[CLOSED] The Harry Potter Book Club! - Your Notes for Chapters 6 & 7 of The Goblet of Fire!

THIS PART OF THE BOOK CLUB IS NOW COMPLETE!  See you next time! :)

PLEASE NOTE! - Hi guys, just want to ask, please do try and keep your comments to an ok length! I know you want to cover everything, but keeping them shorter / to the point gives me more time to respond to them! :)

Here is a chance to get your comment read out in the next Book review video!

If you are reading along with the reviews, we are covering chapters "The Portkey" & "Bagman And Crouch"! So if you have any thoughts, opinions, comparisons or questions regarding these, please leave a comment below!

I do have to ask, try to keep them fairly short, like 4 or 5 sentences.  That way I can cover more when making the video.  Also try to keep them on subject and not referencing anything that we are yet to cover. Ideally, keep it to 1 comment each if you can (if you have more to say after commenting, you can edit it and add to it! :) ).  These are just rough guidelines rather than rules, I want to be able to fit in as many of you as possible! :)

NEW FEATURE!! - As some of you may want to make a comment, but not have it replied to by others, you can now Message me your thoughts on the chapters by DM'ing me on here.  If you do, please follow all the above rules, especially avoiding mentioning things in future chapters or books!  Oh and please start your DM message with "Book Club -"!

To anyone that does reply to comments below, please make sure you are being friendly and respectful!  A lot of tone and meaning can be lost in text, after all!  If you disagree with someone on something, keep it polite and remember the golden rule in life - Sometimes you have to just agree to disagree! :)

Thanks, guys!! :)

You sort of gotthe clockwork in my head turning, thinking about "my tent" but then I guess it would be much like the tiny house my hubby and I decided to start building just for the two of us - once the kids are all independend.

Hi Veggie! :) I always assumed Weatherby was a nickname since Mr. Crouch uses the name twice while in the presence of Mr. Weasley, someone he clearly knows. I like that wizards are just humans and are as bad or worse than muggles when it comes to social/political things etc. Them being terrible at dressing like muggles is what I imagine I would look like if I tried to act like someone from a culture that I had seen people from but not interacted a lot with. Most wizards don't really interact with muggles.

Hairy Pothead

"Whenever you are near me (near me) I'm nurmy murmy (nurmy murmy) Murmy nurmy (nurmy murmy) Whenever you're in town (in town) My trousers they go brown, girl" Since you preempted the last quote I'd have a redo for the last club. Not much to say on these chapters, as I mentioned in earlier posts you finally get to meet probably the only character that Brian blessed could play in the form of ludo bagman, he's not exactly what I'd imagine but personality wise going forward you'll see, obviously he'd need to be deaged slightly. The portkey scene is much better in the book, I always think the walking on air bit in the film looks so daft. Also thought I'd finally add a profile pic of one of my infant pets since I know how much you adore cuddly furry animals

Hey Veggie! Quick side note: one of my favorite things is hearing you say "Hi Veggie!" so many times during the book clubs :) Splinching: Harry imagining splincehd eyeballs makes me giggle every time, it's a bit morbid but I just picture two lonely eyeballs blinking on the pavement. Defending Percy: I think apparating downstairs every morning is a good idea, especially when you've only just passed your apparition test and the skill is new. Apparition is tricky as we've just learned. It's like driving a car, you gotta keep driving right after passing your test so you become confident in your skills. Defending Weatherby: I have an alternate theory! What if Percy introduced himself to Mr. Crouch as Weatherby to separate himself from the Weasley name and his father? Maybe he doesn't wanna get associated with him at work. People do like Arthur but his department isn't necessarily well respected or admired by everyone. Cedric and Amos: Reading chapter six got me thinking, what were the reasons behind Cedric's decision to enter the tournament? Did he do it purely for himself or did he feel like it was expected of him? In the chapter, Amos didn't listen to what Cedric had to say but instead went with his own perception of what had happened during that Quidditch match. He's allowed to be proud of his son, I just hope it's not negatively affecting Cedric's image of himself as a person. Lastly, what would your magical tent look (or smell) like? A bird bath in the front yard and a big fluffy bed inside for Woozle? :)

emmainkeri

What is the book 5 item, extendable ears?

emmainkeri

Right so Amos diggory annoys me here no one understands Harry's past or pain but some at least try to. I love mrs weasley she's the mother I aspire to be but I feel like she doesn't know Fred and George at all or chooses to ignore who they really are maybe not intentionally though. Speaking of Fred and George I love the bet they make with bagman with adding in the fake wand and bagman's response to it I'd have loved to have seen those wands in the film and my word I really enjoyed ludo bagmans character especially in this chapter haha. Arthur playing with the matches had me giggling 🤣 loved the appearance of hogwarts students even Oliver Wood. I must say the conversation the trio overheard with archie while waiting to get water the first time I read this (I was about 9/10 it was about a year before the first film came out that I discovered harry potter) I burst out laughing so hard I have no idea what my parents must have thought at the time lol and it still makes me laugh now especially with Stephen frys audiobook the voices he puts on for the wizards haha 😄 I feel a bit sorry nowadays for percy tho imagine your boss not remembering your name? As a kid reading the books I found it funny but as an adult I see how it must be hard for him as percy is very ambitious and works extremely hard it just seems mr crouch doesn't respect his professional inferiors which is probably all percy wanted as he idolises him. Anyway loving your reactions and reviews I listen to the audiobooks on audible now as I don't have time to read anymore plus I can listen to them while I'm working I do miss being able to read them tho lol just too busy atm lol look forward to future chapters I hope my comment isn't too long it's just been a little while since I've been able to comment haha

