[CLOSED] - The Harry Potter Book Club! - Your Notes for Chapters 28 & 29 of The Goblet of Fire!

THIS PART OF THE BOOK CLUB IS NOW COMPLETE! THANK YOU FOR TAKING PART AND SEE YOU NEXT TIME!! :)

Oof-Tee-Poof, everyone!! 👋

Here is a chance to get your comment read out in the next Book review video!

If you are reading along with the reviews, we are covering chapters "The Madness of Mr. Crouch" & "The Dream"! So if you have any thoughts, opinions, comparisons or questions regarding these, please leave a comment below!

I do have to ask, try to keep them fairly short, like 4 or 5 sentences.  That way I can cover more when making the video.  Also try to keep them on subject and not referencing anything that we are yet to cover. Ideally, keep it to 1 comment each if you can (if you have more to say after commenting, you can edit it and add to it! :) ).  These are just rough guidelines rather than rules, I want to be able to fit in as many of you as possible! :)

NEW FEATURE!! - As some of you may want to make a comment, but not have it replied to by others, you can now Message me your thoughts on the chapters by DM'ing me on here.  If you do, please follow all the above rules, especially avoiding mentioning things in future chapters or books!  Oh and please start your DM message with "Book Club -"!

To anyone that does reply to comments below, please make sure you are being friendly and respectful!  A lot of tone and meaning can be lost in text, after all!  If you disagree with someone on something, keep it polite and remember the golden rule in life - Sometimes you have to just agree to disagree! :)

Thanks, guys!! :)

I think it's fair to say they don't see over the maze in the book either though. That's one of the biggest reasons no one believes Harry's story in OotP, no one knows what happened.

Me Here

@Hilde so according to a Snopes article/Wikipedia, some Norwegians say "Det regner trollkjerringer" when it's raining heavily, which translates to female trolls? But let me know if that's bunkum!

Jake M

She-trolls? I feel like I should get it, but I’m Norwegian and confused 😂

Hilde

[replying to Mel's reply under the message that was deleted, because apparently you can't reply to those] Yes, I'm pretty sure that's also how Harry pays for his Daily Prophet subscription in later books (and also how Hagrid pays it in the first book when he meets Harry on the island). I don't think it costs a whole galleon though.

Alias93

Just in time! I wanna talk about a movie-ONLY scene that happens after the 2nd task. Crouch has a chat with Harry, then Moody enters the scene and says: "Bartemius! Not trying to lure Potter into one of the Ministry's summer internships, are we? The last boy who went into the Department of Mysteries never came out!" Is the movie saying the ministry has interns in the Dep. of Mysteries? Without reading OotP, even you know it's a secret place where employees are called "unspeakables". Don't think they would EVER take interns. If it's saying that an intern worked in another department but somehow got lost in there, it's still a bizarre mystery introduced out of nowhere that's never resolved. I don't like it. -Back to the book, I like the detail of Crouch's son getting 12 OWLs. He was an amazing wizard which makes the plot of this book more believable. -Krum is a character in the book!!! -How does subscribing to Daily Prophet work? Do they automatically take money from your Gringotts vault? -Just like the 1st task, I think it's great to see Harry train. And seems like the maze will actually have something to train for (creatures and curses). Sounds more exciting than the movie version, right?

Hi Veggie! I hope I’m not way too late to comment. I noticed that you started liking comments so I hope I’m fast enough to post mine. I really just wanted to say how impressed I am that you continue with the book clubs and only read 2 chapter a month. I think I’ve read the whole series four times since I started following your book club a year ago. Also seeing all these amazing gifts people send you makes me think of a coat hanger I gave as a birthday gift to my younger sister. When she didn’t understand the gift I told her it was an invisibility cloak and if she couldn’t see it then it just meant that she definitely was a muggle. Dara surely knows how to give amazing gifts.

Snjófriður

"How does subscribing to Daily Prophet work? Do they automatically take money from your Gringotts vault?" So someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I vaguely remember, isn't there a scene where Hermione deposits a galleon in the purse hanging from the owl's claw that delivers her?

Mel

Hi Veggie! We now get to see Hermione's stoic attitude towards Rita Skeeter evaporating and now she's furious! Don't think we have seen her that angry and vengful at anyone before. Maybe we're seeing Hermione's villain origins? :) I am not sure if I like that scene between Krum and Harry. I would assume Krum had asked Hermione what he asked Harry now, and she would have told him the same, that her and Harry are just friends. Why did Krum not believe her? And if he did not ask her - why? They are presumably in a relationship, or Krum wants to be in one - surely Hermione should be the one person he trusts? If he doesn't, why does he want to be with her? I don't know, for some reason this going behind her back gives me the ick. Hope you're enjoying the Crouch mystery even though it might have been partially spoiled by the film?

