Once there was only dark. If you ask me, the light is winning.

Well here we are at the end of the season and it wasn't the ending I was expecting but I liked the hopeful note we landed on, after all that 😊

Looking forward to hearing thoughts from you guys on your overall feelings about the show!

Also looking forward to next week when we start: The Mandalorian S01 E01 👍

True Detective 1x8 Full Length Reaction

Great reaction Jen, this is one of my all-time favorite shows, and Rust Cohle is one of my all time favorite characters. I don't know how into Philosophy you are, you sounded intrigued by it. I majored in it in college for a couple years and it is still a fascination for me. Rust references Nietzsche several times (the flat circle concept), and the book "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race" by Thomas Ligotti is also heavily referenced. Also "The King In Yellow" by Robert Chambers was obviously referenced... the 'Yellow King' made his first appearance in the book "Haïta the Shepherd" by Ambrose Pierce (originally published in 1891) and was expanded upon by Chambers, H.P Lovecraft and others. It's a massive rabbit hole of fictional references and characters if you ever choose to go down it. Anyway, great job!

Excellent series + excellent reaction. Thanks. The depiction of the connection between Mary and Russ at the end this episode was cool. Would have been nice if everyone one of those men wearing an aninmal mask in that video would have been nailed, but the series was about much more than that, as you indicated in your outro. I like the way season one arguably ended with a sense of hope. I repeat your above quote of Russ: "... if you ask me, the light is winning." Season 2 - I watched years ago and liked it. I realized then that Rachel McAdams is truly a good actor and not just a pretty face. She was raw. Collin Farrell was also good. Season 3 - For some reason, I quit watching after 3 or 4 episodes.

Finally got around to watching the full reactions of this! Gaaaah, love this show so much, and so glad you enjoyed it!

Also you should check out Ed TV. Its not a groundbreaking movie or anything but Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play brothers. Their chemistry is so damn good.

Thank you for your support over here! :)

I should have been filming and editing but instead I binged your True Detective reactions. Time well spent. Great commentary on an amazing show.

So glad you watching this with me, I loved it! Thanks for the suggestion

I know I am a little late to the party as it has been several months since you watched, but I throughly enjoyed re-watching it with you. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I thought it was such incredible storytelling that was thought provoking and so unlike anything on tv at the time. Even here I went through all 8 episodes in three days (would have been less of work didn’t get in the way). Anyway if this hit you or any of your Patreon followers in the right spot I could not recommend more that you all try Yellowjackets. A lot of it is even filmed here in Ontario! I subscribed here specifically to watch True Detective with you and to hopefully watch Yellowjackets with you down the road if you haven’t already seen it

So, Jen, you say in the end it was fairly predictable. How they found the killer. But, you didn't predict it. And, neither did I, when I watched it, the first time. That is the mark of great writing, misdirection.

Thanks Caradoc. I do apologize it wasn't clear - I will edit my tier descriptions so there's less confusion in future. Thanks for letting me know. Take care!

Thanks for sharing this with us, Jen. I really enjoyed watching it with you and hearing your thoughts as the story developed. Sadly, I don't own a copy of anything else on your Patreon so I'll have to take my leave now. I wish I'd known I needed my own copy of anything you watch before I subscribed, but watching one of my favourite American series along with you was a pleasure and worth the £8.50. I'll still be watching along on YouTube and I will probably return if you pick another series I own, or want especially to buy, to support you some more. Thanks again for this series and take care of yourself. TTFN :)

Ohhh see I didn't notice that framing! Thank you, that's such a cool note 👍👍

100% the show isn't about the crime, or the mystery. I think the writer even joked that the network wasn't sold on his idea of two guys just talking in a car, so he threw in a murder to spice it up. It's far more about Marty and Rust, and their lives. Errol Childress, our killer - is definitely an enigma. He switches voices several times - we hear his fake "normal" voice when he's talking to Rust in 95, or Papania at the end of last episode, or the school teacher in this episode. He puts on a refined British accent after watching the same accent performed on the TV. He then changes to a more rustic irish accent when talking to his stepsister, before slipping into what's probably his "true" voice, a slurring backwoods drawl (the same voice he taunts Rust with in the old civil war fortress). This is also when Childress refers to Rust as a "little priest". I think we had a similar conversation a few episodes back - about how Rust takes on the guise of a priest in order to hear confession from the criminals he interviews. Additionally - the shot a few episodes back when we saw Rust in the old school at the end of the episode? Back when we weren't sure if Rust was the killer or not? The camera pulls back and back, until we see Rust through a window. The director is telling us that Rust is literally being framed. It's touches like that that make this the best single-season of television ever made. That and probably a thousand other things I've still not noticed after watching it several times :D Thanks for the reaction Jen, was awesome to hear your thoughts as we went through.

Oh ya I'd like to know more about Kenobi for sure!! 👍

Jen M

There's going to be a pant load for you to watch in the SW universe. I'm looking forward to the Kenobi and Ahsoka shows the most and Mando season three

Ronny Boss

Ya I thought The Expanse was gonna take it! But probably next time Really excited for The Mandalorian, just finished Prequels and Rogue One so my head is still in that Universe! 👍👍

Jen M

I had my fingers crossed for The Expanse, but Mando is an amazing show as well. Can't wait to watch it with ya. I will say though, once you watch season one, you will probably want to watch season two immediately after to see what happens next 😁 I say go for it if that's the case