Liz

Hi veggie Everyone has already said everything I would like to say about theses chapters so I will just say this. Thank you for doing the book reviews, we love them a lot. What is your ranking of the movies right now? After you finished the books you should re-rank the movies and see if it changed at all. Much love from Virginia

Collin Anderson

Hi Veggie! First time commenter here. These are such fun chapters filled with interesting characters, specially Archie in his nightgown! Seeing another setting outside of Hogwarts gives a whole new vibe to the Wizarding World which sadly was not fully captured by the movie seeing as they cut 99.9 percent of these chapters.Looking forward to the next ones! The craziness have just barely begun 🙂

Maddie

The thing I like most about reading the books is all of the small little bits of world building that you just don’t get in the movies because of the time. For example, having to pass a test to apparate, all the portkey information etc. However the big thing I wanted to mention is the ethics behind constantly having to obliviate Mr Rogers, surely they could just get a wizard in charge or go somewhere else because this situation does not seem practical.

Millie

Hi, Veggie! I wonder if Molly doesn't enjoy quidditch or if staying home is one of those countless quiet sacrifices moms make for the sake of their kids. Maybe there just weren't enough tickets?

Yankee Veg

Hi Grace. Nice comment. Feel free to ignore this since it's not really an "H problem", but maybe a few line changes (don't know what the best term for it in English is, but I mean like what I did after writing "nice comment") would make it a bit easier to read for Veggie since he's dyslexic? It's a bit messy when it's not used, and more difficult for him to find out where he was if he stops to discuss something you wrote. I love the Percy/Mr. Crouch relationship so much! I like your description of it. One of my favourite parts of this book.

H

Hey Veggie! I'm so excited to finally join the book club! Thank you for making such a wonderful space to relive the magic of these books! Chapter 6 & 7 are so imerssive! It's amazing to see magic used in the everyday activities of witches and wizards instead of the school setting. Which is something I really enjoyed about Fantastic Beasts. I find it strange that Ludo and only Ludo can send someone out looking for Bertha. Wouldn't her family be worried and notify the authorities? Why can't Mr. Crouch send someone? I'm so sad we didn't see Archie in the movies!!

Carmen

I don't think there was a later portkey, not from their neighborhood anyway! It's like a bus they had to catch, and there was only one bus 😅

emmainkeri

Good point for Hermione's parents, we would have seen some pretty funny scenes & Definitely omnioculars for me!

Mel

Amazing image- I weirdly always get Calvin from Calvin And Hobbes when I read him

Sandra

Hi Veggie! I love all the tidbits we learn in these two chapters. A few notes and thoughts: Chapter 6 -You'd think Arthur would have a better idea of how to dress incognito since he's met Hermione's parents and seen how they dress. Speaking of Hermione's parents, I wonder why the Weasley's (Arthur especially) never made an effort to befriend them. I'd imagine her parents are much more friendly and receptive than the Dursleys lol -Heartbreaking to hear Amos talk about Cedric's future grandchildren. -Love the mention of the Lovegoods. Just goes to show just how much intricate planning went into this series. Chapter 7 -Poor Mr. Roberts. I understand why he needed to have his memory modified, but I feel like there has to be a better solution. -Loved Harry's amazement at seeing everything and taking in the size and diversity of the wizarding community. The buildup to the game is so exciting to read/hear about. Really wish they had included more of it in the movie. Not sure if anyone else has brought this up, but they were actually considering splitting the Goblet of Fire into two movies. If you could buy one of the pieces of merchandise mentioned at the World Cup, which would you choose?

Sam-I-Am

These are my favorite chapters. In the whole series. They are not really action packed, but they are like your favorite episode from a sitcom you watched countless times. If you were in charge of the new HBO series, who would you cast as Ludo? I never really had an image in my head while reading but maybe Peter Crouch with a fat suit?

Jonas (Methanoutput)

Hi Veggie! I just have a few little thoughts today. First, am I the only person who thinks of apparating as the wizard equivalent to driving? And again, I must say how I'm not really liking Molly right now. I dislike how she shamed the twins about both their grades and inventions. We meet Cedric! Mr. Diggory seems to agree with you that hufflepuff beating gryffindor was awesome. I also couldn't help but wonder, are wizards really so isolated that they have no clue what muggles wear? I know there are some wizard only villages like Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, but there can't be that many. We meet Mr. Bagman! How do you feel about his work ethic? Mr. Crouch being Percy's idol is so funny to me, Percy worships the ground he walks on and Mr. Crouch is very indifferent to him lol. Lastly, we are so close to the quidditch cup! I can't wait to discuss it. Have a very happy birthday this friday!

Grace S

I apologize in advance for chunkiness... Mrs. Weasley mentioned you must be of age and have passed a test to apparate. 17 is considered of age in the wizarding world. I know you had been curious about that in the last book club. So even if someone turns 17 before their 7th year begins, they are legally considered adults. On that note, you had wondered about Hermione doing magic in Diagon Alley to fix Harry’s glasses. To my knowledge (and please anyone in the book club correct me if I’m wrong) in areas where there are a lot of adult wizards, like Diagon Alley, underage magic is harder to pinpoint and recognize. And there’s less of a chance that muggles will see. So it’s not as strictly enforced. Speaking of muggles, did I read that correctly?? Galleons are the size of hubcaps?? How do you carry those around?? Onto your favorite character Veggie! Oh Percy. Such a little brown noser. Haha! He’s rather annoying and full of himself isn’t he? I can see why the twins mess with him. And to me, it never came across as bullying, just typical sibling behavior. Granted, I don’t have any siblings, but I’ve heard plenty of stories about siblings absolutely TORMENTING each other. Finally, a fun fact! Percy and I share a birthday! I know your birthday is coming up this month…maybe you share with a character too :) Have a wonderful birthday month Veggie! Treat yourself to a day of only Woozle snuggles!