Katik

Yeah other than the moviemakers making forced "setup" for the Crouch Jr reveal, I don't really know what Crouch Jr's motivation was here. It's such a confusing scene. This is what happens when you skip the mystery of a mystery novel but still try to make it a mystery.

Me Here

Interestingly, when I watched the movie for the first time I interpreted this scene completely differently (and not at all the way the movie intended). I somehow thought that the "last boy who went into the department of mysteries" referred to Barty Crouch Jr (because we know the courtroom is close to the department of mysteries) and that "he never came out" because he went straight to Azkaban after the trial. Also, I didn't interpret the tongue thing as a slip up, but as Moody/BCJ mocking/blaming Crouch Sr for what happened to his son, by replicating his manerisms. Watching it again, I realised it's not what the movie was going for. They had to make the BCJ/Moody situation pretty obvious, because like most of the plot of the book, it's not explained at all at the end of the movie...

Read the books they said, it will be fun they said, there is so much you are missing out on they said, the G.O.F. movie (especially) SUCKS they said… Well, what say you now dearest Veggie??!! I was thinking about something the other day. As far as book numbers go, we are about halfway through the series!! The second half is, of course, A LOT, longer and far more in depth but, perhaps take a little moment of reflection for making it this far. NOT factoring in the book club and YouTube, what are some of YOUR favorite or memorable book moments so far???? I particularly remember your amusement to Harrys singing Valentine and Glidorys “Harry, Harry, Harry…” back in Chamber. On a more serious note, your admiration for Hermione alerting Professor McGonagall (RIP Maggie 😭😭) of the Firebolt, jeopardizing their friendship but, not Harrys safety in Azkaban. I sincerely hope it's been worth it for you because it sure has for ME. It doesn't get said as often now but, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. It's been amazing so far and I know it's only going to get better from here. Get ready 😁😁 PS. Behold a competent, measured Dumbledore in action. Notice how he showed confidence in Harry by NOT rushing at him like an unhinged lunatic. No chokehold needed He has Hagrid for that I also wouldn't have objected to the use of a pile driver, stone cold stunner, frog splash, suplex, sharpshooter, chokeSLAM, people's elbow, some sweet chin music, all topped of with an attitude adjustment on Kararoff, which he clearly needed. 110% justified

Rhea H Pelotto

"Don't...leave...me!" he whispered, his eyes bulging again. "I...escaped...must warn...must tell...see Dumbledore...my fault...all my fault...Bertha...dead...all my fault...my son...my fault...tell Dumbledore...Harry Potter...the Dark Lord...stronger...Harry Potter..." Even if we completely ignore the problem with the plot being almost removed from the movie, I think the scene with a desperate Barty Crouch is the one scene from this book I would've REALLY loved to see in the movie. I really like the Fudge/Dumbledore conversation – and Dumbledore's passwords.

H

Hey Veggie! I liked the part about Nifflers so much, that i used it as a template to write a little program in Java with a lot of bugs, for my Computer Science Students to debug in class. The Scenario was, that Hagrid needs this program to run properly, to be able to automatically see how many Galleons are left in his garden, for the Nifflers to find. I included a similar task with a LOTR and Star Wars scenario as well. Hope you and Woozle are doing Well!

Jonas (Methanoutput)

Hi Veggie Yes the riots were horrendous but what I was talking about was what sparked the riots at that dance workshop. The pre trial is coming up in October I think. I live closer to Liverpool than Southport so I don't personally know anyone who was involved, but a friend of a friend had to leave their house when the Southport Mosque was attacked because they were afraid for the safety of their children. Thank you for your concern 🥰 Chapter 28 I love the interactions with the house elves in the kitchen but I do feel sorry for Winky and then Hermione insulting them 🤦‍♀️. I do wonder why Madame Maxime thought Hagrid would be OK with her after her outburst after the Yule Ball, she's definitely cheeky haha. Those letters were awful but loved the niffler lesson 😀. Ron wanting one as a pet was fantastic though. I can't believe Mrs Weasley would believe that stupid article. Of course Harry and Cedric would be horrified about what's happening to the Quidditch pitch I think I was a little aghast myself when I first read it lol. Whenever I get to the part where krum wants to talk to Harry about Hermione my heart just melts, he's so sweet and Harry hit the nail on the head, Krum is an international quidditch star and yet he's worried about one of her friends being a love rival lol. Looking forward to seeing your views on the Mr Crouch part of this chapter. I was extremely confused when I first read it haha. Chapter 29 Who do you think the twins are 'blackmailing'? (In quotes because of them arguing about whether it is or not, whatever they've written to whoever it is). Constant vigilance! Always makes me laugh when he says that lol. I love Ron and Hermione helping Harry practise the spells, and this is why I always laugh at people who claim Harry only ever used expelliarmus, you finally get to see the range of spells he actually learns for the tournament. Hermione not wanting to be stunned again though is 😆, I don't blame her to be fair. The dream is interesting and confusing, what blunder? But Fudge's prejudice just because Madame Maxime is part giant really annoys me, she is also part witch for goodness sake. Hope you are well, all the best til the next one 😀

Liz

I'm not sure what you mean about Crouch being the one to say that line about Hagrid, he isn't in that scene at all, unless you mean Crouch Jr as Moody? But we don't know yet that it's actually him. In my version it's Fudge who says that line.

