“Dang pest” 😆 well played

BOOK CLUB COMPLETE! Thank you all for taking part! :)

VEGGIE GAMER

I love Hagrid so dearly. He obviously has some childhood trauma, making him often regress to a child-like state. The creatures are like his comforting stuffed animals. Yet, whenever he senses someone else feeling like a “misfit” (like Harry) or being shut out from the crowd (like Hermione in the previous book), he immediately becomes the protective adult. These chapters really highlights the reasons for his behaviours, in my opinion.

Kamilla Mari

Hey Veggie, i really love the scene at hagrids Hut with Dumbledore. Really heartwarming! Would have also made a great movie scene without much special effects but a lot of emotional acting! Hope you are doing well ☺️

Jonas (Methanoutput)

Hi Veggie! These chapters really highlight the difference in theme between the movie and the book. The book is a mystery novel with all these different characters and weird things going on which feels like it's building up towards something. The movie has almost no mystery and just focuses on the tournament and teen drama, without providing much buildup to the next movie. You've probably already talked about these points so no need to repeat yourself, but some mystery examples: - How did Rita find out about Hagrid? - What "hair curling" stuff does Rita know about Ludo? - Why are goblins looking for Crouch and questioning Ludo about it? - Why does Ludo keep trying to help Harry? - Is Crouch really sick? - Why does Moody say that Dumbledore gave Snape a second chance? Also one of my favorite lines from this book: "Harry remembered how touchy Myrtle had always been about being dead".

Hairy Pothead

This is a real reach lol. If he had been concerned that someone was hurt, I think he would have mentioned that at some point. The only thing he discussed was someone breaking into his storeroom.

itz_Cherise

Hey Veggie, thanks for being a little late so I could get my comments in :) There are so many moving pieces in these chapters: Hagrid, Rita Skeeter, Crouch, Snape, Bagman and some goblins. I am totally with Hermione about assuming Hagrid was a giant. That was my immediate reaction as a young girl when it was mentioned how much taller he was. they live in a magical world, surly it must have crossed some peoples mind. Harry is a fierce friend in these chapters. Standing up for Hagrid in multiple public places. I love that he calls Bagmen out for not offering help to Cedric as well. Part of me thinks that is fear of "the article" and being prosecuted that holds Madame Maxine back from confiding in him. like she cant even admit it to herself. It makes me sad that Hagrid hides the photo of his dad in a drawer. That should be proudly displayed. We finally reach the infamous stair scene. I remember being so stressed out reading that scene as a kid.

Carmen

Hey Veggie! I’m currently writing this on July 31st, so of course I have to start my comment by saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARRY!!” I don’t want to go to deeply into Rita’s article just because it’s horrible and vindictive. However, I will say that it always saddens me to read that part of the book and see how Hagrid reacts just because you really get the sense that he feels/knows that people will treat him differently because of what he is, rather than who he is as a person. A similar situation to what happened to Lupin in the last book. Thank God for Dumbledore being so kind and compassionate and alongside the trio reassuring Hagrid that there is nothing evil or wrong about him being half-giant. Lastly, as I’m sure many have already commented on in this review; Moody’s eye can see through the Invisibility Cloak…what is that thing made of?!!

Kevin Morris

Hi Veggie! There are some characters where we can just completely ignore how they look in the movie, and Krum being described as skinny and not looking tough clearly means he's one of them! I love how Hermione gets into the "RED ROSS" mode (to use a Friends reference) when she met Rita Skeeter, and that it ended with them finally talking to Hagrid again, and that it helped Dumbledore's argument. The end of chapter 24 really shows how much of a parent figure Hagrid sometimes feels like for Harry, with how much Harry wants to avoid disappointing him, but at the same time he's more of a friend. I really like Hagrid's relationship with the trio, and Dumbledore seems to enjoy it as well. Myrtle's reaction to Harry mentioning breathing is hilarious. Especially when she follows it up with the Olive Hornby story. I love the whole stairway scene with Snape, Moody and Filch. I like the power dynamic there, and how Moody completely dominates the situation.

H

I'm sorry Hawwah, but I don't see it as Snape being "brave, selfless and protective". More likely he just heard the noise and went investigate, hoping he'd catch someone out of bed 🤷 But of course your interpretation is as valid as any other 🙂

Janie

At last! Here comes one of my most favorite Severus scenes of all time. Everything about this scene is top-notch. The setting, the characters, the tension, the dialogue... *chef's kiss*. It's also a great example of JKR's use of indirect characterization. (Indirect characterization is when an author reveals a character’s traits through his/her actions, instead of saying it outright.) Actions speak louder than words. I believe it in real life and I apply it to literary characters as well. Severus was in bed when he heard the egg screaming. We know it sounds like a person yelling in pain. Severus must have thought that someone was hurt. Most likely a student, but possibly even a colleague. What did Severus do? He jumped out of the bed immediately and sprinted towards the person who needed help. He didn't even consider his own safety. That's indirect characterization. JKR shows us the real Severus behind his mean persona. She shows us a young man who's brave, selfless and always protective of others. (Btw, this is not the first time we see Severus run towards perceived danger.) People keep forgetting that most of the time we see Severus, he's acting. But when he's alone, lying in bed, he's not. He could have easily pretended that he didn't hear anything. Nobody would have been any wiser. But that's not who Severus is. It's such an important scene in regards to Severus' character. And a hint to which side he's really on.