itsanursething

I hope you're doing ok after your surgeries!! Rest up and heal fast :)

itsanursething

These chapters are so fun! I really enjoy the descriptions of all the different tents and the wizards from all over the world; seeing wizards and witches as young children is fun too! The magical souvenirs are also great. We learn so much about the wizarding world in these few chapters. The best part is getting to see witches and wizards act like muggles; it's so entertaining. Although, I am surprised they're allowing any muggles to work at the camp site at all. It feels a bit unethical to have them there if they need to erase their memories constantly. I'm glad you finally get to meet Ludo Bagman! I think it was a big mistake to leave him out of the movies. The mention of flying carpets is also interesting! I think riding a carpet would be a lot more comfortable than riding a broom.

Maria

I really like how in The Portkey we actually see some tension in the Weasley household. Fred and George having an argument with their mother just before leaving shows that even the perfect families aren't perfect. The movies display them always being happy together but the books show more of what a real family is like, just like how Harry in the movies is a baby face but Harry in the books is a real teenage boy. Special shout out to YaeliEz in hoping her and her family stay safe.

Raider Max

Her reaction would be reasonable if she didn't have a future planned for them, including a ministry job in her fantasy. One should NEVER have any sort of plan for a child's life in this manner especially not career-wise, that's not the job of a parent. But, I also get she is fed up.

Jo Winters

The even funnier thing about Crouch not realizing that Percy and Arthur are related is that the way they're described in the text makes it sound like Percy is a carbon copy of his father (tall, lanky, freckles, horn-rimmed glasses), except obviously about 30 years younger.

Sara

Hi Veggie! I really like the detail that there are two tents, and that the trio met some of their friends from school (and Oliver Wood is there too, yay!). Also, I'm wondering why is Ludo's nose broken? Why is it still not re-set and not healed? He's a wizard, and if he got it while playing Quidditch, the healers should've dealt with it, no? Unless Ludo didn't want it to be healed to look more rugged? Last thing from me - as a person with family in Bulgaria (my grandfather is Bulgarian and we visit him and my grandmother every summer), I really love that there is Bulgarian representation in a very famous fantasy series! A few years ago when visiting my grandparents, we watched TV and there was an interview with the actor who played Viktor Krum, and he talked about his experience on set and stuff (fun fact: he actually went to school with Dudley's actor, when he lived in UK for a couple of years). Very interesting!

Gothic Llama

Good point about the foreign languages. Considering they have quills that correct spelling mistakes, quills that make spelling mistakes on purpose and quills that just make stuff up, you would imagine they would have quills that directly translate what your interlocutor is saying...

Alias93

Isn't it interesting that wizards apparently can't use magic to help them with foreign languages? In fanfiction they commonly use translation spells, but those don't seem to be a thing in the canon books. If you want to speak with a foreigner who doesn’t speak your language, either learn their language or you have to rely on an interpreter, exactly like us muggles. Now to old Archie. One thing the movies got completely wrong is wizard clothing. In the books wizards don't wear pants (=trousers). They wear robes. Even the school uniforms are completely inaccurate. In the books the school uniform is just a plain black robe, nothing more. No skirts and trousers, no shirts, no sweater vests - those were all added by the filmmakers. So old Archie isn't that eccentric as he might look to a muggle eye. Not in the wizarding world. Wearing a robe (basically a dress) is completely normal for a man in his culture. (EDIT: By "normal" I mean "common" or "unremarkable".)

Hawwah

Harry is not narrating the story, but it's narrated from his point of view, not from the point of view of an omniscient narrator. (With a few exceptions, like the first chapter.)

Hawwah

Hi Veggie! First time commenting, but wanted to say how much I enjoy your open and kind personality. Regarding Bagman and Crouch, Ludo Bagman always reminded me of Gilderoy Lockhart with the exception that Bagman actually did what he is known for: played quidditch. However, we can see that he is in a position of authority that he is not suited for and doesn't take seriously. I know you loved Lockhart, so I'm looking forward to seeing your thoughts on Bagman. As for Mr. Crouch not remembering Percy's name, calling him Weatherby when he knows Arthur, says a lot about him. He clearly doesn't like Bagman but is respectful because Ludo is a department head. I think it's the same with Arthur who he sees as a peer, but Percy is his assistant and is "beneath" Crouch. That's how I always read that scene. Crouch doesn't know Percy's name because he doesn't see him as important, and it made me instantly dislike Crouch. It's expected to treat your social or professional equals with respect, but a person's true character is how they treat those who are lower in station. Percy can be a bit much, but he deserves to have his boss know his name, especially when he works so hard for Crouch.

Melanie LeBlanc

You're not the only one Mel, I actually can't stand Amos Diggory. His boasting about Cedric is annoying.

Janie

Hi Veggie! I love these two chapters. It's the so called calm before the storm before it all begins. I never understood why the Weasleys had to be up so early. Why didn't they take a later Portkey? Especially since Percy, Bill and Charlie arrived around noon, it wasn't necessary to be there at 5 in the morning. But on the other hand, they had enough time for the "camp tour" and met poor old Archie, so I can't really complain :) Why do you think Mr. Crouch calls Percy by a different name? He knows Arthur and I doubt he gets his name wrong, so it should be easier for him to remember Percy's name. And we finally meet Ludo Bagman. An interesting character for sure but I'm not too disappointed he wasn't in the movie.