Alias93

"release sausages"...er sorry I mean " release woddawick" would have been amusing if gryffindor suddenly only started getting gruel for breakfast, and how can Hermione string harry and krum along like that it's hartless, thankfully molly knows how punish that sort of behaviour bless her. seriously though there's so much going on in this chapter compared to the film the crouch thing is so much better and the a sneak peek of what the third task will be, also there a lot of clues about other subplots that you will not realise until later I won't say witch because the may not be very apparent except in hindsight. Just noticed in my version of the book when fudge and dumbledore are in conference the line about about hagrid having a monster fixation is said by crouch so i don't actually know who said it. Also a while ago you thought jk rowling was making a reference to a tv show it was a while ago and I forget what but cockroach cluster is definitely a reference to an old tv sketch show if you know it.

Simon audsley

I'm sure plenty of others have commented on the disgrace of the movies leaving out around two thirds of the entire plot of the book, especially exemplified by these chapters. So I'll leave that as all my commentary on it. The Weasley family dynamic continues to fascinate. They clearly love each other, and in Harry's eyes they are the ideal warm, loving family that he never had. But they're also all flawed individuals with their own goals, priorities, and perceptions, and the financial stress they're under isn't easy on any of them, especially shown with Fred, George, and Ron in these chapters. Percy seems to be all of his siblings' least favorite sibling, and they believe or at least think there's a chance that he would turn them in for any crime without question. And as far as we know, Percy is currently the only Weasley kid living at the Burrow while the others are either moved out or at Hogwarts. I don't have any particular conclusions to draw from this, but it must be strange for him after all those years of constant sibling presence.

Q

Ah, the nifflers lesson. For book readers, this is our first introduction to nifflers; and so you can imagine how excited a lot of book readers were when they showed up in the Fantastic Beasts films as one of Newt’s signature animal companions. This lesson is legitimately the best lesson that Hagrid ever teaches in the books. It’s this class that I point to when I say that Hagrid could be a very good and effective Care of Magical Creatures professor if he wasn’t so bad at recognizing when he’s putting the students in potential dangers with some of his more fierce animals. Also, I have to agree with Ron. It must be really frustrating to come for a family with very little monetary wealth and have a best friend that’s so rich that he doesn’t even notice when a small fortune of gold mysteriously disappears from his pocket. I know Harry wasn’t really trying to gloat and flaunt his wealth in Ron’s face (he would never do that), but it still sucks. I do appreciate these chapters for being the start of Harry getting to know Krum and Fleur better and realizing/seeing them as real people. You see both Fleur warming up to him (obviously because he rescued her sister) and you see Krum actually jealous of Harry and Hermione’s friendship (which as Harry points out, coming from a professional Quidditch player is hilarious). Lastly, we begin to see some of the anti-giant and non-wizard prejudices of the Ministry again. Fudge is completely unwilling to believe the testimony of Hagrid or Maxime solely because they’re half-giants, despite neither having ever shown themselves to be in anyway malicious or untrustworthy. Glad Dumbledore called him out on his BS. Great chapters here! Really excited for the next book club. The next two chapters are great ones, and among some of the biggest things the movie omitted that upset book readers. Can’t wait to hear your reactions and opinions on it!

Kevin Morris

Yeah, that was exatly what I meant🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

I assume that's what Diego was referring to, I don't remember if Fudge interacts directly with Maxime at any point.

Alias93

Of course! I always forget that she was born in September

Steven

Hermione is 15, but regardless the hate mail is unacceptable

itsanursething

That’s a great point about Snape! I never thought of it like that!

itsanursething

But Madame Máxime isn’t there. Or are you referring to him taking about her?

itsanursething

Potato, potahto XD thanks. It annoys me that they never seem to celebrate her birthday!!! Only Harry's seems important.

Jake M

I really hate to be that person, but Hermione is 15. Regardless, the abuse she got from Witch Weekly readers is unacceptable. I’m 100% with you on that.

itsanursething

I had completely forgotten about Harry’s dream in this chapter. Fascinating stuff. I’m interested to see what you make of it. Lots of interesting talk about prejudices as well. Hagrid really let loose, but I don’t think he really thinks that about foreigners, he just had a moment of anger. Snape was so annoying! Why couldn’t he have just helped, instead of saying “the headmaster is busy” and smirking! How do they know which owls are school owls and which ones are pets? In my head canon, there aren’t actually any school owls, and Harry is just accidentally stealing other people’s pets to send letters to Sirius.

