The Godfather (1972) Full Length Reaction

Comments

After Michael retrieved the gun in the bathroom and comes out and sits back down with Sollozzo and McCluskey, the look on his face is so intense. Like he is not distracted by anything, except focused what he was about to do. The juxtaposition of the baptism and the assassinations was stunning. I think you may find interesting the prequel part of Godfather 2. "I hope that their first child, be a masculine child." —Luca Brasi “That’s my family, Kay. It’s not me.” —Michael Corleone "Women and children can be careless, but not men." —Don Vito Corleone "Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever." —Michael Corleone

It's on the list! 👍

Love this when's Part II?

Really liked this one! I was shocked that the movie ended up really being about Michael as the new Don and his journey to get there. He started trying to have a life separate from the family but in the end he was meant to be the new Don. Can't wait to see Part II and see him fully formed in the role 👍👍

Such a great classic. Yeah the big shocks of the movie are so well done, and kinda the biggest surprise that people have is because the Godfather isn't about Vito - it's about Michael. He is the titular "Godfather". RIP the horse Khartoum, knew it'd have a major impact on you. It shows the strength, power and ruthlessness of the Don (who up until then seems like quite a nice guy). He's a man who can reach across the entire country, have something important to you killed, and then put it in your own bed without even waking you. That's why it's an offer you can't refuse... There's a lot of legends about the production, oft repeated - true? Who knows! The cat at the beginning was unscripted, Brando supposedly found it on the lot and picked it up. The actor who played Luca Brasi was so intimidated by Brando that he was practising his lines beforehand, and the director thought that'd also be great to put in the film. The book itself is really cool, and as usual adds a bit of background here and there - for example iirc Luca Brasi was meant to be the only guy around who could pull off a hit on someone single-handedly and get away clean, so he had a very fearsome reputation. Another thing we do see in the movie, but it's quite quick - when Enzo is so terrified he can't light his smoke from his hands shaking. Michael lights it for him, then notices his own hands are rock steady - like he's made for this life. Michael also gets his jaw broken by the punch, which is why his face is bruised for a good chunk of the movie. Look forward to the next, for sure!

Thanks! Ohhh boy the horse head. Yikes. Hoping none of that in Part II but I'm really looking forward to watching it soon!

Awesome your reaction! This is one of those movies I can watch over and over. And Part 2 is phenomenal. Your question about the horse head... In the old days, horse meat was used to make dog food. The movie production went to a slaughter house and asked for a horse head to use in the movie. So it was the real deal, but wasn’t killed for the movie. Imagine the person who had that job. “Hey, go pick up a horse head.” Yikes! 🤢

When Harry Met Sally is so good.

Daryl those dresses reminded me of Rachel's dress too! 😆😆 I did see You've Got Mail as a kid but don't remember too much at all! Just "F-O-X" 😆Might have to revisit that one with my sister at some point!! I don't think I've seen When Harry Met Sally!

It's the weekend. So let's revisit another film I've not seen in maybe nearly 20 years. I have seen all 3 at least once. I'm not especially a fan of criminal movies where villains are both the protagonists and the antagonists. I do however appreciate the first 2 for the story and particularly the cinematography for the first. The third, ehh. But you can't deny how this first film in particular, has infiltrated the lexicon of cinema. Being more than iconic, more than influential. "The Godfather is the I Ching, The Godfather is the sum of all wisdom." (More on that reference later.) I do look forward to rewatching part 2. As I do remember preferring that one. Although it's sometimes hard to always remember what positions are your own and those that have been assimilated from popular opinion, especially when memory fails you. 🤣 My usual semi related / unrelated stuff that filters through the old 🧠 📦 The pink bridesmaid dresses in the beginning reminded me of that one Rachel had to wear to Barry and Mindy's doomed nuptial. Unlike Rachel, nobody did it with their rear hanging out here though. 🤣 Your reaction to more than a few moments of this film, led me to believe you perhaps have not seen •You Got Mail But if you have, it can't have been as many times as me. As Tom Hank's character is more than a little obsessed with The Godfather in that film. (Reference earlier quote.) Love a RomCom. Or Twenty Five! Probably my favourite is •When Harry Met Sally

I'm really looking forward to Part II!!

Great reaction. The Godfather I & II are my favorite films and I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Very much looking forward to part II.