Janie

Hey :) don’t we only hear Bode dies in OOTP? He's still in St Mungo's there

Sandra

VEGGIE! World-building beyond the walls of Hogwarts!!! Plenty of tiny but important details, so make sure you go through the chapters VERY closely! - Apparition tests and splinching weren't explained in the movies. Love that it's difficult, otherwise the alternative transportation wouldn't make sense. - Portkeys may not just be time-activated, but also touch-activated. This isn't explicitly said, but it has to be the case for the Triwizard Cup to work later. - Cedric is brilliant representation for us Hufflepuffs. He's the only one that matches Harry in terms of being fair to your opponents. - We know how badly memory charms can damage your mind. Mr. Roberts is basically getting abused. - I don't know if Rowling really followed English football, but I do. England fans would NOT be supporting Ireland just because of some weird Great Britain solidarity. In fact, the sentiments would be quite opposite. - A lot of people tried to make out that Cho Chang is a racist name. It's a Chinese name for a presumably Chinese descent person, get over it. - What did you think of the different Ministry departments? Interesting that this is the first mention of Unspeakables from the Department of Mysteries. - Betting all of their money on sports. This is why kids are barred from gambling. It's supposed to be for fun. It's ok if you can't respond extensively to such a long comment. I just want YOU to not miss the small details, so that you can have the best possible experience.

Neellohit Basu

Hi veggie! In regards to your last book review, Charlie was mentioned in the first movie by Ron and then is in the picture of the Weasley family in the Daily Profit from when they visited Egypt. Now for these chapters you will really see how different the movies really are. It’s nice to learn more about apparateing in the books. As for characters you meet, I find Amos Diggory unlikeable but knowing Cedric dies I do feel sorry for him. Now for Ludo Bagmen, he is an interesting character and I find him pretty funny. For some reason I picture his face similar to the actor who plays Amos in the movies just with blonde hair.

Karen

Hi Veggie :) I know it's been mentioned before, but I'm still amazed at the gulf between Muggles and wizards. Even though it's a non-mandatory subject, the Muggle world isn't a total mystery. It's a mixed world, and there are half-bloods! The fact that Arthur, despite his passion, is completely lost... with coins, clothes, matches... always surprises me. The others are simply ignorant on the subject because they don't care, but Arthur, it's his passion, his work and therefore his studies. It makes me wonder about his ability to learn (even if I imagine JKR made him a bit "stupid" on the subject for the sake of humor in the story) but it also makes me wonder about how little credit the Ministry of Magic gives to the Muggle subject for employing unqualified people. That said, it's still very funny in the story and I love it. Also, sorry, but 10 times a forgetting spell on that poor Muggle? What I love about this chapter, and what I wish I'd seen in the films, is all the World Cup merchandising. Omnioculars, dancing shamrock hat, small figure of Viktor Krum. I can't wait for you to read/listen the game (yes, I'm teasing). Am I the only one (despite his loss and being sad for him) who isn't an Amos fan? Nothing wrong with being proud of your child, but I don't like the character's vibe. Love from France x

Mel

Hi Veggie Just a few of my thoughts from these chapters Chapter 6 • Interesting that they have to be incognito to go to World Cup • So Apparition is like driving, you can’t do it if you don’t have a licence • Small mention of the Lovegoods Chapter 7 • Loved hearing about all the different tents and people on the walk to the water tap • Enjoyed hearing about the different Ministry members • A bit silly for Fred & George to put all their savings on the bet

Connor Wilkinson

It’s really fun to see the wizards have to act like muggles. My question is, why? It seems like there must be an easier method to doing this than erasing a muggle’s memory every so often and getting the wizards to act like muggles (when they are not doing a very good job). Seems like a Fidelius Charm (like what kept the Potters in hiding) would work better, although maybe there are too many people here to use that. As a kid, I was obsessed with the tent that was bigger on the inside. I wrote a “book” when I was 8 that was basically a HP fan fiction in which the main character lived in a tent that was really a mansion. Also, as a side note, I have a set of omnnioculars bought from the Wizarding World in Florida. They look cool, but when you look through them, you just click through a slideshow of different pictures from the movies. I was always disappointed that they didn’t just function as binoculars. After all, another Weasley device I bought (from book 5) does actually work for its real purpose.

Darcy

Hello! Thought I would join now we are getting into the 4th book. This is where the s*** really starts hitting the fan. A born insomniac, I used the first 4 audiobooks as a sleep aid for years until the 5th book came out, so by the time the first movie came out I had listened to the Jim Dale audiobooks at least 100 times each. I practically have them memorized. Therefore the movies are a no-go for me. I have seen each once, but I am so married to the books that there is no hope for me enjoying the movies at all. All of the characters are so different, and many don't even exist. Poor Ron. Anyway, These first chapters of Goblet of Fire are great. They really show off the eccentricities of the wizarding world. I have noticed that you make many references to this story being told by Harry. The story is not told by Harry. The story is told in the 3rd person limited, where the narrator is not the main character but has access to the main character's thoughts. You will notice the narrator does not use words like I and We. The things that happen are actually happening, but we are just also aware of how Harry perceives them. For example, when the book says that Harry thought Snape wanted to kill him, (paraphrasing) we can assume that Snape was giving Harry a dirty look, but we can't know what Snape was thinking. However, if it says that Snape said something specific, He actually said that because Harry is not telling the story.