Hawwah

Hey Veggie! I hope you and Woozle are doing well! Between this book club and the last, I got married! I've been all over the place, so I'm glad you're a little behind on the book club, because it gave me time to comment 😁 In 24, I like how Rita's article about Hagrid gives more nuance to Ron's beliefs on giants. Voldemort used them to violent ends during his reign of terror! That means that around the time Ron was born, a lot of people would have heard reports or experienced losses first hand due to giants. He may have grown up around people who would have been particularly afraid of them. If you haven't discussed already, what "inappropriate charms" do you think Albus' brother Aberforth performed on a goat that were so bad that they were in the paper?! 😅

itz_Cherise

I don't think any of the things mentioned in this conversation are plotholes. 1. There's no info given in Deathly Hallows about the invisibility cloak that contradicts anything from previous books. The story says that death couldn't follow the third brother because he was invisible. Xenophilius describes the cloak as follows: "Ah, but the Third Hallows is true Cloak of Invisibility, Miss Granger! I mean to say, it is not a traveling cloak imbued with a Disillusionment Charm, or carrying a Bedazzling Hex or else woven from Demiguise hair, which will hide one initially but fade with the years until it turns opaque. We are talking about a cloak that really and truly renders the wearer completely invisible, and endures eternally, giving constant and impenetrable concealment, no matter what spells are cast at it. How many cloaks have you ever seen like that, Miss Granger?” This decription matches Harry's cloak, which Harry thinks to himself too right after the quote. It's not a godlike object. For example, it doesn't hide feelings from dementors. They can feel the trio under it in Deathy Hallows. Harry can also be killed under it if a spell hits it. The cloak's main qualities are that it can't be summoned, makes the wearer completely invisible (from eyes), and doesn't wear down over time no matter what spells are cast at it. 2. JK Rowling's outside the book explanations shouldn't be taken seriously. Even if we do, Dumbledore could have used Homenum Revelio before they went under the cloak in Chamber of Secrets. And even if he didn't, there's no reason to believe Homenom Revelio couldn't show them. As I've already said, the cloak is not a godlike object. The Marauders Map shows them too. It's meant to conceal people from eyes. 3. Following what I've already said, it's okay that Moody's eye can see through it. It shows what a powerful magical object the eye is (I would like some backstory on it). Deathly Hallows are not the only three powerful magical objects in the world. So, I don't think there are any plotholes. But I have to agree that JK Rowling had not thought about Harry's cloak being a deathly hallow when she was writing Goblet of Fire.

Hi Veggie! I love the way that Rita Skeeter is being portrayed in these chapters, she really does personify the bias, rudeness and breach of personal space that represents the “evil” side of journalism. Always feel really bad for Hagrid in these chapters because he’s been through a lot and for Rita to bring it up again on purpose and rub his face in it is really horrible. I absolutely love Hermione’s reaction to Dumbledore answering the door at Hagrid’s hut, that must have been so awkward! Snape in chapter 25 is amazing. I know you’re supposed to imagine him as his own character but I can’t help but picture Alan Rickman here, it just fits so well. The way he acts in that scene with his anger and frustration mixed with the forced calm when Moody shows up really reminds me of Alan’s performance as the sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood Prince of thieves (as a sidenote I’d have to say that’s my favourite performance by him, it’s amazing). The bath/ pool sounds amazing, I want one in real life. It makes me wonder who came up with it in the first place? If the prefect’s have this grand of a bathroom do the teacher’s have a whole waterpark going somewhere else too? That’s all I have for now, loving hearing your thoughts, looking forward to the next chapters!

Snowspeeders &space shuttles

I just love Dumbledore. His care for Hagrid. His politeness and total lack of surprise that the trio have come to visit Hagrid. His “temporary deafness”. How he brought the letters from people defending him to show to Hagrid. His point about not holding out for universal popularity is spot on. What a gem. It is quite funny how Hermione immediately shuts up when she sees him though. Like “uh-oh, head teacher is here!”

Garry (Not Jerry)

Hi Veggie! These are great chapters! The mystery keeps getting more and more complex. You have to wonder what is going on with Barty Crouch. Do you think Percy really is poisoning him? I would love to hear what Myrtle did at Olive Hornby's brother's wedding. I agree that her character is a bit creepy and inappropriate, but she deserves a lot of credit in this chapter because I'm sure Harry wouldn't have figured out the clue without her. It's interesting that Myrtle says Olive went to the Ministry to complain about her; I wonder what the Ministry can do to punish a ghost. I also love the description of the Prefect's bathroom. I would love to have something like that in my house!

Maria

Helloo So, I'm not the biggest Hagrid fan (evidently). So maybe that's just me thinking that he shouldn't go back to teaching. Chapter 25 has always been one of my favorites in this book, purely due to the chaos and pyjama party. I also love the mystery parts of this book. Moody is definitely one of my favorite characters. Speaking of Moody, his name is one of the few that got translated to finnish. His finnish name is Villisilmä Vauhkomieli, which roughly translates to Wild eye Crazymind. The finnish translator has said that this was one of her favorite translations to make.

Will

Hi Veggie! I love Hagrid so much. I think he's a much more interesting character than he often gets credit for. His strengths become his flaws and vice versa. His compassion and respect for all living creatures, even and especially the ones most people are afraid of is definitely a good and lovable trait. It is also a problem when his priorities and judgment don't account for safety and the vulnerability of humans. His friendship with the trio and especially Harry is so sweet, and it's not the same as a lot of the relationships they have with adults. Hagrid isn't a father figure or much of a teacher to them. He's hardly a real authority figure. He's first and foremost a friend. And sometimes that's exactly what Harry needs. Hagrid isn't his guardian; they take mutual care of each other. Hagrid isn't an authority figure; Harry doesn't trust those. Hagrid IS an adult friend who cares deeply about Harry and has some life experience and wisdom that Harry really needs. And Harry is a young friend who trusts Hagrid and is also willing to bring some tough love, which Hagrid often needs (and imagine being a half-giant expelled from school and falsely accused of murder/manslaughter for years, I think Hagrid really values being trusted). The amount of care and handling the trio have to do sometimes for Hagrid wouldn't be healthy if he were their guardian/caregiver, and it's not really ideal as their teacher, but his primary role in their lives is as their friend, and I think that's really beautiful. That's much longer than I intended to ramble, oops. I guess I have lots of feelings about this. And doesn't Hagrid's dad just sound so lovely? Makes me wish I could meet him.