Garry (Not Jerry)

yeah that’s true it might be obvious already by the scene, my bad if so!

Andrew K

Yeah either of those rags are appropriate, either way rita is a horrible person and Hermione deserves to be treated better :C

Steven

I was thinking The Sun

Jo Winters

Is it? He does say he got away, doesn't he? Escaped?

Jo Winters

Hey @Gothic Llama! Suggesting Barry Crouch was tortured and kept captive is probably too much of a spoiler as that is in fact what happened to him. Might be best to take that detail out 😀

Andrew K

Hi Veggie! I don't have much to comment on these 2 chapters apart from: - I wish we had both Barty Crouch and Sirius (and Dobby, obviously) plotlines in the movies, sine they are very interesting and add a lot to the story. Plus, poor Mr Coruch had to have something done to his head as his mind was jumping from past to present. He looked awful, so I think he must've escaped some sort of captivity where he was tortured, because something serious must've caused him to look so battered and exhausted - if that is the case, what do you think somebody would gain from doing that to him? - Who do you think Fred and George are blacmailing, and why? - Berta Jorkins must've been very important, since we keep hearing about her. I like that we get a couple of mentions about her throughout the book, and she's not just mentioned once and forgotten. - What obstacles would you like to see in the maze? In the film it was so dark and misty, and the bushes just closed up the passages in some places, and here we hear Hagrid will provide some creatures.

Gothic Llama

I think the "password" for the headmaster's office isn't that important, it's more about whether the office itself allows you to get in or not. In the next year Umbridge is unable to enter it when she becomes headmistress, and she surely knew the password (she would technically be the one choosing it at this point). And then Harry can enter it at the end of book 7 by just saying "Dumbledore", which I doubt was the actual password at the time. On that note, Snape being able to enter the headmaster's office during book 7 should have been a clue that he was working with Dumbledore, if Umbridge wasn't allowed in then surely Snape wouldn't have been either...

Alias93

If he hadn't already been there before in second year, would Harry have any reason to think the password was confectionery? And regardless, the first chapter of Philosopher's Stone tells us sherbet lemons are something he likes, so they could even have been "things Dumbledore likes" and this year's password was "tenpin bowling". So it's probably more secure than you think- I'd be stood there for hours guessing random words without any clues!

Jake M

“It’s my business if you’re blackmailing someone” said Ron. “George is right, you could end up in serious trouble for that.”

Cj Hayes

I always interpreted "who are you blackmailing" was directed at the pair, rather than George specifically. George just happens to be the one he asks.

Jake M

Hi Woozle! And Veggie! (Thought I’d switch it up this time 😉) Hope all is well with you both. Chapter 28! So full of good stuff! So juicy! This comment could go on forever, but I’ll try to keep it short. Here's some of my notes. Expand as you wish: - poor, drunk little Winky - even in books people suck! Hermione’s hate mail *shakes head* - nifflers!! - when Hermione sets her mind to something…look out! - the maze!! I’m so so so excited for you to read the maze chapter! - is Bagman’s obsession with Harry becoming creepy, or is it just me? - if I ever own a tree, I’m naming it Percy And then we start off Chapter 29 with all the theories about what happened with Mr. Crouch. What’s your theory Veggie? I really appreciate Snuffles being the responsible adult here. He was a trouble-maker growing up and he knows what that can lead to, so he’s trying to do better for Harry. Gotta love him! The meeting in Dumbledore’s office. Harry sure has a way of accidentally eavesdropping on very important conversations. And then we’re left on a cliffhanger! So good! Hope you enjoyed these chapters as much as I did! Until next time.

itsanursething

Or just burn holes through the walls. 10 Incendio spells and you're there.

S1lm4r1l

Hi! It's interesting hearing Ron upset about being poor, but also hearing about how Harry remembers being constantly hungry when sending food to Sirius. They are both poor in different ways, a lack of money at home for Ron but a lack of love for Harry. I see people say often that the second and third tasks are boring as nobody can see them, but the third is in the quidditch pitch which has high up seating all around. Definitely easier to see over the maze than in the film. Which creatures do you think Hagrid supplied for the maze?

Ree

Hi Veggie! Hermione means well with the house-elves but yet again she doesn't listen to them and tries to enforce her views on them. Maybe she should focus more on getting the wizards to treat them better than persuade the elves to demand wages or things like that. She surely has a long way to go. Snape seemed to enjoy seeing Harry upset when he was trying to get to Dumbledore. Again, that's very unprofessional. He sees a student in distress who asks for help and he doesn't take him seriously. No one (except for Dumbledore) takes students seriously in these books just because they are teenagers. I love seeing Hagrid's more frightening side, we don't see it very often. He can be really scary when he wants to. I hope we'll get to see Harry trying to guess the password to Dumbledore's office in the TV show!

