Law Abiding Citizen (2009) Patreon Exclusive Full Length Reaction

This is a request from my Top Tier patron Kai -- thanks Kai! :)

Well I wasn't sure I was going to make it through this one after a harrowing opening scene and a brutal torture situation in the first few minutes, but after we got through those scenes it was a pretty intriguing ride!

I'm still thinking about Gerard Butler's character and his motives, and what message the movie was trying to send the audience about him. Jamie Fox was solid in this but I was really focused on Gerard's character and trying to figure him out.

I enjoyed the cat and mouse between them and it was cool to see Gerard's intricate plotting!

I'm really interested to hear what you guys think of this movie!

Thanks for watching along with me :)

I bought the 4K blu-ray for this just to react to it… the box art literally says the unrated version is included… but it’s not. I hate that.

Also, I hope you don't get offended by my response as it contradicts what you said. I have a lot of respect for your opinion.

hahaha okay! I thought it was just me! You didn't say anything so I thought it was a US thing.

First and foremost, awesome reaction! I love your insight on this... and while I understand this will be an unpopular opinion in *my* opinion Clyde is definitely the bad guy. He was the bad guy in the beginning and he was the bad guy at the end. The director just did a good job of only emphasizing the nice parts of his life. But, when you look at Clyde's life he was always killing people. So, then if you want to know if Clyde is a "bad guy" then you have to ask yourself, "do I agree that certain people are okay to be killed and certain people aren't."? If you ask me that question, I would say no. I don't think he should have been killing people for the state, I don't think the state should be killing people, I don't think he should have tortured and killed the men who murder his family, and I definitely don't think he should have killed the rest of the people. As a society, we have evolved and advanced enough to stop killing people. So, based on that, I don't think Clyde is a good person. This ties into the idea of Justice and revenge. I capitalized Justice on purpose, because it signals some importance. Revenge is pretty much the same every time; inflicting harm for some injury. But Justice is different for every person and a highly debated topic amongst philosophers. Is Justice equality? Is it retribution? Is it need based? In Plato's Republic, a third of the book is dedicated to Socrates definition of it. He said, that the "just man would never to harm to anybody". So, what is justice for Clyde? To figure that out we need to ask, what is Justice? When you determine that for yourself it will really define who you think we should govern because it is that fundamental to how we think we should treat people. Personally, Clyde didn't enact justice... he murdered people... A bunch of people. And as a society I don't think we should stand for it. Which brings me to the next theme of the movie, revenge. In my opinion, Korean films tackle this better than anyone else. And the idea is revenge is destructive. Not just for who you are directing it against but towards yourself. If you peruse revenge you will only destroy yourself in the end, which is how this film ended. When he realized his revenge was killing himself he seemed almost peaceful as the flames engulfed him. Again... this is all just my opinion. I loved the reaction, and the movie is fun(in spite of my almost scathing critique). I swear I love movies :D Again, I know this isn't a popular opinion. So, please keep that in mind and don't blast me in the comments. I am just a silly guy on the internet. :D p.s. where everyone watching an extended or director's cut version of this movie? Every five or so minutes I had to readjust my version to Jen's. Maybe it's a US thing? I don't know but I was definitely off a lot.

MattN

I agree this film did make me wonder for several days afterwards what I would've done in Clyde's shoes! Very interesting. I'm glad I didn't give up after the leg sawing lol! Thanks for watching along with me!