Q

Wow you’re right! I’ve never thought of that and it does make sense. One of the Hufflepuff traits is a propensity for hard work so maybe Cedric had felt cheated by being given the answer and didn’t want Harry to feel the same.

Ree

Regarding Cedric's hint, I think the timing is important too: he tells Harry to bring the egg to the prefect's bathroom two months before the second task, which should give Harry more than enough time to figure out the clue, while Harry told Cedric about the dragons a few days before the first task. Cedric probably didn't want Harry to feel like he got everything handed to him and just gave him enough information to figure things out himself.

Alias93

Hello! I agree that Harry is being stubborn and petty with his attitude towards Cedric, but I also think he holds him in high regard! He is jealous of him because he is with Cho and is an impressive person, but that means he sees him as someone to aspire to be like. I also find it almost sweet that Harry asks Bagman if he offered Cedric help, because this is a kind of weird moment for Harry and he might feel awkward, but still instinctively wants it to be fair for Cedric despite the current dislike and past quidditch dealings. He does later agree with Ron that he doesn't care if Cedric gets help, but I think that's a lot of Ron's influence. He even defends Cedric from Myrtle's staring in the prefect's bathroom! However, While it's nice that Harry is sometimes defending him, it is a bit strange that Harry outright told Cedric the first task was dragons and Cedric is just telling him clues. I guess Cedric probably actually figured out he had to put the egg underwater, whereas Harry was shown the dragons with no thinking required. So it's still fair in a way as they both had to work out the answer regardless.

Ree

Yeah it definitely was more just a movie thing for me since the actress who played her was in her 30s

Grace S

I mean Myrtle was 14 when she died, and the ghosts don't develop mentally so she is the same age as Harry. She probably doesn't get to speak to people the same age as her often since the other ghosts are all adults! So she's bored and lonely bless her (but still a bit creepy)

Ree

can we get a garish one, pleas? A nightdress... I love Snape, but so many thigs get glossed over, sadly...

Dara Jeeling

I always just assumed it was because the world is mostly muggles, and magical people aren’t really known to the general population. TBH I never thought it was weird until Veggie said something 😅

Elizabeth D

OofTeePoof Veggie, hope all is well! Ch 24 -> Rita is such a dang pest in the book!! Do you think the movie did her justice from what we see so far? -> I really love that Harry calls out Bagman for not offering to help Cedric. Despite all his faults, Harry really is a stand up guy. Ch 25 -> Myrtle is definitely less creepy in the book, but still hilariously weird. She kinda reminds me of Sadness from Inside Out. I like that she became a good sounding board for Harry to figure out the egg! -> THE ABSOLUTE STRESS I was under when Harry got stuck on the stairs! -> I’m a bit disappointed we never got to see Snape in his PJs; I really hope the HBO series gives him a nice billowy Snape-esque nightshirt.

Elizabeth D

******When I originally made my first comment there was only like 50 but since you pushed back the review I noticed we got a whole lot more…. so, I'm going to do you a solid and say PLEASE DONT BOTHER READING OUT LOUD THE MINI NOVEL BELOW!!!!! I don't want to edit or completely delete it because it got a few likes and that's not fair to them. Plus I skimmed through a few other comments and noticed people saying pretty much the same thing as me so I'm already happy to be validated lol!!!! The only “new” thing I'll add is I hope you are enjoying all the backstory and insight the books provide to our beloved characters!! CHEERS!!!!!! Stop reading now, thanks👍👍****** Been looking forward to this for awhile…this is my first time mentioning HAGRID, defending and making a case for him. I noticed there isn't a lot of comments this time so I'm making this a bit longer than usual. Sorry 🥴🥴 I think Hagrid is drawn towards more dangerous creatures because he sees HIMSELF in them. His anguish at being “outed” proves it. Hagrid is very much aware of the stigma and stereotypes associated with giants and other creatures… I'm not saying they are always wrong but, it IS wrong when it comes to Hagrid. I think this is why he doesn't automatically cast away creatures simply for what they look like. HE looks for the good in them which is what he wants others to do FOR HIM before jumping to conclusions. I think this is highly admirable and an important lesson to be taught. Every creature has some degree of WORTH or, at least, deserves chance yes, even MONSTERS. This is the message he is trying to project We also have to remember Hagrids vast knowledge of magical creatures was mostly SELF TAUGHT from his own experiences. After Hagrid was falsely framed and robbed of his structured magical education he turned too…. the forest. He learned everything there, not in a classroom. His expulsion also ripped him away from his peerage and direct age group... hence tea time with the 118 year old Dumbledore and 14-15 year old trio to support and cheer him up. He is very emotionally stunnted. Hagrid gets a lot of flack for his sometimes loose tongue and handling of information but, we were ALL like that at some point until we learned better from experience. Hagrids experience and education for all that stuff ended when he just was 13. When you take all that into account, Hagrids behavior and actions make a lot more sense. My point is I love Hagrid for exactly who he is yesterday, today, tomorrow, and 50 YEARS from now!!!! Rip Robbie 😭😭

Rhea H Pelotto

"leave that welsh tart alone" nice bit of teenage pettiness from harry, I'm not excepting his help he's dating cho. bagman looking as suspicious as ever and crouch is missing and apparently roaming the castle, a lot's going on that isn't even hinted at in the film and how did rita find out about hagrid it's not like she was there, so was it ron or harry who snitched. A lot of good book exclusive content this time that's basically one scene in the movie, and rita skeeter may be vicious but she's got nothing on moaning Myrtle she'll haunt you for life. also the use of wizard in the case of the Weasley's wizard wheezes is a play on word the use of wizard in this case is the slang usage meaning good. And you seem to be very concerned about dragon welfare during the last chapters where harry is described as using chopped dragons liver...I don't think live dragons let you harvest that

Simon audsley

A lot different than the movie isn't it? What did you think of the skrewts? Skeeter to me is like a particularly nasty tabloid reporter. If she can't find a legit story then just make one up. What she did to Hagrid was awful.