Lia T

Hi Veggie 😁 It’s my understanding that Harry Potter was written to be a ‘hidden world’ style story, meaning that all of this *could* be happening in our world. So you should be able to assume that muggle history and politics played out the same way as ours, at least from the perspective of the muggles. Like, historical figures may have been witches or wizards, but the muggle history books would be identical to ours. Someone who knows the lore better than me can correct me if I’m wrong about that. I’ve always assumed that Molly didn’t really understand how serious Fred and George were about Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. They have always been practical jokers, and making trick candies and wands is just the kind of thing they would do for fun. Also, I’m sure that their creations frequently made her life a lot more difficult. I don’t really blame her for not recognizing that these 16 year olds were actually planning to make pranks their life’s work. It’s hard to be impressed by a piece of prank magic that you’ve just fallen victim to, even if it is impressive and someone who was less frazzled and overwhelmed might have been able to see that.

Ashley Evers

Hi Veggie! (in a southern accent) Others have mentioned that it is a bit strange that Crouch get's Percy's name wrong, especially because he clearly knows Arthur's name. Perhaps it didn't quite click with him that Percy is Arthur's son (even though they are in the same tent!) For some reason when I first read the books I didn't understand that "Wetherby" was a mistake based on the name "Weasley". I thought this was just Mr Crouch's "work nickname" for him. As if "Wetherby" means "secretary" or something. It doesn't make much sense, but that's what my child-brain thought!

Garry (Not Jerry)

Hey Veggie! Chapter 6: I know a lot of folks often think Molly was unreasonable with Fred and George in this chapter. As a parent, I can only imagine how trying it would be to have not just 1 child who is ALWAYS mischievous but 2 who work in concert to defy your rules and, let's be honest, cause havoc and chaos whenever they can. I can't imagine many parents who wouldn't be fed up and truly concerned about their children's future when faced with their repeated actions. The twins do cause trouble at school, home and at large. Some of their inventions are questionable and while they are good for a laugh, I find Molly's reaction to be realistic and reasonable. Chapter 7: For me this chapter was the first real glimpse into the wizarding world at large rather than small pockets of very specific instances. It is so charming and full of the wonder that is often a part of Harry's reaction to the things that are all still so very new to him even 4 years after learning he's a wizard. I am excited to get into the characters and storylines that were so sadly left out of the movies. Here is where the stories become much richer, fuller and make so much more sense than the movies ever managed to convey. There are definitely morally questionable actions taken by the wizards towards muggles here and I think they are obvious.

Monique

The Trace does get explained more fully in a later book and whilst Veggie has definitely questioned it, doesn't necessarily mean we should explain it yet.

S1lm4r1l

*edited to avoid spoilers* Hey Veggie! It seems to me, that you were confused about 2 points in the last video. So I'd like to bring them up real quick, if I may. 1. Underage magic use: When I read the books the first time, I also wondered how the twins pulled this off (and yes, they are still underage wizards!) The mechanics get explained further in later books, so I won’t go into too much detail, but limit myself to point out what we already know. In CoS Harry got a warning letter from the ministry when Dobby did magic in the house. That implies that they can tell when magic is being done in vicinity of a minor. But they don’t seem to be able to tell who did the magic.
Now the Burrow is the house of a magical family. Mr and Mrs Weasley do magic all the time (and now Percy, too) So, if you think about it, it’s absolutely plausible that the twins manufactured their products in their room. 2. Pigwidgeon: Thankfully Jonas already told you what the meaning of Pigwideon is. I yelled at my TV for hours that it has nothing to do with pigeons... I just wanted to add that it is one of my favourite words of the early 19 hundreds. It's best use, imo, is in the book "more trivia" by Logan Pearsall Smith: "Is there anything in my head but cotton-wool? What am I anyhow? A noodle, a pigwidgeon, a ninnyhammer." The victorians and edwardians were absolutely bonkers - I freaking love them! As for these chapters, I can just reiterate that my favorite parts of the books are not when the main story happens, but when we experience the day-to-day. Granted, the world cup finale isn't your typical day. But the attempt of muggle assimilation, the toy broomstick, the kid playing with daddys wand, the exasperated ministry workers - it just paints such a lively word-picture in our minds!

PumpkinSparks

Crouch is elderly and has been in the Ministry for a long time, Percy's only been there a few months at most. Crouch could be calling him Weatherby intentionally him, given it is obvious that Percy loves him.

S1lm4r1l

Hey Veggie, I’m so excited that you’re finally on my second favorite book in the series, the Goblet of Fire! I’ve had two major surgeries in the past six weeks and your book reviews have been so great to help me destress and relax a bit during my time in the hospital. In these chapters you finally start getting to know Ludo Bagman, who was completely absent from the movies, and Crouch who you’ll learn much more about than you did from the movies. Get ready for even more new characters in the chapters that follow! I do wonder in these chapters why they didn’t just confined Mr. Roberts into thinking he had the week or so off and replace him with a wizard or witch at the campground, as it seems like having your memory modified over and over again could be really harmful to someone’s brain. Can’t wait to see what you think of all of the quidditch World Cup details which were left out of the movie!

Emory

Oh yes I plan on ranting on a scene in each of the next two chapters lol .

Annamarie schwirian

1rst a short note- I know Mark Williams best as Brian Williams rorys father in Doctor Who and secondly for his hilarious role as a billy Goat turned human in the movie stardust. I always forget he played Arthur weasley. Chapter 6- I find portkeys interesting because it's a rare time that wizards do seem to understand muggle nature. So here's my question if you did pick up a random portkey where would you hope it transported you. Chapter 7 - I wonder how you feel about how the wizards treat the Muggle campsite director. It honestly was the first sign to me that the books and Wizarding world was headed down a dark path. I personally feel the ministry is not as far Removed from the views of the purebloods where muggles are concerned if there willing to mess with their brains so easily for a sporting event.

