The Mummy (1999) Full Length Reaction

I... am a librarian!

A beautiful nerd, a band of dashing heroes, mystical incantations, buried treasure, a sand monster back from the dead who's afraid of cats, and a 3000 year old map! What more could you want! This movie was lots of good fun and I had a blast watching it 😆

Thank you to all of you for hanging out and watching with me!

Sounds fun!! It's on the list 👍

Hope you will get around to watching The Mummy Returns, its a fun sequel. Everyone is back and they amp up the stakes this time.

Yeah, Beni running through all those religious totems is such a great character moment for him.

Eric

Agree above, 2nd isn't as good, but is still fun. And Brendan Fraser is one of the coolest dudes on the planet :D There were a few subtitles when Imhotep spoke to Beni in particular that you didn't have on your version for some reason, but he didn't say anything critical. Main reason he spares Beni is because Beni speaks some Hebrew, which is a language Imhotep recognises.

I finally was able to carve out the time to watch this with you. Yeah, I think it's just a really fun adventure romp with a charming romance. As you said, Rachel Weisz's Evie didn't have to change who she was to play a role in stopping the mummy, which is really cool (her whole "I... am a librarian" kinda embodies that; she's proud of who she is, and who she is is good enough); Brendan Fraser is very charming as Rick O'Connell, and the gift of digging tools is cool because he's giving her something she would want, the writers actually wrote the characters well and their relationship is really supportive and cool. And, again as you said: they had great chemistry. I think similar to Paul Bettany and Kristen Dunst in "Wimbledon": maybe you don't need both actors to be able to have chemistry with anyone, but when you do it's going to be a noticeable strong point of the film. The 2nd isn't as good; unlike the Terminator and Alien sequels, it's kind of just more of the same. So it ends up being an imitation of the first that doesn't really improve on it in any meaningful area. And the 3rd... Rachel Weisz didn't return, so the third is not worth watching, IMO. (She's replaced by Maria Bello, whom I like, but the chemistry just isn't the same). I'm glad you watched the first one though, and glad you had a good time.

Thanks Gary! I definitely liked Indiana better, it's in a whole different league 👍

Jen M

Ya I know what you mean! That's why I didn't give the mummy the Worst Award lol 😆

When this movie first came out, I was super excited about a possible "Indiana Jones" for a new generation, and then when I saw it, I was highly disappointed, as I didn't like it at all. I hadn't seen it again since that initial viewing until watching it here on your channel, and I have to say...still didn't like it, but it was fun to revisit and your joyful viewing of it made it a lot more bearable for me. I suppose I can appreciate it on a few levels; it's fun, and it moves. I can certainly understand why people like it as much as they do, even if I'm not really sold on it. Either way, an overall positive experience, rewatching it with you.

Awesome reaction Jen! I haven't seen this movie since it came out so it was so much fun revisiting it! Your cosplay was on point, and your reaction was great. Watching this as an adult now though I am going to make, probably, an unpopular statement... but I don't know if I would say the "mummy" was the villain. He fell in love with a pharaoh's concubine and just wanted to get back to her. Did he do some bad things? I guess that's a matter of perspective. The pharaoh imprisoned his love, he's organs where stolen by grave robbers, did he do some bad things? Sure! But does that automatically make you a bad person? I don't know! =D Jokes aside this was really fun! Thank you!

Oh my gosh, Hollywood needs to be more careful of accidentally hanging people holyyyyy. Thanks Lee, glad you enjoyed this fun one! 😊
