One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) Full Length Reaction

I'm a goddamn marvel of modern science.

Strong performances + eerie music throughout this tale of power + mental illness. I think I'm beginning to understand just how big a star Jack Nicholson was + he has that undefinable quality of screen presence so you can't take your eyes off him. Glad I can say I've seen this classic. I wonder how different the movie is from the book?

Thanks for watching with me! 😊

⭐ Special thanks to Producers: MattN, Todd Preble, Ed Dunn, Incognito, John Walters, JT, Noby, SwimintheRain, Tim Drake, Ff, + those who wish to remain uncredited :)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) Full Length Reaction

Comments

It's interesting to note, the rights to this book use to belong to Kirk Douglas, who wanted to play McMurphy when his company optioned this book in 1962. After years of not being able to make the movie, Kirk Douglas allowed his son Michael to produce the book as a movie, tho he still wanted to play McMurphy, which didn't happen because producers felt Kirk was too old by this point.

Nurse Ratched has to be one of the most evil characters ever seen on film. Amazing performances all around.

Negative

I think there should be an Oscar category for "Best Performance in a Limited Speaking Role" because there was some great acting with people in the background on this film. They added a very realistic atmosphere, especially the guy that played Bancini. He was the patient who kept talking to himself and wouldn't sit down. Great reaction, Jen! 👌

Lol it took me long enough!!

Fletcher was equally great and villainous in DS9!

Such a great movie and serious commentary on the state of mental health care in the US at that point in time. Sadly not a whole lot has change since then. The performances are incredible, particularly Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched. She won the Oscar for best Actress and definitely deserved it. In the pantheon of characters you love to hate Ratched has to be near the top of the list. The American Film Institute actually rated the character as the fifth best movie villain of all time. This was Christopher Lloyd's breakout film role. And most people miss this but Martini is played by a very young Danny DeVito. Edit: lol, I made the mistake of commenting before I watched the reaction, nice catch with Martini Jen!

Been a long while since I last saw this one as well. Having never read the book, I can't compare. I know Nurse Ratched was top of that 'most hated film villians' for a long while. Took me a few years to connect that she was the same actress who played another despicable character in the Star Trek series DS9. Looking forward to getting to this one when the right mood strikes. But true to form, as my brain does the link thing. Another few suggestions, each tonally different. •Awakenings (Robin Williams and Rob De Niro) •Patch Adams (Robin Williams, Philip Seymour Hoffman) •Crazy People Dudley Moore, Daryl Hannah, Paul Reiser.