Hey Veggie! First time commenting )) Been watching for over a year, here and on YouTube. Thank you for great videos and the community! “Goblet” is my favourite book in the series. And it was the very first book I ever read in English, at 14 y.o. (I’m Russian, so English is not my native language. Sorry if I make mistakes, by the way) About the chapters. God, the man in women’s nightgown… Makes me laugh every time a read the book :) I feel so sorry for Fred and George, when Molly destroys their inventions. They worked so hard for it! Not only does she support them, but she takes away the results of months of work. I would be devastated. I can imagine what they might be feeling. My mother could not take it when I started to work as a make up artist. She thought it was not serious enough. She even lied to the family so they would not know :( But now that I became successful, she proudly says to everybody that her daughter has her own makeup school and is a business woman. I wish parents could support their children when they most need it. At least, not be ashamed of them or get in their way…

Hello! How are you keeping? I hope you are well and enjoying autumn. I'll write in points to try and stay brief. 1. Charlie appearing right on top of some poor old dear... In my mind, as a kid, I imagined an old lady in a bonnet and him appearing sitting cross-legged atop her head. Cannot erase that mental image to this day. 2. I relate to Mr Weasly's confusion with money. I remember when I moved to the UK as a teen and was also nervous about giving the wrong number of coins. 3. Galeons are the size of HUBCAPS?! 4. Mr. Weasley would do really well at some convention of wizards larping as muggles. 5. I really think that the camp is beyond cool and it would have been amazing to see the variety on the screen. 6. The fake wand is here again, and Ludo calls it 'convincing', I think maybe the trick is that the twins bewitched the wand to feel like a real one, to have the same 'energy' which will fool a wizard. Hence why it's well done. 7. I'm slightly confused about how Mr Crouch is so familiar with Mr Weasley but calls Percy 'Weatherby' unless that's the name of his previous assistant.

Jo Winters

The suggestion of time travel kind of reveals that their bet is successful and what the result of the match is, maybe it would be best to keep it for the next book club?

Alias93

maybe the twins already had to invest to create their products. Potion ingredients tend to be expensive and the Ton tongue tiefe sounds like swelling solution (sort of). So maybe a lot of their savings went into those confiscated sweets

Dara Jeeling

So know what you mean... Hope I can control myself at the studio Tour

Dara Jeeling

wonder why ancient greek, though... had to get two Semesters if ancient greek in during University (don't ask - catholic religion for pre school) and when I tired using it in Greece... Stuck to english afterwards

Dara Jeeling

Hi, short thoughts Chapter 6 - I love how Cedric is immediatly shown to be humble and honest ( I think him laughing at the badges in the film sort of took away from what a decent chap he is). So telling his father literally to shut it... Great! Chapter 7 - me being me... I LOVE how we get to see small witches and wizards do what children do. Swell a slug - fly on play brooms... I always thought it's sort of sad we do not get a lot about wizarding childhood. I mean... Are all those kids who have a magical parent being home schooled? Are there wizarding Kindergartens/Pre schools? Also... The twins bet... It's such an unlikely bet... By now we know getting the snitch will win 150 points so the twins seem to be sure sure that the Irish chasers must be a heck of a bunch better then the whole Bulgarian team... Thank you for your effort!

Dara Jeeling

Hi Veggie! Now we would need a combo rant from Amos and you praising Cedrics Quidditch skills, while tearing down Gryffindor. xD What do you think about the ministry using muggles to sell camping spots, knowing they have to rearrange their memory constantly, due to wizarding folk being unable to hide themselves. Morally kind of problematic, in my opinion. Also how bad do you feel for Weatherby?

Florian Krause

i do not think we know you cannot Apparating in Hogwarts yet. might want to leave tat but off. and there is a range limit on Apparating. not found out until the last book. bikes and scooters are not the same one is powered and one is not. scooters and motorcycle are close.

Garfnob

Greetings. Chapter – 6 -some muggles pick up litter. Muggles studies should be a mandatory class. -portkeys sound an unpleasant way to travel. Well most travel in the wizard world sounds unpleasant now that I think about it. A “road trip” on a broomstick? Chapter – 7 -I would have taken the gold coins. does that make me a bad person? -Just let the muggles know what is going on and wipe his memory once at the end. Better than 10 times a day for weeks. I would expect there are long term effects of that much mucking in someone’s mind. -get Archie a kilt. -I would love to know what odds Fred and Gorge got. -What are Fred and Gorge spending all there gold on? 37 galleons and change was their life savings, but Ron would have had the 10 galleons in one summer’s pocket money. He was going to buy omnioculars except he already spent too much. So, he had at least 10 to start.

Garfnob

Bagman says that he's commentating. Not Crouch.

S1lm4r1l

Good point on Arthur’s power. Also the fact that he was able to keep his position in later books even though he was known for familiarising with the enemy #1 (Harry) and protecting muggles

Milana

I feel with Mr. Roberts there's 2 explanations. 1) You as the caster controls what is being removed. With Mr. Roberts, they are only removing the memories that make him question. While Lockhart was wanting to erase ALL the memories from Ron and Harry (which due to the bad wand backfired onto himself). 2) Let's not forget Hermione does alter her parents memory and later (supposedly) she finds them and returns the memories. Perhaps there are different memory charms but general term is obliviating since it's easier. However there can be partial or full charms.