Janie

Hi Veggie, I’ve been busy and missed the last few videos but now I’m caught back up. I wish I was able to be apart of the last book club because I just love everything involved with the 2nd task (probably my favorite chapter/chapters in the series). In the meantime these videos have inspired me to listen to the books again (listened to or read them 6 times now I think) and working on getting caught up with them to be more involved in the book clubs in these later books (just starting prisoner currently). As for these chapters I’ll keep it short until I catch up. I really love the mystery here with Crouch and really all the mysteries in general. I just remember the first reading this book how these really made it such a page turner. Wondering how the lawn came out out this year? Greeting from Pennsylvania and go Eagles

Howiedoing

I think you might have misunderstood what I meant, I meant massive as in wide, the maze in the movie looks like it stretches on forever whereas in the book it seems like it's confined to the pitch. But yes I'd agree height wise it's about the same lol

Grace S

Hi Veggie, Not much to add to the house-elf meeting that others cover. The little mystery of how Rita gets her sources I always love as a side-quest from the tournament. The reveal is worth the build up, trust me. I fear Rowling wanted a ¨flaw¨ in character for Molly her enjoying gossip columns. Also Rita isn´t the only writer of the Daily Prophet, just a very popular one. Of course when Arthur (and likely would be same for Percy) gets slandered, momma bear in her resurfaces and curses Rita. I friggin LOVE the bit of Hagrid shoving Karkaroff against the tree while Dumbledore actually shouting to stop. Heh, for this scene in the Harry Potter tv serie they can let the new actor for Dumbledore do a Gambon copy. This is the first time we see Hagrid publicly defending Dumbledore´s honor like that and what he means to him. Not even a deleted scene of this in the movie, but Snape checking up on lovers in Beauxbatons carriages was filmed. Sigh. Dumbledore´s sense of humor yet again highlighted. Madame Maxime being an excellent dancer to answer an annoyed Fudge and his gargoyle always having sweet passwords. Haha.

Embran

The maze is still growing. It will be just as massive near the Third Task.. 20 feet high in fact the book says. Still, certain shots made the movie hedges look way taller. So even more imposing.

Embran

That's actually how I feel about the Lord of the Rings books/movies.

Alias93

I assume you mean that you disliked the movies after reading the books? :D Your first sentence is a bit unclear, but I always wondered if there was someone who liked the movies more than the books after watching/reading both.

Hairy Pothead

I watched the movies first and then read the books, and for a while I very strongly disliked them, but they are a separate media, and it would be good to remember what we thought of them having only themselves as standard. Man, I really dislike journalists like Rita. They do what they did to Hagrid and are doing to Hermione all the time; it is enough to ruin a good anyone's life in exchange for clicks or magazine sales. Even if the ones being tallked about are "bad" people, some really cross the line. Always good to learn about fantastic beasts like Nifflers and whatever is there to come inside the labyrinth, and the training leading up to it of course. "Nothing in Hogwarts ever moves just because you told them", McGonagall in the last movie might disagree.

Eduardo

Hey Veggie! For people who watch the movies first It must be amazing to get all this extra stuff about Crouch who was barely in the movie. Chapter 28 - Hermione’s creepy letters are appaling behaviour from Ritas readers. Hermione is 15 and theyre THREATENING her. Rita really is the embodiment of the Daily Mail in the Wizarding World, huh? - i love the thought of the little elves pushing the trio out of the kitchens, its something I need to see - I love Mrs Weasley but I cant defend the way she treated Hermione in this chapter. She knows that Rita lies about everything and yet she still chose to believe what was written, even after everything that happened with Mr Weasley at the world cup. - I hate the language Hagrid uses in this chapter, I always have, It’s uncomfortable to hear him talk like this. I recently booked tickets for the Studio tour in London for May and they recently teased a Goblet of Fire summer feature! I highly recommend the tour, it’s so good! Edit: Considering recent news, I thought i’d add this little bit about Dame Maggie. Her and Daniel were in a BBC two-part production of David Copperfield in 1999 (With future HP co-stars) and she recommended him for the role of Harry ❤️

Steven

"Felony is like an American indictable offence?" - yes, it is the more severe level. in the USA we have misdemeanors and felonies. felonie = Any offense punishable by death or imprisonment for more than one year. i expect blackmailing a government official would qualify. well Veggie does not know it is a government official yet. but blackmail would likely count in any case.

Garfnob

Felony is like an American indictable offence?

