We're back with Indy, Spielberg + John Williams! We got an adorable new sidekick + some great action! Honestly, I didn't realize this was a prequel until the end so sorry about that, but this one got me excited for The Last Crusade! Coming Monday!

(A grown up Short Round will make another appearance on August 8th in Everything Everywhere All At Once!)

Thanks for being here guys, you're the best! 😊

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) Full Length Reaction

Not a fan of this one as much, but didn't wanna necessarily skip. Looking forward to the next. I don't think I've seen you dislike a character that much who wasn't a villan. Brilliant! I'm guessing you've met a few people like that in your life and Willie was in some ways the personification of them. I could of course be wrong. 🤣

As a Brit, I'm ashamed to say that there's a strong chance the Thuggee as a concept were potentially invented by the British Empire as a propaganda tool - there's certainly no evidence from that time that (if they existed at all) they were Kali worshippers with human sacrifice etc. Though that is, if true, definitely not the worst thing the British Empire should be ashamed of, in the world, let alone India.

As as far as depth of character though compared to Mary and she was night and day different. Willie had next to zero background story where is Marion was completely fleshed out even with a falling out with Indy that added more depth to their relationship. Willie was kind of thrown in to the mix he needed somebody to kiss or someone to challenge his machismo. But beyond that anything we add to her is fan fiction. Considering the actress who played Willy I believe was married to Steven Spielberg you would’ve thought he’d have spent a little bit more time behind his pen when fleshing out her character. But yes I did that the first dozen times I watched this movie back in the day thought up a backstory to except the movie in someway and walk away from it with that at least. So totally feel where you’re coming from. The good thing we know is that this was a prequel and she came before he found Marion again.

Haha I agree Willy was annoying but like you said at the end, you're not supposed to like her because of Marion. If I could defend her though... she was someone who was just used to a high class life that took her a while to get because women didn't have a lot of social mobility in the 30s. Plus, she never wanted to go on that adventure, she was forced into it. When I think of it that way, while I agree she is annoying, it's easier (for me at least) to laugh at what happens vs get mad at her.

I agree with you 100% Tim! First, this is my least favorite out of the trilogy but I still really like it a lot! But also, seeing this as a kid scared me so much! But, that being said, it sent me down a rabbit hole of Indian history so in spite of the nightmares I did learn a lot of cool things about a part of the world I never knew about!

What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! It's the weakest of the original three but it's still a great film. I think you're right in that the real love story is between Indy and Shorty (which clearly makes him into the man we meet in Raiders), and that Willie isn't meant to stick with the audience because to do so would cheapen his relationship with Marion. I have to say, appalling as the Nazis clearly were, the Thuggee scared the shit out of me way more than they ever did - the black magic aspect, the human sacrifice that they'd clearly been at for a good long while, the stealing of children with essential impunity and Indy converting after drinking the blood... The other two films, the threat was 'what if the Nazis get what they're after?'. This one? They're like 80% there. And I can't think of another film made for young adults I saw in the 80s as a child that gave me nightmares like this one. Cinematic milestone on the compliance / ratings front. And I *did* warn you about the heart ripping!

Tim Christensen

Lol I feel kinda bad now but she bugged me!

Jen M

I was cracking up each time you went off on how awful Willy was! Hahaha

Jeremy Vickers

Indy is portrayed as more an egotistical playboy with a passion for riches in this film (the henchmen in the beginning even paint him as a tomb raider instead of an archeologist). Over the course of the three movies Indy grows a lot as a character. From a cinematic standpoint Raiders is definitely the best of the trilogy; it's a directorial masterpiece on Spielberg's part and it's also one of the best action movies of all time. I would also argue it's the best "Indiana Jones" movie in the sense that, as a whole, it portrays the Indy character in the most adventurous way. However, I think Last Crusade is the best story of the three and I'm petty sure you're going to love it. Interesting fact, Temple of Doom played a major role in creating the PG-13 rating because it was so traumatizing for young kids.

That red dress that Willie (Kate Capshaw, the current Mrs. Steven Spielberg) wears at the beginning was damaged in the jungle at night sequence. How? An elephant started eating the back out of it! When the costume designer was filling out the paperwork for insurance purposes, he had no choice than to write “Dress eaten by elephant.”

Zack Parks

My favorite Indy film! I use to know that movie verbatim when I was a kid. "No time for love, we've got company!". Short round is awesome! (great in the Goonies and Everything Everywhere All at Once too!)