Kunzite Blossom

Justice for Weatherby! Love these chapters, staying in the camp would have been so much fun!!! I would have gone absolutely broke with all those cool souvenirs. Do not know how I feel about ‘live’ figurines of actual people though, not to be gross but there are a lot of weird/creepy people out there - sure a few among wizards too 🫢 we were told that the Krum figurine was scowling at the green rosette above him so do you think they are magically programmed to react to certain things only and maybe just walk around or is it an Artificial Intelligence type of situation? Hope you’re having a great day Veggie!

Milana

Omnioculars! Such a weird but awesome item. What do you think about the twins gambling all their savings? I loved Percy's disapproval of Bagman enjoying the wand right after telling his brothers not to show off "rubbish"

Kunzite Blossom

I like how proud of his son Amos is but I can’t be the only one who felt a stab of regret when he mentioned the grandchildren who would never be. I’m sure you enjoyed the descriptions of the different wizards who had gathered and I found the outfits to be the best part of this chapter. The way Percy clearly idolizes his boss is wonderfully balanced by Mr. Crouch’s lack of interest which is clearly shown by him getting Percy’s last name wrong. Although I’m guessing from his personality that would’ve stopped if Percy corrected him since I don’t see Crouch making the same mistake again after being corrected.

Kattie Martin

I don't think we learn that the Bulgarian Minister can actually speak English until chapter 8, when they are in the top box after the match is over :)

Hairy Pothead

One small note on sonthing from last chapter. The twins have the trace on them like all wizaeds under the age of 17. You will learn more about the trace in future and why they can do magic at home and Harry can't. Listening to the audio book you won't have noticed the sign on there camp-site was spelled wezley

Jacob sparks

Man GOF is really where the movies diverge from the books to such a large degree that it feels like two entirely different stories. You will quickly start to notice that even the things that the movies kept in (two of which I will absolutely be ranting about when we get there) get butchered. I can't wait for you to fully understand why we book readers hate this movie so much. Anyway, I love all the little mentions and teases in these chapters. The world just feels so alive and magical which I know sounds redundant but I just marvel at the detail on every page.

Josh Z

In the movie we didn't hear too much from Amos Diggory except at the end and you know what happens. In the book from this chapter alone, we get a fair bit of dialogue from him. What are your thoughts on him? He definitely brags about his son Cedric a lot. We also hear one mention of the Lovegoods in chapter 6. On a side note, remember last chapter when Molly thought Bill's hair was too long and she wanted to cut it. In the movie, almost all the boys haircuts are long (Harry, Ron, Fred, George, Neville, etc.). Imagine what Book Molly would think if all her sons plus Harry had long hair like in the movie.

John Phillips

Ah, the 94 world cup... the one we (France) didn't even get to participate in because we were eliminated at the last second of the last qualifying match by a goal from... Bulgaria :-/ I don't remember it as I was only 1 year old at the time, but from what my father told me it was pretty traumatic for football fans. Thankfully we did good 4 years later in our world cup.

Alias93

Arthur is amazing. That's my whole comment. No, but I do have a lot more to say. Amos Diggory is one of the characters whose Hogwarts house we are never told. Makes me think, what his house would be. These characters are seen from Harry's perspective so we have canon evidence that Harry finds Cedric handsome. These chapters info dump you so much that I could mention many things so I just mention- Mr. Roberts. He has to be obliviated 10 times a day and nothing happens? Lockhart was hit by it once and he forgot everything. Plot hole? Also I'm very happy that Archie didn't listen to the other wizard. Let Archie wear what he wants. Chapter 7 features one of my favorites lines in the book and of course it comes from Fred. "Anyone can speak Troll. All you have to do is point and grunt."

Will

Maybe they are overencumbered by wizard wheezes? 🤷‍♂️😆

Jake M

Hey Veggie, so I just have to say this. This is the one thing that bugs me about these chapters since im a child >:( The campsite of the Weasleys is 400 meters (quarter mile) away from the point Basil is at. AND THEN they need 20 minutes to reach that campsite??? Are they crouching? Well that's it. :D

Schaumkus

love your point about Mr Weasley- I liked how willing Harry and Hermione were to help him out :)

Sandra

Hi Veggie :) Cedric has entered the chat... We hear Amos Diggory works at the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. I wonder if that could come in useful in this book :) "Harry could see at once why Percy idolised him"- lol. I absolutely love Stephen Fry's Percy. little fun fact: in the 1994 football World Cup, Ireland and Bulgaria did very well! Unlike Scotland, England and Wales, just like Charlie said before :)

Sandra

Hi all! In these chapters we learn a lot more about the differences between different transport methods. - Apparating is difficult and risky and needs a license but can get you mostly anywhere (except Hogwarts). - Floo powder can be used by all but you need a fireplace and the powder costs money. Probably also not good if you are old/poorly. - Portkeys can get you anywhere and as a group, but need to be pre-arranged and might be a bit fiddly. - Brooms are fast but not great for long distance. Not to mention could break the law in regards to muggles spotting them. - The knight bus is great for emergencies and those who can't use any other methods but it definitely has faults and the destination probably needs to be near a road. I hear people complain that there are too many transport methods in the wizarding world but they do have differences and individual uses. Also muggles have bikes and scooters and they are basically the same haha

rreowenn

Hi Veggie (and other Knights!) I wonder if the introduction of 'splinching' was the author's way of excusing why wizards don't just apparate everywhere all the time, otherwise things like thestrals and the Knight Bus would be a bit redundant for adults. Similarly, you have to wonder about the safety of MacGuffinkeys. Disguising them as "everyday objects" and then leaving them lying around in fields, it's a wonder the World Cup wasn't full of Wombles! Good on Archie wearing whatever he feels most comfortable in! One of very few (if any) gender-non-conforming moments in the books that I can recall, but it's played as a joke, sadly. Lastly - since you were talking in the last book club about other languages, I thought you might be interested to know Philosopher's Stone was the longest work published in Ancient Greek since the 3rd century AD! Hope you have/had a lovely birthday (and sorry again about the gift fail!)

