.

Wow. This movie is both epic + grand - about the mysteries of the universe, black holes and spacetime - and also personal - about love between a father + daughter and the importance of being together.

I feel like this one still has me thinking. I love ideas of space travel, time, the future of humanity, and of course love!! I really loved this one.

Should I check out more Nolan films or more space movies? What did you guys think of this one?

Thanks for watching with me! 😊

⭐ Special thanks to Producers: MattN, Todd Preble, Incognito, John Walters, JT, Noby, SwimintheRain, John Gray, Randy Aiken, Barry Hammock, Celeste McAllister, + those who wish to remain uncredited :)

Interstellar (2014) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Before I say anything else i want to mention this is the 10 year anniversary and they are planning to re-release Interstellar later this year. Jen you mentioned wanting to watch it again, I highly recommend finding it at IMAX or the best theater you can to really appreciate Chris Nolan's cinematography, and Hans Zimmer's musicology in this movie. My problem with such an amazing and grand movie like this is I have trouble watching the reaction β€”β€” I get so engrossed in the movie itself, then I'm like oh crap, it was such an important scene and I missed the reaction to it because I couldn’t pull my attention away from the scene. I was going to suggest Contact as a natural follow to this. I see you have it listed as "rewatch with friends" so you've already seen it which is great. It's of the same breed in so many ways, including a strong father/daughter relationship, paying strict attention to realistic science portrayals, a big role of Matthew McConaughey, a strong female scientist lead, great music, great effects for the time, etc etc. I normally wouldn’t even say this much about it but since you listed it as a rewatch, I assume you know everything about it.

Paul Hess

This was fantastic, thank you, Jen. Another with aliens, time travel, mother/daughter relationship is Arrival directed by Denis Villeneuve.

richard wilkinson

To be honest, I had no problem with the ending. After all, no probe has ever gone into a black hole, let alone gone in and relayed anything back. So, anything anyone comes up with is all hypotheses. With so much being correct in the rest of the movie, I can deal with the ending to a Science FICTION movie.

Miles E Coburn

Oh, and I agree with another poster - my lowkey MVP would go to both T.A.R.S. and C.A.S.E. Some seriously loveable and human robot-slabs going on there

Tim Christensen

Ahh, the full-length I've been waiting for! Interstellar is a true masterpiece - agree, on its first watch, it's a gorgeous, epic but overall quite sad film. But you're absolutely right that rewatches are in order - the more you see it (this must be my fifth or sixth time by now), the more hopeful it becomes. The last third especially is very dense and bewildering, but the more times you see it, the less you have to process, and the more you see that it is actually a really hopeful - and genuinely happy - ending. Cooper becoming the conduit between humanity's future and past selves, being able to reconnect with Murph just in time; witnessing the fact his sacrifice saved Plan A, GETTING BACK TOGETHER WITH T.A.R.S(!), and then heading off back into the wormhole to meet up with Brandt under the light of 'our new sun' *chef's kiss*. And all to the best soundtrack Hans Zimmer has ever done, and one of the best in general of-all-time. Again - masterpiece. Definitely something to bring out whenever you can't make up your mind what to watch, or you have a friend with a free night who has never seen it. It really does keep on giving.

Tim Christensen

I know, suspend disbelieve and all of that. The physics of the wormhole and Gargantua were brilliantly rendered, but I had real problems with the way they hand-waved the basic physics of gravity on the planets (including Earth). And the ending was a little bit too Hollywood woo-woo for me.

james repka

Oh I'd like to see that one!

Jen M

This one was a ball! You might like Sam Rockwell in Moon. That one has a crazy twist.

Jeremy Vickers

Glad you enjoyed Todd :)

Jen M

I enjoyed this watch along. Had been quite a while since I first watched this movie so it was a good night

Todd Preble

I know it well. It's on my list. Basically those two, Apollo 13, and there's a BBC miniseries from 2005 called "Space Race". That's my starter pack.