Jo Winters

Hi Veggie! Chapter 28 Notes: While it's awful what's going on with the house elves, Hermione is really going about it the wrong way. If you come out super strong with your opinion it is less likely that people will listen to you or be willing to listen to you again. It's so insane that hate mail can be sent to students like that. There should be some kind of security procedure so that no students receive harmful objects or curses. I hate how Molly chooses to believe Rita's article, someone she knows to write false stories, over Hermione, someone she personally knows. The maze is wayyyyy more massive in the movies, I wonder why? I LOVE SEEING VIKTOR AS A NORMAL TEENAGER DEALING WITH NORMAL TEENAGER THINGS Why must everyone hate on Viktor? Hagrid, Sirius, and Ron, none of them trust him. Chapter 29 Notes: Snape was being quite poopy here; things could have turned out sooooo much better if Harry could have gotten to Dumbledore quicker. My Sirius bias is so going to come through here but literally the point of him, James, Lupin, and Peter being rulebreakers in their day was to show that they matured, the war made them grow up so fast. Keep in mind that Sirius is only in his mid-thirties yet him and all of the others have been through so much it's insane. Lastly, do you think the Divination classroom could have actually affected Harry's dream? Edit: RIP Maggie Smith :(( Hope you and Woozle have a great day!

Grace S

Offtypoof, Veggie! We are starting to get more of a picture of how house elves view themselves now. It’s interesting that they seem to be equally embarrassed by Winky being completely distraught about being dismissed and by Dobby being happy about it. I empathize so much with Hermoine, it is incredibly difficult to engage with a cultural mindset that clashes so profoundly with your own personal moral compass. But Ron thinking it was a good idea to bring up the situation with Barty Crouch was pretty thoughtless. Of course hearing he was missing would upset Winky even more. On that note, the situation with Barty Crouch is certainly getting more interesting, and confusing. I feel like we learn a lot in these chapters that doesn’t make any sense yet 🤣 I really appreciate Harry’s interaction with Krum here, and the way he defends Krum to Hagrid. Hagrid is feeling hurt by Madame Maxime, but the whole reason that Dumbledore wanted to have the Tri-Wizard tournament at all was to make connections and get to know students from the other schools. It’s cool to see that it is working, that Harry is starting to see both Krum and Fleur as normal, decent people. It is nice to see Hagrid start to do a better job of teaching. I tend to blame Dumbledore more than Hagrid for his struggles at first. Hagrid is clearly a great gamekeeper, but those are very different skills from teaching. There is no indication that he’s given any help or guidance stepping into a totally different job. It seems like he has some good instincts, but he could use someone to just approve his lesson plans for his first few years as a teacher, maybe?

Ashley Evers

@Alias93 : Plus, the scene where they're singing in the forest cringe me to no end.

Mel

"Is she mad because she thinks Hermione is doing Harry dirty? Or is she aware of Ron’s crush and is indignant on his behalf?" That's the question I've always asked myself. 🤔

Mel

G’day Veggie! Hope you are doing well! Chapter 28 How interesting that Butterbeer affects house elves differently! Do you think it’s just because they are smaller or because their bodies have a different physiological response? Also poor Winky, she’s had it rough. I feel so bad for her. It’s so funny to me that Harry takes Snuffles food up to the owlery that night, but Hermione says they’ve “just had breakfast” when visiting the kitchens. Where did Harry store the food all day? I find Mollys response with the Easter eggs really interesting. Is she mad because she thinks Hermione is doing Harry dirty? Or is she aware of Ron’s crush and is indignant on his behalf? Hagrid says he has Olympe’s “number” but what number could he have? Surely not a phone number? She’s a witch, they don’t have phone numbers! Chapter 29 I love that even though Fred and George’s conversation happened before they came in the room, Ron still knew that it was George that said the comment about blackmail. That’s how close knit the Weasleys are. Love from Australia

Cj Hayes

Greetings, Chapter – 28 (big chapter) - The kitchen elves sound happy with their lives. Some people like to make others happy or it could be generational conditioning. - Hermione has a massive hole in her logic when it comes to house elves. Heart is in the right place, but she needs to think things through. - What stupid thing did crouch do? What did he escape? Chapter – 29 - Yay, Fred and George upgrading from petty school mischief to indictable offenses. They do not do things by halves do they?

Garfnob

So many things happen in these chapters that are not in the movie. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on all the new information you have learnt. Back in the first task I pointed out how Bagmen, as an ex international player, was impressed by Harry's flying and now Krum gives Harry a compliment as well. It Would have been nice if Krum was able to give Harry some tips but Crouch has to show up and move the story along.

Jacob sparks

Hi Veggie, not too much to talk about here. Mr. Crouch in the forest. What do you think happened at the scene in the forest, after Harry left to find Dumbledore. What you think about the Niffler class? Fred and George mystery goes on. Who do you think they are blackmailing and why?

Florian Krause

Yeah, it was impossible to do the book justice with only one movie. I don't have a problem with DH being two movies, but they should have incorporated the Dumbledores backstory and shown how it affected Harry.