Annette Elliott

While thats true, i’d still argue that its strange that no one thought it was at least possible that he could have some giant ancestry and being surprised about it when Rita reveals it

Steven

I've figured it out. Dumbledore mentions Grubbly-Plank during the Start of term feast in Movie 5. For some reason I must've implanted it into Movie 3.

S1lm4r1l

There's so many different ways for a Wizard to be gigantically (get it?) tall though. Like Malfoy says, he might've eaten something, taken something, got in the way of a stretching jinx. Whilst Magic can solve a lot of things, it cannot solve everything. It is possible they thought Hagrid was involved in an experiment that went wrong. None of the younger students knew that Hagrid was big from birth.

S1lm4r1l

Hi Veggie! Ain't this a great book! How do you think Rita is getting her info?

Raider Max

Hey veggie! Theres A LOT of good stuff in these chapters. - I LOVE the entire sub plot of the skrewts in this book, every time we hear of them it just gets even more fascinating and now we learn that Hagrid may have CREATED THEM?! - I don’t like Professor Grubbly-Plank’s approach to a lesson where only half of the students can effectively participate. She should have given the boys something they could learn about as well if they weren’t able to approach the unicorn. - We get to see how insecure Hagrid is of his parentage. I hate seeing Hagrid sad but this chapter just makes me love him even more, and It’s awesome how supportive his dad was about encouraging his son to embrace who he is, i’d like to know more about his upbringing and relationship with his father. - What do you think is going on with Ludo? and what Rita was referring to? -if Hagrid was 7 or 8 foot tall at age 11… How did NO ONE think theres a chance he could part giant? Surely someone had to have thought it was possible? I don’t understand why they’re surprised if they at least thought it was possible

Steven

Oh, I definitely see your point! Cedric is for sure a really decent dude so I can see why he would want to be fair.

Grace S

It could be Cedric’s Hufflepuff nature of giving Harry a hint to pay him back but still being fair by not just telling him outright. Although it isn’t equal to what Harry told him about the dragons at all, but he still pointed him in the right direction at least so idk 🤷‍♂️

Andrew K

Hi Veggie! Chapter 24 Notes: Harry does have a point about the egg clue, why didn't Cedric just tell him? We meet Grubbly-Plank, who was mentioned in the Potter musicals btw. How do you think Rita found out about Hagrid? What do you think she has planned for Hermione? The kids also have a point, I love Hagrid, but he isn't the best teacher. Aberforth mentioned! I find his character so interesting, I mean, imagine having Albus Dumbledore as a brother. The end of this chapter always makes me tear up, people often forget how prominent a figure Hagrid is in Harry's life, and this chapter just really reminds me of that bond. Chapter 25 Notes: Is it just me, or do the bubbles in the bath sound oddly delicious? I've always found Myrtle really creepy during this part, especially in the movie. Harry is only 14, pretty weird. Also, she spies on the other prefects too?? Another point, she used to be able to leave Hogwarts before being confined to where she died. Do you think the other ghosts had something like that happen to them? What do you think is going on with Crouch? We know from the Pensieve scene in the movie that he was a judge for on trial death eaters, but do you wonder if he was a lot more extreme in the books? On a different note, I think that Moody truly means everything he says, just in a different context. Lots of double meanings. Anyway, I hope you and woozle have a great day!

Grace S

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the wizard government is not well run. I can absolutely see the ministry of magic being the kind of place to put course requirements over common sense. Fudge certainly seems the type.

Sab

Hermione is sitting at the table too, apparently alone, and the book makes a point of noting how much time he and Hermione are spending together. Moody will be watching Harry closely all through the year and must've noticed this. Again, he might assume that its Harry. Which is more tenuous, but perfectly valid. I think the fact that Moody knows he's wearing the cloak would indicate that the Eye doesn't see straight through it as though it wasn't there. He can still tell that Harry is wearing an Invisibility Cloak. Either way, that Eye is more powerful than it has any right to be. Wonder where Moody got it? Is it a Dark Artefact/ Dark Magic?

S1lm4r1l

muggle studies might be a requirement, but muggle born or half blood (meaning one parent muggle, not the case for all half bloods) should be an alternate option. would be in a well run government. (i know the wizard government is not well run) " If I was suddenly in the magical world I would want to spend all my time immersed in it, not constantly in the regular world. " - i think this is the most likely, but there has to be some that want to improve wizard muggle relations. i know i would so wizard would no longer need to hide.

Garfnob

Just checked. Sorry, misremembered it. I´ll adjust my post.

Embran

I know it is even said, that the story is probably just a story to teach kids. Could have been that they are just great at creating artifacts. still, it later gets those attributes that it hides you from pretty much anything, even summoning charms.