Absolutely more Nolan Jen.. "Inception" '10 was very good if you haven't seen it.. With Nolan it doesn't seem to matter what genre of film he uses to tell us his story.. Christopher and his brother Johnathan first build the foundation of the story.. the "heart & soul" which is the relationship between the characters.. then builds his world around that.. Most streaming co. Netflix, Amazon or whatever do it opposite build the world then hire a screenwriter and fill it in with characters.. end result, left with a shallow film.. eye candy but no soul..

Of course, while we are on the subject of The Right Stuff... Another absolutely amazing space related show I have to recommend (to be watched after that movie)... Possibly my all time favorite space thing above all else... From the Earth to the Moon (1998) HBO Mini Series. Tom Hanks co-produced. It follows the same timeline but after The Right Stuff. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120570/ It is a 12 part 1 hour each TV show style mini-series full of all the juicy documentary type information but presented in a way that most people will really enjoy watching. It's a documentary series perfectly disguised as a regular TV show. It's amazing. Most people would enjoy learning the history... but find documentaries too boring to sit through. IMO this was a perfect way for regular TV show loving people to enjoy a documentary. I've never seen anything quite like it. (I'm sure there are others I just haven't seen them).

Information overload coming up.... Now: In the early parts of the movie you asked about how realistic/possible a future like this would be. I'm not an expert on the subject by any means... but I'll try and share a bit in relation to the dust storms. I won't try to cover the rest of the space/time parts of the movie, but it is know to be based on as much real scientific data and theories as a hollywood movie can be. The giant dust storms devastating the whole world is very very realistic and possible. Given the right conditions of course. One does not have to image the future... but simply look to the past. 1930-ish - 1940-ish the great plains area of the USA was know as the great 'Dust Bowl". Severe rain drought and years of farming without the proper knowledge and understanding of "Soil Conservation" led to a very similar situation as shown in this movie. The farm lands where so dry from lack of rain, and so robbed of nutrients from years of bad farming practices that the dirt was mainly loose dry dust. Healthy soil rich in nutrients and plant matter is pretty much unaffected by wind. Take that away and a strong wind storm can sweep all the loose dust away with it. Much like loose dry snow. For about 10 years several giant 1-2 mile high "dust storms" swept across the USA carrying dust, like snow, across the land. Dust from Texas and Oklahoma areas was blown all the way to New York. (I believe there are photos of the Statue of Liberty covered in dust). Similar to snow drifts, the sides of houses facing the wind were piled high to the roof with mountains of dust. 10s of millions of acres of farmland was barren, entire farming towns were abandoned. Many families of the area, whose only source of income and knowledge was farming, were left with nothing. It was bad. Very bad. During that time and years after, scientist from all around the world worked together to come up with plans for "soil conservation" to make sure nothing like that happened again. Many laws/acts were passed here in the USA to regulate farming to preserve the nutrients and health of the soil. Including rotating of crops so the same patch of land doesn't grow the same thing year after year. And "cover crops" which are basically sacrificial crops planted every few grow seasons that help to add nutrient back to the soil. Along with technology to track rainfall levels to adjust the amount and types of crops grow in areas based on the amount of rain they receive. It was a scary time in history with no solution in sight on how to stop it. After 10 years normal rainfall finally decided to come back and ended the drought, ending the dust storms as well. Hopefully now that we understand what caused that to happen, and we have extremely advanced technology compared to then, dust storms like that are a thing of the past. But IMO given the right conditions it is technically possible for it to happen again. All the technology in the world right now can not replace rainfall. We can do much better/smarter farming with much less rain, but the rain is still really the one in control. TLDR: Basically giant dust storms like in this movie are very real. They have already happened. Lots of history and books and documentaries about it. The more people, the more farming, the easier it is to overwork the soil and create giant field of dry dust ready for the wind to sweep away. Hopefully we have the technology and knowledge now to never let that happen again. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for having my back on The Right Stuff

Richie Cabral

Oh wow, wow wow. You've blown my mind even more!! Thank you for sharing this!!!