Alias93

Goblet of Fire should've been 2 films, not Deathly Hallows.

Chapter 28 - The Madness of Mr Crouch * I bet you weren't expecting Nifflers to show up, were you? * People who send hate mail are terrible. Chapter 29 - The Dream * I like hearing about Ron and Hermione helping Harry practice charms and hexes. * Thank goodness Harry goes straight to Dumbledore after having the dream.

Connor Wilkinson

@Alias93 Not to mention a few seconds prior to this we get Crouch looking shocked when face to face with Moody, pretty much giving away the whole twist and making it plainly obvious who killed him

Andrew K

The book: Harry finds Mr. Crouch in the middle of a psychotic breakdown, who then vanishes without a trace. The movie: Harry stumbles upon the body of Mr. Crouch while singing the Hogwarts song with Hagrid, Ron and Hermione. :-/

Alias93

It's at the very end of chapter 29, the chapter ends with Moody saying that Harry is outside the door.

Alias93

Omg yes, the disappointment I felt in the cinema about this was wild

Jo Winters

Hi Veggie! Long time viewer, first time commenter. - I only noticed after you mentioned it in the last book club, but in the previous chapters, Sirius says that "Moody never killed if he could help it". But the first thing Moody does in class is torture and kill a spider. Perhaps a hint that something is off with Moody? - What do you make of Hermione calling Muggle inventions like electricity "substitutes for magic"? That struck me as such an interesting choice of words, implying magic as the default, even though she is Muggle-born. Thank you for your wonderful videos!

Margarita Pizza

I thought the same with Hagrid, he feels so much larger in the books. Re-reading Philosophers Stone at the moment and there’s so much description into his size and it’s he’s just much larger than it’s portrayed on screen (which I get given film limitation but yeah)

Andrew K

Cornelius and Madame Maxime is Chapter 30 I think.

S1lm4r1l

These chapters should be subtitled: "And literally everyone had an awful time." Why Hogwarts allows students to receive Howlers and hate mail is beyond me. Ron has to do everything the hard way. He's not brilliant like Hermione, rich like Draco, famous like Harry, good-looking like Fleur, sporty like Krum, or popular like Cedric. He's our everyman character. Samwise Gamgee but with even bigger feet. =) If Harry is running around and yelling, the matter is extremely urgent. But of course, Snape can't resist messing Harry around. Harry gave a pretty accurate summary. "Mr Crouch is here, he needs to see Dumbledore. He's ill." Snape doesn't even bother to help, except to tell Moody. Its a shame we never really got to see Hagrid be "Giantish" in the films. I hope we get to see the Incredible Hagrid in the series. Where did Mr Crouch go? Who are Fred and George blackmailing? What mistake did Wormtail make?

S1lm4r1l

Now we meet Nifflers for the first time in the series! It is a shame they didn't get introduced into the films until Fantastic Beasts. I actually feel so bad for Hermione in this chapter. Mrs. Weasley treatment of her sucks (especially when we know Mrs. Weasley dislikes Rita Skeeter). She may as well have sent nothing to Hermione. Now, Hermione may not care what Rita says, but to know Mrs. Weasley did care, must have made her feel really bad.

Hello Veggie, the previous video was awesome, we are getting all the great chapters now! Chapter 28 -This scene with Mr Crouch is fantastic. It chilled my blood when I first read it, and it chills it today. Mr Crouch being so trim and proper, and to see him like this, is shocking. It makes this mystery even deeper. -Snape really crosses the line here, where his unreasonable hatred for Harry is becoming harmful. How could he respond, 'the headmaster is busy', to these revelations? -Hermione has the wrong approach to Winky. She should approach Winky by validating her devastation, even if she doesn't understand it and it makes no logical sense. -I am 100% judging Mrs Weasley for sending Hermione this tiny egg. This is even worse than sending her nothing. Chapter 29 What do you reckon is going on with Fred and George?

Jo Winters

Hi Veggie! Chapter 28: Would you like to have a pet niffler? I mean they can be menaces when they try to steal everything shiny... But at the same time they are soooo cute. And we saw that if you have patience with them (like Newt) then you can have them as pets. Chapter 29: I don't think it is very secure when Dumbledore uses sweets as password for his office. Harry guessed the correct password on 9th try! I know there are portraits of previous headmasters, but if you wear an invisibility cloak, then no one would know who was inside

Kristina

Hi Veggie :) - I wonder how bugging would work around wizards nowadays, with so many Muggles having mobiles and computers? - I really don't like Molly here. Even if she has an opinion on Rita's article, Molly knows that Hermione is a 14 year old child. Not nice.