Florian Krause

Bahahahaha!! Are unicorns sexist? I love it!

itsanursething

Hi Veggie (and Woozle!!) I had an epiphany while re-reading these chapters…could Hagrid’s love for dangerous magical creatures stem from his half giant background? They’re considered dangerous magical beings, right? So maybe they’re drawn to other fierce creatures because they don’t consider them dangerous or scary. Maybe…🤷🏼‍♀️ I love that you see Harry trying to work out his egg for more than just one night like in the movie. He is TRYING! And yes, he lies to Hermione about how far along he is with it, but he is trying. I really appreciate the end of Ch 24. I know people have their issues with the characters, but this chapter to me really shows the kindness in the hearts of both Hagrid and Dumbledore. Despite their flaws, they really do have wonderful, kind, generous hearts. Finally, I just love the name of the goblin language: Gobledegook. Brilliant! I hope you and Woozle are enjoying your summers! Til next time 😊

itsanursething

I wonder if taking muggle studies is a requirement for a job in the misuse of muggle artefacts office. I can't imagine many muggle borns or half bloods who are very familiar with the muggle world to want to take that class. Also several characters call the job boring so I imagine it would be even more boring for someone who already knows all about muggles and doesn’t see any novelty in the job like Arthur does. If I was suddenly in the magical world I would want to spend all my time immersed in it, not constantly in the regular world.

Sab

I'm unsure what to make of Ron and Hermione ignoring their argument. If they are formal yet nice to each other, it does perhaps indicate that they have learned from what happened the previous year over cat, rat and firebolt.

Josh Z

"Moody claims that his eye can see through the cloak, but perhaps that's a little white lie?" - earlier in the three broomsticks Moody identify who it under the clock. leaning over and whispering "nice clock Harry" "As a deathly hallow, it should hide distortions as well. Considering the peverell brother hid from death itsself." - if you believe the Peverell brother mad the clock. it did not hid him from death. that was just a story to bust the reputation of the clock.

Garfnob

Hagrid left out Harry and Ron's cups of tea. Dumbledore doesn't even need to use Legilimency on Hagrid. He doesn't need to be able to see them to know that they are there. Logic and guesswork tells Dumbledore where they are.

S1lm4r1l

Hi, Veggie! This is my first comment, so I hope you don't mind if I make it in bullet points. ● Poor Hagrid. He is such a gentle giant who just needs a little love and reassurance. I love how the trio and Dumbledore treat him, making sure that he knows he is loved and accepted. ● Is Myrtle a little creep? Maybe. But is she also super funny? Absolutely. She literally hounded the girl that found her body to the point that the ministry had to step in. Not okay but hilarious. 🤣 Also, when she said that no one cared about her even when she was alive, it broke my heart. She just needs a friend, which makes sense, as being one teenage ghost at Hogwarts having to look at the life she could have had if she were still alive must be horrible.

Paulina

Hi Veggie! So many mysteries in these two chapters! Rita Skeeter getting information about Hagrid even though she's banned from the grounds, Bagman's suspicious interest in helping Harry in the tournament, Crouch's appearance on Harry's map... and none of this is in the movie, of course, which, on the other hand, makes it more interesting for you :) I find it a bit disturbing that Moaning Myrtle and the mermaid painting apparently spy on students in the bathroom. That means that there is literally no privacy at Hogwarts if ghosts can enter the bathrooms whenever they want.

Janie

Emma- I figured he's practicing for the task! We know Cedric has figured it out by now, more than likely the other two have also.

Jake M

My headcannon is that Dumbledore knew that Harry and Ron were there by using legillimency on Hagrid, who already knew they were under the cloak.

Alias93

Waaaaiiittt I never thought Viktor may have gone swimming in the lake because of the clue! Or to figure out the clue. Do you think he had the egg on him when he jumped? Or had he already figured out what the clue meant but wanted to get familiar with the lake? Or did he simply just go for a swim 😅

emmainkeri

Where did you get Pansy being sorry for Buckbeak's (supposed) death from? 🤔

emmainkeri

Hi Veggie! The description of the prefects bathroom sounds heavenly! I find it interesting that this scene implies that ghosts can go wherever they want in the world, with Myrtle stalking Olive Hornby and all that. I always just assumed it was standard, you stay where you die, ghost rules. As many have said Rita Skeeter is awful. Seems like she wanted to write something to get Ludo Bagman fired just so she could start an article with “Disgraced Ex-Head of Magical Sports…” Also, what on earth was Aberforth doing to get “prosecuted for practicing inappropriate charms on a goat”?

Sab

the problem with that is no witch or wizard seams to know anything about muggles. i mean Author is the head of the miss use of muggle artifacts office. presumably he is the most qualified and he knows next to nothing about muggle artifacts. apparently in this world muggle born do not know anything about muggles after they enter the wizard world.

Garfnob

Hi Veggie, I have heard alot of mentions over multiple previous bookclubs that it is strange for the magical community to use witches/ wizards/ magic etc. when naming things. For examples Wizards chess or wizard Christmas crackers. To me it makes perfect sense as there are lots of muggle borns, like Hermoine, or half blood witches and wizards who might use both muggle made and magical objects with their non magic siblings or parents. Love these chapters!

Said

I agree, though people probably argue that it is, Hallow vs Hallow and cancelled eachother out.

Florian Krause

There's definitely some inconsistencies there- Dumbledore (according to She Who Must Not Be Named after the series was over) used Homenem Revelio to see Harry and Ron under the cloak in Hagrid's Hut during Chamber of Secrets, when really it shouldn't have worked given the Hallow's description.