Jake M

I didn't have anything to say about the last chapter, but I do for this one. As an adult, the way Molly handles Fred and George is quite disappointing. They obviously were in the wrong for the whole “prank” on Dudley but the fact that they developed all of these things at just 16 is incredible. She seems so focused on there only being one right career path (that being a job in the ministry) that she doesn’t see how miserable those two would be doing anything other than what they are doing. Also, just a fun story from when I was a kid, when this came out I was still at the age where my mom was reading these to my brother and I and the voices she did spooked me so much that I asked her to stop doing them :D Also, just editing to add that I’m seeing the SSO (local symphony orchestra) doing Philosopher’s Stone live in concert this weekend!!!

Jacqueline Chaiton

Chapter 7 is one of my favourite chapters in the entire series! I can't help but feel like I'm there alongside Harry seeing all the different crazy tents and outfits. It's so fun hearing about all the quidditch merchandise and seeing other students with their families. I'm reading the illustrated edition of the book and that just elevates my enjoyment as the beautiful drawings capture the chaos and excitement of the event perfectly!

Marianne

So many cameos in these chapters: the Lovegoods are mentionned, we see Oliver Wood, Seamus, Dean and Ernie Macmillan. Harry is already spilling water over himself at the sight of Cho Chang, and we get Ron and Hermione's first reactions to Viktor Krum. There is also a mention of foreign wizarding schools (already planting the seeds for the triwizard tournament). We don't get much from Cedric, but we hear more from his dad, what did you think of him? He kind of reminded me of you during your quidditch rants in PoA (''One falls off his broom, one stays on, you don't need to be a genius to tell which one's the better flier!''). By the way, we can see Cedric is still not forgiven for his crime of winning against gryffindor... I loved Mr Weasley's enthusiasm at the idea of doing things the muggle way, and all the extravagant tents from other wizards trying to show off. And finally we meet Mr Crouch and Ludo Bagman (new character!), what did you think of them? In the last book club you predicted exactly how Percy would react when Mr Crouch shows up, you really know him well. As far as I remember, Percy wasn't in the GoF movie at all, and obvioulsy neither were Bill and Charlie. A shame... The book exclusive content has already been awesome up to this point, but I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on the next two chapters, they are going to blow your mind.

Alias93

I always like those weird coincidences between secondary or tertiary characters. James Potter probably played Quidditch against Regulus Black and Barty Crouch Jnr at school.

S1lm4r1l

Archie is a total mood. The image of an old wizard in a flowery nightgown stubbornly insisting he isn't going to put on some trousers because he "likes a healthy breeze round my privates thanks" never fails to cheer me up. I think the early part of this book demonstrates that Arthur's power and importance is very different to what we've been led to believe. He is on first-name-terms with almost everyone. Given the Bulgarian complaints about the number of seats, it seems incredible that Arthur was able to obtain 10 tickets as a favour for getting Ludo Bagman's brother off that criminal charge. Arthur clearly wields a significant amount of "soft power" within the Ministry. His department has the power to embargo Ali Bashir's flying carpets. All of this is quite ironic given his complaints about Lucius Malfoy and how well-connected he is. Despite what his children think of his job, Arthur's influence reaches further than they think. However, I have an alternative theory about why/how Arthur was able to get the tickets which I'll explain in a more relevant chapter. Which did find more interesting of Bagman and Crouch? Which would you prefer to work for? Given that Bagman's character was entirely eliminated in the movies, which do you think is going to be more relevant to the plot going forward?

S1lm4r1l

Hey Veggie, One thing that always disappointed me when reading these chapters is that we missed out on a golden interaction between two characters. Think about it, Oliver Wood and Percy Weasley were Gryffindor boys in the same year at Hogwarts, which means that they shared a dormitory and were roommates for SEVEN YEARS. What must a conversation between Oliver Wood and Percy Weasley be like?! Also, we get our introduction to Ludo Bagman. An interesting character that (as you're going to start hearing a lot with the books from this point on) was left out of the movies. He's a fun and sometimes frustrating character, but I'll let you learn more about that as the story continues. Also, we get Mr. Crouch's introduction and start to learn about him and his life/backstory. Anyways, I unfortunately didn't have much to say for these chapters but really looking forward to being part of the discussion with the next few chapters when the book really starts to kick into high gear and gets really good! Love enjoying your first experiences with the books just like I had them over 20 years ago when they first came out. Cheers from the USA!!

Kevin Morris

So much fun in these chapters. I don't believe i ever participated in a book club before. But i knew what was going to happen in these chapters. So i have just two small things. Portkeys being considered litter by muggles. This would have to change in modern times. As we get more conscious about our enviroment. We would toss it in a garbage bag. Oops, no travelling for our wizard neighbour today. It would be nice to hear about magical stuff evolving to keep us muggles away from it. Old Archie, this would have been hilarious in the movie. I bet you could come up with a british actor who would be perfect for this. (lets go on another british sitcom tangent). Love the book club and i can't wait until the other books.
