I remember when I first watched through btvs I wasn't a fan of dawn (not hate just annoyed mostly) because she is such a good representation of a younger sister in my experience and my own younger sister was at that age when I watched it for the first time so I was just annoyed x2 😆 but now as an adult I love her character so much

2024-11-14 20:02:54 +0000 UTCYeah, it was Xander trying to make a joke with his gift to ease the situation with humor, as they were all trying to do— being strong in the face of Giles flying away! Here in the US, “Olde English 800” is a well-known (or was at the time, source: I’m 41, lol) brand of REALLY cheap, and therefore gross tasting, malt liquor. It was very commonly sold at gas stations and convenience stores in individual but large bottles & was so cheap that it was basically a meme in American media that the stereotypical “homeless drunk” character would have what was clearly a bottle of it in his hand, but with a brown paper bag around it enough to cover the brand name. Also, the drinking age in the US being 21 & the characters being unable to buy it legally means that Xander wouldn’t have been able to buy it himself to make his “English” pun, so the joke is that they asked the homeless guy to go in and get it for them, but he said no.

I think the Olde English bit was the writers trying to show how the Scoobies are still too young to know that it's some low-brow malt liquor US brand, plus them saying they were unable to buy it because of their age.

It kind of obviously had to happen for the show to continue, but it is SO sketchy from the beginning, especially not telling Dawn and Giles. And then, of course, the scene with the fawn, which was just... a lot to come back from

2024-11-13 21:25:31 +0000 UTCStart of another season. I'm kind of torn on this season myself but it has one of my favourite episodes in any TV show i've seen to date. I think you will really love it. One thing you mentioned that I haven't seen mentioned by anyone yet is about a new slayer being called when Buffy died at the end of the last season. As far as my understanding goes, when Buffy died the first time and Kendra (then Faith) was called the slayer line moved on to them. Meaning a new slayer would only be called if/when Faith's death, not Buffy's.

The number of time I've seen people lose their proverbial at a reactor for not doing the opening of season 6 properly is ridiculous. Maybe we're getting better as a fandom. :)

2024-11-13 08:25:54 +0000 UTCIn regards to Giles, not gonna say when or if he returns, but Anthony Stewart Head did ask for time off so he could see his family in England. Apparently the airport scene was really hard to film, because the cast had only just been told about ASH, and they kept breaking character and getting really upset, so it took multiple takes to get that scene right. The biker demons had to be dubbed as well, because of the design of their makeup. I thought they did a really good job there. Sorry for the multiple comments, the shift/enter thing isn't working with my keyboard at the moment.

2024-11-13 04:06:10 +0000 UTCBack to School Night for us was always a night very early in the school year when parents would be invited to the classroom to be given a basic overview of what we would be doing that year, so far as what my parents have told me. It sounded very similar to a syllabus but verbal and only for parents/guardians. My schools usually had very low turnout, but I went to very low-income school. That means that a lot of the parents were likely working because they worked odd hours. We also had a lot of students of immigrants, and the parents may not have really known what it was for and the importance? My dad always said that the kids of the parents who showed up were always the kids with the highest grades in the class. Terrible? Maybe, but it was true when I knew which parents were there. Students weren't allowed in the room on this night. Parent Teacher Conferences were different. There were none (after elementary school for kids not struggling), one (elementary students not struggling), or two (elementary students struggling). The one for all elementary students was close to the end of the first "semester" and had both parent and student. This one was absolutely mandatory with slots in the afternoon (school was half day for those days) or after regular school hours. By mandatory, I mean mandatory. The one for those struggling was later on in the year and only for the parent. All formats were one-on-one. Open House was much later on in the year when parents and students could go by and talk to the teacher/see some of the student's work. This was in Southern California in the 90s - very early 2000s, so pretty close to Buffy in reality. I believe numbered shirts were popular when this season was made, so it makes sense to me.

2024-11-13 02:05:29 +0000 UTCI teach at a school in California, and although we don't call it "Parent Teacher Day" (we call it "Back to School Night"), the teacher talking to all of the parents at once is quite accurate. I don't know why Dawn was there or why there were projects on display outside though. Usually that happens at an event later in the year called "Open House". Also, I literally had an uncut sandwich for lunch today haha. Cutting it is just an extra step that I can't be bothered to do in the morning. Edit: I almost forgot to point out that the scene immediately after Willow killing the deer has her in a blood red shirt. Sorry, I just love small symbolic things like that.

I can't believe you said Spike should get a motorbike, and then motorbikes appear en masse 😂

And you misunderstood the phone call scene, they don't want Buffybot to answer because they don't want Hank to know that Buffy is dead. About sandwiches: I sometime cut them, I sometime I don't. I had an uncut ham,cheese,mayo sandwich at lunch.

2024-11-12 20:41:01 +0000 UTCOkay, I now realise that I really don’t have too much to add to this yet until you watch the second part lol. Did you notice that Tara says “Grr Argh” with the little finger puppet thing, as a nod to the outro? I always think that’s so cool. I think this season for me is maybe about how hard adult life is, hence Giles (the grown up) leaving, so it’s a bit depressing in that way. I think there’s a lot left unsaid in this season, in this episode specifically. In the looks, reading between the lines of what’s said, in the changing dynamics. You can see how Willow is changing, her lying/omitting things to her friends to go ahead with the spell. It’s interesting. I find a lot to think about in Spike’s quiet portrayal, there’s so much heavy tension in the air. Dawn and him being buddies is sweet though, I really like that pairing. However, Buffy waking up in the ground is honestly terrifying but I think one of the most sad things in this episode is Dawn curling up with the bot when she can’t sleep :( Loved the reaction!! You may have missed a few little things like the Grr Argh because you were feeling passionate!! But only makes it more satisfying on later rewatch so don’t worry lol <3 thanks for the post!!