Jake M

Ooftypoof, Veggie! It’s a little sad that the movies didn’t really keep ‘frizzy haired Hermoine’ past the first movie, essentially. Hollywood just couldn’t let the female be anything less than perfectly conventionally attractive. It makes a lot more sense for Snape to accuse Harry of stealing from his potion ingredients in the book than it does in the movie. In the movie he seems to just jump to the conclusion that it was Harry for no real reason. You can’t even say it’s because Harry had done it before, because they weren’t caught last time. That being said, Alan Rickman saying “Don’t . . . lie . . . to me” might be the Harry Potter line I quote the most 🤣 I really do wonder why Moody didn’t turn Harry in. Harry doesn’t even consider that that is strange behavior. Snape almost catches him in the lie, and then how would he have explained that he was just helping Harry break the rules for no real reason? Even if Harry gets in trouble, he still *has* to compete in the tournament. Why take the risk when you don’t know what Harry is even doing out of bed? What do you think?

Rita Skeeter isn't one of the most hated characters in the fandom. Not a lot of people talk about her as much compared to certain characters. For me however, she really gets on my nerves (partially because so many journalists in real life act similar to her). She is so fixated on getting attention with her news articles that she is willing to stir up drama with half truths mixed in with blatant lies. She is a very accurate representation of false journalism and how it can ruin people's lives.

Hey Veggie, Finally got enough time to read entire post and respond. Longed for it, but couldn´t. Don´t got loads to tell about these chapters that others before me did. I do want to respond to several remarks last upload you made. Too many for a DM. You wondered if they mentioned brushing your teeth in wizarding world. They actually did. Stan of the Knight Bus said to Harry that for 15 Sickles he could get an additional hot water bottle and a tooth brush in his favorite color. Don´t know where you got the info the dragons being killed. Not in the book or movie. They are subdued by dragon keepers. Six at least needed just to paralyze them. And movie Horntail falling of the bridge didn´t die. Because credits said no dragons harmed in shooting the movie ^^ J.K. Rowling grew up with Dr. Who and Red Dwarf and is a big fan so the ¨Percy as Supreme ruler of the Universe¨ likely is a joke referencing Red Dwarf. You can buy Dobby´s sock designs. Easy to find and not too pricey. They bought it for my little nephew and brother in law for Christmas. $5 and $ 14 a set each. Have a good one, Veggie and if not next time, i will definitely watch and react to the second task chapter!

Hi Veggie! The plot thickens around so many characters! Rita Skeeter's uncanny knowledge of private conversations, Ludo Bagman's suspicious behavior, Barty Crouch's nighttime activities, Severus Snape's left arm, Mad-Eye Moody's comment: "If there's one thing I hate, it's a Death Eater who walked free," etc. So much mysterious stuff going on! All the pureblood families are related somehow or other, and most halfbloods are related to the purebloods too, so pretty much everybody has relatives they're not proud of. I don't know about Hermione, but everybody else in Hagrid's house that day has at least one relative they would hate for Rita Skeeter to write about in connection with them. Hagrid isn't alone in that.

Christina Brock

Hiya Veggie! Every time Aberforth is mentioned I just remember the way you said you wrote it down during your Dealthy Hallows reaction as ABBA 4th. Always makes me laugh! I love how even though both Hagrid and Dumbledore are father figures for Harry, he has very different relationships with them. You see how much more informally they talk to Hagrid as though he is more a friend than a teacher. When Harry speaks to Dumbledore he is more reserved and polite.

Marianne

I’ve just joined but really happy to be able to join now. My questions are: How do you think Rita Skeeter gets her information? And what do you think Barty Crouch was doing in Snape’s office alone?

Regina

Hi Veggie ! The scene on the stairs where the egg falls is one of my all-time favourite scenes. I really like the relationship between Peeves and Filch :) In one of the scenes in the POA film, Harry sees Pettigrew on the map and, following him down the corridor, bumps into Snape. And Remus (DADA teacher) comes to save him from Snape's clutches. Remus borrows the map to examine it. A scene that doesn't exist in the book, if I'm not mistaken? I find the dynamics of this scene quite comparable. The combination of details: seeing a name on the marauder's map, accidentally bumping into Snape in the corridor. And Mad-eye (DADA teacher) who also comes to save him from Snape's clutches and borrows the map to examine it, too.

Book Club G’day Veggie! Glad to be back in the book club! Chapter 24 The Hagrid stuff makes me cry, I feel so bad for him. What do you think Ludo was talking to the goblins about? Harry’s intuition seems to be telling him not to trust Ludo, what do you make of that? And why do you think he’s offering Harry so much help with the Tournament? Chapter 25 As some who loves taking baths, that bathroom sounds amazing. The hallway scenes brings up so many mysteries. Why is Snape acting weird? Why is Barty Crouch searching his office? Why did Moody cover for Harry? One of my favourite things about this book is that it really is a mystery novel, something that movie didn’t quite manage to pull off. Hope you’re well! Love from Australia

Salutations Veggie. I've never commented here before and I can't say much about the books because I read them in my pre-teens and in Bulgarian of all things (go Viktor). I just wanted to say I really liked the reviews that had the Hogwarts Legacy music in the background. I don't know how all that works and you probably have a good reason to not use it, but on the off chance you don't, then it would be cool to have it in the background again sometime. Sorry if you've addressed this already and I missed it.

nismore

That is fair, students can be noisy (Fred and George at times) but I guess at night Flitch wouldn't expect it. Though given this case, the golden egg would be a weird thing to have been stolen.

Kunzite Blossom

As a deathly hallow, it should hide distortions as well. Considering the peverell brother hid from death itsself. But ok, that is sure one way to interpret the Story. Really looking forward to how Veggie will think about it. 😀

Florian Krause

It's only a plot hole if we assume that Moody can actually see Harry. Suppose what Moody sees is some sort of distortion or disturbance? Snape puts 2 and 2 together. Perhaps Moody does the same. He can't see Harry, but he assumes that he's there. He takes the map because Harry waves his hands underneath the cloak disturbing it. Moody claims that his eye can see through the cloak, but perhaps that's a little white lie? He can see invisibility cloaks, but not the people underneath?