Sandra

Hi Veggie! We've arrived at one of my favourite lines in the entire series: "Hermione looked sadly at her tiny egg." It's so sad and I feel so bad for Hermione, but the matter-of-fact way it's written makes it hilarious at the same time. I assume the hedges in the maze can move around or that someone rearranges them on the day of the task to avoid someone studying the maze layout in advance. What are your thoughts on Percy? He doesn't seem that interested in entertaining the idea that there might be something more going on with Crouch than just regular illness.

Hairy Pothead

I've been rereading the later books and Harry doesn't get any less nosy in them either. I think he spends more time trying to eavesdrop on Malfoy than anything else in HBP...

Alias93

Yeah I just thought about it while watching the last book club, is there a rule that forces the champions to stay inside the maze during the task? Otherwise Harry could just use the good old "Accio Firebolt!", fly over the maze and get the cup in like 30s, before Krum and Fleur even get a chance to enter the maze... Also, the fact that Harry is able to use Accio on the cup when escaping the graveyard raises some questions... could he have summoned the cup at any time during the task?

Alias93

Hey Veggie. I have nothing new to say this time, so let me just say this: I love you! Keep up your good work :) And if my comment is now responsible for making the Video longer than 6 Hours, i am not sorry for that... the more the better! There can be no time limit for having fun :)

Benjamin Hütz

Yepp🤣😂

Diego Zenhäusern

Or grab a broom and fly over the top of it?

Jake M

The vast majority of the plot of books 1-4 has been fueled by Harry being very nosy 😂

Jake M

Cornelius with Madame Maxime, Sirius and Hagrid with Krum and even Molly with Hermione...I think it is really sad but also telling how easily a combination of stress and Rita's articles has brought forth/ reinforced prejudices and misstrust in all of them in these chapters😕. Also: "Harry Potter is brave and noble and Harry Potter is not nosy." I love you Dobby but I can't agree with you here; Harry is VERY nosy😅.

Diego Zenhäusern

And here is the second Hermione arc that was left out of the movie: her grudge against Rita Skeeter, who completely disappeared from the movie after the first task, so we never got to see the fallout of her article on Hermione and Harry. How do you think this will end? Mr Crouch's character is so much more interesting in the book. In the movie he just (apparently) randomly dies, but here we can see a lot has been going on that we don't know about. And that conversation between Harry and Krum is so good... we learn so much about his character in that moment. It's nice to see how concerned Sirius is with Harry's safety, and how serioulsy (no pun intended) he takes his role as Harry's guardian. The niffler lesson proves that Hagrid can be a really competent teacher when he wants to, and not just by following what other teachers were doing. With the champions knowing about the maze a month in advance, couldn't they just come take a good look at it from the stands and make a map of it before the third task?

Alias93

Hi Veggie hope you’re well! I love the Crouch scene, it’s terrifying and creates so many questions. It’s a shame this plot thread wasn’t in the movie. What are Snape & Mrs Weasley playing at in these chapters? Harry is clearly panicked and there’s an emergency, and Snape is being a little baby. Also, Mrs. Weasley knows how awful Rita is from when Arthur was involved in the paper, so why would she judge Hermione and treat her poorly over teen romance drama? Feels inconsistent. What obstacles do you think will be in the maze? P.S. I’ve collated everything Harry has eaten for breakfast in this book (I might have missed some); grapefruit quarter, birthday cake, porridge x2, scrambled eggs x2, toast (few times), bacon egg and kippers P.P.S. how did you enjoy Bash In Berlin?

Andrew K

I get horror movie vibes from these chapters, and its a shame the movie watered down so much of them but that pretty much sums up the whole GOF movie. I don't think I will ever stop hating it for how much it butchers the books mystery and drama

Josh Z

S'mae Veggie! Chapter 28 Skeeter and the size of Hermione's egg really blasts my skrewt. Did we not hear Mrs Weasley insulting "that wretched Skeeter woman" early on in this book, and yet now it seems she's reading her article and believing her spew (not SPEW)? What a hypocrite - it's honestly heartbreaking. This chapter also highlights the issue with owl post, especially at Hogwarts- people can directly send Hermione (a minor!) abuse, threats and even pus just by addressing her name on an owl to the school, without any safeguarding. She's forced to hear howlers in front of all the staff and students. That can't be good for her self esteem or mental health. Skeeter is knowingly getting revenge for her insults in Hogsmeade, which shows just how petty and immoral a journalist she is. However, the Witch Weekly readers who felt the need to send hate mail to a 14/15 year old girl are even more disgusting. Sorry this comment wasn't very light-hearted! What do you think Crouch 's biggest secret is, that Winky mentioned? Autumn trivia to end on a brighter note: whereas in English heavy rain is "cats and dogs", in Welsh it's "old ladies and sticks"; in Norwegian, "she-trolls" (not in the dungeon); and in Argentinian Spanish, "pointing-down turds are falling".
