SPOILER ALERT! - If you have not watched the show before, don't read the following review until you have! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Loved this one! I really feel it gave so much info about the world as a whole! Suki is awesome (I love her design), I hope she isn't a 1 and done!

My boy Zuko definitely let me down a little here, but it is so interesting seeing his dedication, rage and honour always in flux.

And Sokka got a 'ship'! o_o

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

Well, if you were mixing up Sokka and Zuko, well, then just add Suki to the mix for even more similar-sounding names. Also, Avatar Kyoshi is definitely my favourite avatar before Aang, and I recently bought a book, appropriately titled 'The Rise of Kyoshi', which shows what she did in her time as the Avatar. Haven't read it yet, but I am looking forward to doing so.

Episode 7 and 8 is a two parter if I remember correctly, is it possible you can watch that in one go?

Kael Johnsen

I don't think Zuko intentionally tried to destroy the village, since the fires only started once the fighting broke out. So it was more like collateral damage (a hazard of firebending) rather than specifically targeting the houses. "I am a warrior, but I'm a girl too." That's such an important line. There's a belief that to be strong a woman must be masculine, implying that femininity is weak. But the way the Kyoshi Warriors fight is feminine, relying on evading, blocking, and using their opponent's own weight against them, rather than using brute force. Also, Sokka looks great in the uniform, no joke!

Madikuma95

Currently not, Kael! It generally depends on interest, but the first few episodes have done very well so hopefully that will continue! We have been doing one per week so far.

VEGGIE GAMER

Right at 16:55, you can see where Sokka had to fix his pants! Despite being only the 4th ep, this is one of my favorites. Sokka's rapid yet believable character growth was written so well. I also love that Suki makes a point that being a strong warrior doesn't mean she can't still be feminine.

Zippy

Hey, veggie I was wondering if you have a spesific schedule for when you release new episodes?

Kael Johnsen

Veggie in the middle of the episode (when Sokka challenges Suki): "5, 4, 3,..." My brain: "Wait, wait wait, since when do we do pauses in this reaction series?" Sometimes I'm just a little dense🙈😅

I have to say I was never a fan of those "previously on"-things in any show and I always skip them regardless of which show I'm watching. Because it usually really gives away which characters are going to come back and whch plot threads are being bpicked up again. And to me this ruins the nice moment of "Oh, I'd completely forgotten about this person!" or "Oh nice, I hoped they'd come back!". But if Veggie really want's to watch them I won't hold it against him either.🤷‍♂️

Diego Zenhäusern

I find this really strange since I never had problems with these names. But maybe its because I was there since it first aired

Not too much to say about this one. A solid early entry. You could even say "solid sidequest" but I think that's giving Aang a bit too much credit, haha. He didn't exactly have a quest.

jolt45

I think you got your episode numbers wrong, episodes 10 and 11 are no two-parter. I think I heard that netflix had some strange numbering as well, in case you looked them up there.

Lukas

Regarding Zuko and how far he is willing to go: I think this episode really struck a great balance: Zuko is clearly on the "bad" side, hunting the "good" Avatar to help his nation win a war for world dominance (and some not yet clear motives involving his honour). He lands on neutral ground and leads a war-party into a peaceful village. The village ends up suffering severly, with houses and the statue burning and/or destroyed. However, - and without defending Zuko too much - I think we still see clearly the same Zuko who accepted Aangs offer at the South pole and kept his word, leaving the villagers there in peace: He stopped at the village entrance and called for Aang to come out, basically offering him the same deal as before, even though he must realize that Aang could likely escape again just as easily as he did the first time. When his challenge went unanswered, he send his people in to look for him, which they did without damages to the village, until the search is interrupted by the surprise attack (although it's unclear how much force they'd have used had the search continued). Any buildings catching fire seems to be merely a sideeffect of fighting with firebenders in the middle of a village of very flammable straw huts and fire jumping over from building to building.

Lukas

Iroh is such a great character and only gets better as the series goes on. I would rate him as a close second in terms of best character in the series right behind a character you’ll meet in Season 2.

BakaSama

Its so Nice to watch with you. Soo many episodes i cant wait for. Next one im really lookin forward to is episode 7, then 10-11 as a dubble parter. I wont spoil any off the detail about the episode, exept that they are awesome, also episode 18, and the final is pure cinema, that counts for all seasons

Kael Johnsen

On the topic of spoilers in the intro: The intro itself doesn't contain spoilers (unless you count episode 2, which got the default intro added lateron, but was intended as a double-feature without separate intro). What people presumably mean is that after the intro sequence, there are sometimes (especially in later episodes) "previously on Avatar" clips, reminding viewers of what happened before. And while they strictly talk about past events, some people consider their pure existence spoilery, as they may hint to characters or events that reappear in the upcoming episode. If you actually watch these episodes only one at a time, once per week, you might like the reminder about previous events, as they will be even further back then when we first watched this on TV (with one episode per day).

Lukas

I appreciate this, Adriancatrin! I thought I was going crazy when I got the comments saying it was a Z rather than a J! XD

VEGGIE GAMER

you were right the first time on the pronunciation of zhao! it’s just spelt with a Z

adriancatrin

love your breakdown of kyoshi’s blend of nations! but while the fire nation was originally mostly japanese inspired, the final result leans more heavily chinese and SEA

adriancatrin

Sokka quite literally had the misogyny beaten out of him! Just shows how sometimes violence can solve problems 😌 (just kidding hehe)

Eve

unagi is Japanese for freshwater Eel, so thats why the "leviathan" is called that. In the show friends there's a rather funny episode about unagi where Ross thinks it means a state of total awareness. Don't know if you ever seen that show though so I wont spoil anymore than that.

Cari Ann

Love the kyoshi warriors, kyoshi is definitely a fan favorite avatar for a lot of people, shes pretty badass. Kyoshi island is technically earth kingdom but the warriors are not earth benders, I dont think you will have to wait to much longer to meet an earth bender though.

Cari Ann

Kyoshi island is super interesting in every aspect. The in universe history is super interesting, but I won't spoil that. But from the creators aspect it's super interesting as well. Like the whole villlage aesthetic, the clothing inspiration, and names are 100% japanese. But especially the warriors are a mix of Samurai, Geisha, and Kabuki aesthetics, and the fighting style is mainly Aikido. Now this is a minor spoiler, but you already kinda clocked it, so I think it's okay to say it. They are indeed part of the earth kingdom. Green clothing in general means earth kingdom. Now, they are on an island on the outskirts of the territory - so they are pretty much left alone and don't have much to do with the politics of the kingdom and have their own culture pretty much. But here is what is interesting: the earth kingdom is generally chinese coded, while the fire nation is japanese coded. There are so many ways you can interpret that, but I think it's interesting and intriguing, that the creators decided to make a past Avatar that was a japanese coded warrior from the earth kingdom who uses fans as their main weapon which lends itself most to air bending. AND not only to have that character in lore, but to have an island that maintains that culture!

PumpkinSparks

So glad you are enjoying it! I'm so happy I get to experience this all over again!

Rey's Got Plans

welcome to the confusing name triangle of Sokka, Suki, and Zuko! I love this show and I love the names individually, but jesus-fucking-christ what were the creator thinking?

PumpkinSparks

this is one of my all time favorite episodes. Always loved the Kyoshi warriors way of life and especially that music track that is playing when they are around is SO good. Also how they handled Sokkas change in his viewpoint so well

Tim H.

Suki is just awesome. I love the Kyoshi warriors, their clothes/designs look amazing