S1lm4r1l

Yeah, I think so too.

Florian Krause

It's been theorized that the eye was made specifically to look for the deathly hallow, and that's why it's so powerful, but there's no real indication that this is the case in the story. I wonder when the author came up with the idea of the hallows and that Harry's cloak would be one. Was it the case when she wrote this book? Probably not, and since another invisibility cloak is used in the book, she might not have decided that Harry's one was special at the time.

Alias93

The cloak being a deathly hollow. In the book it is described as something impossible to see through. You can't even remove the cloak from the user with the summoning charm.

Florian Krause

Apparently he was mentioned in the third one. I remember hearing the name somewhere. Must have been in the book version. https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/into-the-pensieve-silvanus-kettleburn

Nessy-Bobs

It wasn't getting them mixed up, for some reason I thought the movie chose to 'introduce' Grubbly-Plank a film early.

S1lm4r1l

Filch finds the students mildly annoying and damn inconsiderate most of the time. But Peeves is a goddamn menace. He hates him. The egg makes a lot of noise and Filch assumes from experience that students sneaking around the castle would try and be quiet.

S1lm4r1l

How so?

S1lm4r1l

well the movies had Myrtle flirting in book 2. this is a call back to that. and face it the movie is basically am awkward teen romance. not as much as the half-blood prince was but it is still there. one of my least favorite movies do to it having little to do wit the book.

Garfnob

I remember I got those two confused when I read the books for the first time as a kid.

Alias93

Hi Veggie! Rita Skeeter at it again. What do you think she meant, when she told Hermione about Ludo Bagman? Also try to remember the staircase scene, I think it holds a plothole for a later book. J.K. does tend to forget some detail in her work xD

Florian Krause

I thought they were, but I've just rewatched the scene and apparently not. Dunno why I thought that.

S1lm4r1l

I find the movie scene with Myrtle odd in general. Ignoring the age of the actress, she’s very flirty compared to how she is in the book to the point where it’s even a little bit creepy - very far from what her character is imo

Andrew K

You're right, thanks! That'll teach me to make notes half asleep 😂

Jake M

Hi Veggie, hope you’re doing great! A lot to talk about in these chapters, I’ll try and keep my points short. - The way Rita Skeeter talks about Hagrid’s mother, it seems named giants and giantesses are known amongst wizards. I wonder how they’re known specifically and why? The giant culture fascinates me in the series. - “Hagrid, If you’re holding out for universal popularity, I’m afraid you’ll be in this cabin for a very long time.” Wonderful advice from Dumbledore that we should all use. - Aberforth’s inappropriate charms on goats - one of the most bizarre details in the whole series. - The second half of the Egg & The Eye Chapter is one of my favourite parts of the book. The mystery, the tension, it’s all brilliant. I wonder what your thoughts are on it, considering nothing close to this is in the movie. Also, the start of Harry’s desire to be an Auror, I’ll discuss more towards the end of the book, because only so much can be said right now. P.S. Money in the Bank will have taken place by the time the Book Club happens - what did you think of the show? Looking forward to seeing more of your new channel. I work in wrestling media so always enjoy seeing opinions, predictions etc. Stay well!

Andrew K

Was Grubbly-Plank's name mentionned in the third movie? I thought it was a reference to professor Kettleburn who was said to have retired for that reason in the book.

Alias93

We now meet Grubly Plank. Her lessons are vastly different from Hagrid, which causes people to really dislike Hagrid. Sure he isn't a great teacher, but you can tell he does really care for the creatures and wants to spread that even if showing dangerous creatures. I love that the trio stand up for him. Filtch believing Peeves stole the egg makes me wonder, does he hate Peeves more then the students to not assume a student is out of bed?

Kunzite Blossom

I think you might have misread/misheard the line about Rita being banned from Hogwarts, it's "she's not supposed to come into school anymore, Hagrid said Dumbledore banned her". I don't think Hagrid would have that authority either.

Alias93

We get more funny moments with Dumbledore that were sorely missed in the movie. And the first mention of Aberforth! What was he doing to that goat? The revelation about Hagrid's parentage, which was reduced to a short and somewhat comedic scene in the movie, takes a much darker turn with Rita's article. You can see why Madame Maxime is so intent on denying her half-giant nature if this is how they are treated in the media. It's nice to know that it isn't just Harry, Ron and Hermione who like Hagrid, and that many former students were ready to support him. It's funny that Harry had to be guilt-tripped into following Cedric's advice, and that he was complaining in his mind about it not being clear enough. But deep down, despite what he tells himself, he still wants the competition to be fair as he asks Bagman if he offered to help Cedric too. Going to the bathroom as a normal student: you might randomly get attacked by a troll, haunted by a ghost or murdered by a basilisk. Going to the bathroom as a prefect: you get a luxurious marble swimming pool, complete with diving board, fluffy towels and many coloured foam bubbles with magical effects. No wonder why Percy liked being a prefect so much... (you might still be haunted by a ghost in the prefects bathroom though).

Alias93

Hi Veggie :) The loyalty to Hagrid from the Trio and Dumbledore is so heartwarming. Movie Hermione would never scream at Hagrid to come outside :)

Sandra

you might want to leave the pea-brains part out. you can get the sentiment across without the insult. also in now-a-days there world be uproar if it was the other way round. right or wrong it would happen.

Garfnob

Grubbly-Plank's lesson was not all that good ether. bringing in a creacher half the class cannot get near. when Hagrid gets a unicorn that is more trusting of males. for my thoughts on Hagrid classes see my post.