Jen M

Oh yes TARS!!

Jen M

Holy crap. I think like 99% of everything you just said made perfect sense to me. (Or the fact that it made so much sense is a sure sign I understood none of it! Lol Who can ever tell). Thank you for sharing. I love going down mind bending rabbit holes like this. I have not done a deep dive on this movie myself. I have just watched it many times and applied an amateur science/space/engineering geeks mind to it to the best of my ability. Now I want to read up on it. The Right Stuff is an amazing hidden gem of a movie. For many years I never knew it existed. Literally anyone even remotely interested in space flight should watch it. It may not bring major viewing numbers on youtube but it really is a must watch movie for anyone with an interest in space. As far as I'm aware everything Christopher Nolan is amazing. Either Inception or The Prestige are are great choices to watch next IMO.

I really liked this. Thank you for reacting to it. Since you encouraged it in your outro I will give it a go: I agree with your MVP, no doubt. And although I really love the music, I think I would give my lowkey MVP to TARS. :) Time dilation as Worst Award was a nice touch! Anyways, thank you once again and have a lovely rest of the week!

Sindre Kristiansen

Wow! The first time I saw this, I thought I was tracking most of the way, but I think you did better than I. I had to cheat, and look it up. A previous comment claimed it went all Hollywood woo woo at the end. Haters gonna hate, but it actually meant so much to Christopher Nolan to at least get the science plausible, that he had physicists that wrote and published a book explaining the physics behind the concept to show that it was a theoretical possibility. I haven't read it, and I'm sure most of it would go right over my head, but since I looked up the crib notes, let me just throw this bit at you to be a little more specific about who "they" were, which I never would've figured out on my own. So, imagine a potential reality where Professor Brandt knows that he can't solve the problem of gravity, and comes up with Plan A as a means to carry out Plan B, knowing full well that Plan A will fail, which it does, but Brandt makes it to Edmund's planet, which is where her heart wants her to go, and carries out Plan B insuring the continuation of the human species. Those humans created by Plan B, the children of Brandt, if you will, eventually, over however much time it would take for such a thing to happen, evolve into a higher species that's capable of understanding and existing in a world beyond the 4th dimensional world that we're capable of comprehending. Since the only thing that can transcend space and time is gravity, they can't communicate with us directly, but they can use their knowledge and technology to use gravity to create the wormhole, tesseract, etc. that give us the tools necessary for us to make Plan A succeed on our own. Essentially, they're reaching across space and time in a retroactive attempt at resurrecting their own long lost ancestors! Why would they do such a thing? Love. You know, the kind of love that didn't exist when their ancestors were facing extinction and could have used to at least ensure the future of the species, if not themselves, which required Professor Brandt to create the con of Plan A in order to carry out Plan B, so that they themselves could exist, and that hopefully has become a thing that an evolved form of humanity is capable of! The kind of love that can extend across space and time to others you don't even know. You know. real love that isn't just self-serving. So, yeah. I'd definitely watch all of Christopher Nolan's movies if you're into it. I'd recommend starting with his first bigger movie "Memento", and I don't know why it hasn't been mentioned yet, but "Inception" is a good go to. Anything space is good! I think I've already given you my spiel about historical space race list of movies. I won't repeat it now, but please, please, please! Just please fucking watch "The Right Stuff"! I've fucking begged a handful of people, and my pleas continue to be ignored by everyone!

Richie Cabral

Oh Come On!! My copy of Interstellar is somewhere on 1 of 8+ hard drives non of which are connected to my computer.... In the middle of changing up my entire home media server setup. I thought for sure I had it on my main drive. I know I know. 1st world problems. I got really excited over the 8 hour wait. Another hour won't matter.