Garfnob

These are some of my favorite chapters. I especially loved the part of Harry getting caught in the trick step on the staircase. I love the suspense you feel when reading this scene and would have loved to see it in the movie. What are your thoughts on Moody being able to see through the invisibility cloak?

Helen

Greetings, Chapter – 24 -(from the wiki) -That hair potion is how Harry’s family made much of their gold. Harry’s grandfather invented it. the irony. -what did you think the explanation for hagrid’s size was? -I think learning about “monsters” is more practical. If you encounter a monster for the first time without supervision it could go bad. If you come across a unicorn in the wild it will just leave. Chapter – 25 -at least he got almost 2 month to work on the clue after hearing it unlike in the move. Will it make a difference?

Garfnob

I love Hagrid but I really have to agree with Parvati: He really should have remained gamekeeper only. Grubbly-Plank's lesson really highlights that teaching isn't his forte😕😅 On a lighter note: Hermione calling Rita an "excuse for a human being" was a great insult😅

Diego Zenhäusern

happy "two books came out around this time 20 years or so ago" to all of you! I love the Skeeter story in the books - although... I found it sort of obvious XD No more on that for now! So... Veggie, how do you think she found out about Hagrid and maximes date talk? Also chapter 25... Maraudes Map making an appearance again. What do you think is one Batremius Crouch doing in Snapes office? When (in the Yule Ball chapter) he was not feeling well and seems to ave send Percy on his behalf? Also chapter 25... Pyjama Party... That would be so cool! Although... a nightskirt... so unstylish - or old fashined. At least - unlike in the films Snape seems to sleep. Isn't Snape clever? Seeing the egg AND the map and he connects all the dots correctly. Also... Waht do you make of Moody s ope to catch Snape alone in a dark spot? I still think Snaoe would be able to hold his own against Moody. Hope you and Woozle are well!

Dara Jeeling

Hi Veggie Please don't apologise for being "late". It gives us an excuse to read or listen to the relevant chapters again 😁 Draco referred to Hagrid as "Elephant Man" after reading Rita's news article. Would that be a general insult, or could a pure blood have actually known about him/John Merrick? I like the fact John Hurt played both him and Olivander. A lot of people online go on about Moaning Myrtyle flirting with a boy Harry's age, not realising she is the same age now as when she died. They can't get their tiny little pea-sized brains around that, just because the actress playing her in the film is quite a lot older, saying there would be uproar if it was the other way round with an older man doing that to a girl. Almost the same with Alan Rickman playing Snape, agewise. THEY ARE ACTORS!!! I'm 52 but have the luck to look like a teenager lol. If I was an actor, I'd get away with playing younger roles. When are you re-opening your PO Box? I got you a book and a couple of things.

Nessy-Bobs

S'mae Veggie, Crafrangfran yma! (Ravenclaw here) Chapter 24 Krum is going for a swim...I wonder why that might be 🤔 The image of Dumbledore twiddling his thumbs, looking at the ceiling and saying "I have gone temporarily deaf" lives in my head rent-free (to quote the inestimable Veggie Gamer) as one of my favourite moments- his sarcasm in that scene is on point. I would have loved to see it in the movie, although I think Harris' Dumbledore might have been better suited to it, given Gambon needed a Snickers in this film. I wonder why they cut out the half giant plotline? Chapter 25 - "Harry takes a bath". Not quite as magical a title, is it? XD The author definitely didn't skip her English GCSE lesson about foreshadowing - we were reminded about the trick staircase earlier in the book, in a seemingly throwaway moment with Neville. That's one of the things I love about these books- you never know what small details might pop up again later- just like Vernon's old socks!

Jake M

I love Chapter 25. Harry being curious and reckless, Filch trying to get Peeves chucked out, Snape being angry and suspicious, Moody being insightful and bad-tempered. It is so typical of Snape to jump to Harry but its not a massive leap. None of the other 3 eggs are likely to be wandering the Castle at night. Harry complains that Cedric doesn't tell him about the 2nd task explicitly. But Cedric gives him all the tools he needs to work it out himself. He tells Harry to use the Prefect's bathroom. The only decoration is the painting of the Mermaid. Did you like Grubbly-Plank? How did Rita find out about Hagrid? Why are the Goblins after Barty Crouch? Is Barty Crouch ill or not? What's Ludo's big secret? Why hasn't Rita already written a story about it? Are Unicorns sexist? :P

S1lm4r1l

Hi Veggie! CHAPTER 24: -As annoying as Rita Skeeter is, I agree with her that Dumbledore HAS made some questionable appointments, Hagrid being one of them. He is not a great teacher which Grubbly-Plank's lessons show. -I LOVE Dumbledore defending Hagrid! He knows exactly how to comfort him. He mentions his own experience with handling criticism and REFUSES to accept Hagrid's resignation. He even brings some levity to the situation with funny lines that probably help Hagrid, specifically the "temporarily deaf" line and the line about Aberforth. I'm assuming Aberfort CAN read, it's just a joke😁 CHAPTER 25: -This is one of my favorite chapters in the entire series mainly beause of the second half! You really fear that Harry might get caught at any point! It also raises so many questions: Why's Crouch in Snape's office? Isn't he supposed to be sick? What's going on between Moody and Snape? The writing/dialogue is very intriguing between Moody-Snape and Moody-Harry. It's full of great subtext that unfortunately can't be discussed further now... We've talked about this movie excluding a lot of the mystery from the book. This scene is a prime example. I really wish it was in there.

Me Here

The Bagman storyline was not in the movies, so I would love to hear what you think of him so far? And where you think his story is going?
