####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

BOSS WILLOW IS BACK!! She absolutely killed it in this one!  So sad she won't be coming to Oxford :(  But I loved the scene with her and Buffy at the end.  I feel like it has something that Buffy has needed to hear for the longest time!

Very interesting friction between Wes and the 'Wes Gang' (working title).  The fact he is... kind of right, and simply can not imagine why anyone would risk losing the box.

And the box... oh the box...

I love how this episode really tide up several story points, so we can sit back and enjoy the fight battle in the coming episodes.  Great stuff!

P.S - HOW... HOW did Snyder survive this one??

Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

***Trigger warning from the previous episode: Discussion of suicide*** Thank you for addressing the "what a weird gun to choose for suicide" comments. First of all, if someone is determined to end their life, they will do it with whatever is available. Secondly, there are many horrible documented cases of suicide by a rifle or shotgun rather than a handheld. And thirdly, critiquing someone's choice of suicide method seems in the worst taste imaginable.

It's because at the time it was established it was in what was known as the "Northwest Territory," because while it wasn't at the northwestern point of the land mass, it was at the northwestern part of the territory that these white people had seized.

What the mayor said about them was correct and they’re both in denial

Flora Smith

Buffy's strangely off in the last scene, saying the Mayor doesn't even know what a long-term relationship is - um didn't he just have a speech explaining he was married to a woman for decades until she grew old and wrinkly and senile and eventually died? He knows more about long-term relationships than she does. She's been with Angel what, all of a few months? How much time have they actually dated since they've known each other? Really not much, most of that time they weren't together. They were only together for a few eps in season 2 pre-Angelus, and for a few eps this season.

Hey so as a Canadian I have always heard about these schools and never understood them. Why are Ivy League schools called Ivy League and what makes them better? Better teachers? Classes or programs that aren't offered anywhere else? They're just older and have produced more historically successful people? If you feel like explaining a bit more I'd appreciate it, but you don't have to.

Maggie

I think it's strange that they would make money. Don't college athletes get a cheap or free ride to college anyway? That's already enough. If smart people aren't getting paid to go to college and participate in its organizations, athletic people shouldn't be either imo.

Maggie

I had heard of Northwestern but had no idea it was in Illinois. I've been to Illinois. It's in the east. As far as how north or south, it's rather in the middle. I get why it'd be confusing to call it Middle-eastern but I don't see why the heck they'd call it Northwestern either. I was surprised that you didn't seem too surprised about Cordelia having a job. Her family is super rich, Xander alludes to that earlier. Don't you think it's weird she got a job?

Maggie

best line of the episode "I need a volunteer to hit weasley" lol

College athletes are allowed to make money now. I hate it because that's not what college sports are supposed to be about, but most people seem to like it. Cordelia got into USC, which is a private college in LA. (USC is a very expensive school in a very low income area, and UCLA is an affordable ((for in-state)) school in LA in a very nice area of the city.) Northwestern is a good private college north of Chicago. Duke is a decent private school in North Carolina, and Columbia is a great school in NYC. All are very expensive, but (back when this show was made), only Columbia would have actually had cache. The real life school that UC Sunnydale would be (based off the city most say Sunnydale is "supposed" to be), has a reputation of a party school but is a decent college. Thank goodness, Season 3 is almost over. This is probably a 2 for me, with Snyder and Wesley being my favorites.

Watched! I agree about Snatch; it was a really good film. I don't usually like heist/crime movies, but I really liked that one. Scarface was another I liked, but I have to confess I actually hated The Godfather, which is such a classic, LOL. I'm also a fan of Wesley. I can't exactly go into why just yet and don't even want to hint, but I can say that the actor is quite good. Yes, it was the Judge who arrived in boxes, you're correct. He couldn't be killed by "any weapon forged by man," and this was in much older times, so an Army had to defeat him by putting him in pieces. Still "alive" in a sense, the pieces were put into separate boxes and sent to various parts of the world. Spike arranged for those boxes to be found and brought together to assemble the Judge for Drusilla's happiness. Don't feel too bad; many Americans can't spell ILLINOIS either, especially with the end part sounding like "noy" but spelled NOIS. At this point in the season, it is now alright for me to hearken back to a comment you made many episodes ago, about the time Faith went bad. You said Faith is "now the anti-Buffy." I can now point out without spoilers that this episode makes your comment even more profound. We have seen the development father/daughter-like relationship between Buffy and Giles over the seasons. THIS season -- and especially THIS episode -- shows how much a very similar father/daughter relationship has developed between Mayor Wilkins and Faith. It's the twisted, dark version of Buffy/Giles.

I can't wait to watch this, definitely an episode I enjoy, and perversely, I can't *wait* to see your reaction to the Gavrocks! I've worked through my arachnophobia, so no creepy-crawlies bother me anymore and now I think the Gavrocks are pretty cool for evil things. I appreciate that this episode brings Snyder into the mix, showing us that while he is in "the know" of some supernatural things and he is deferential to the Mayor, he is *not* in the Mayor's inner circle and working on whatever this Ascension is. Another great thing about this episode is I think it shows a new level of maturity to Willow. She's always been the level-headed, dependable one ("Old Reliable") so definitely mature, but this is a new kind of maturity. It's her increasing self-confidence in her abilities and realization of what she wants to do in life, and her steadiness in the face of danger is a real turning point. Have you noticed a shift in her fashion style with this episode? 😀 I get where Wesley was coming from, and I don't think it makes him a bad guy to be more concerned about the greater good. He doesn't have any sort of bond with Willow, and he doesn't grasp the depth of what that group has gone through and faced together over the years that has entrenched them into a solid unit. It's a moral quandary, for sure, and there is no real right-or-wrong answer IMO. I could see myself in Wesley's shoes, willing to sacrifice one for many. Then I picture my sister or my best friend in Willow's shoes, and the answer is no longer that simple anymore. In that moment, it's very difficult to care about everyone else because a loved one is in danger.

Small intro to College & Uni In The United States, totally skippable if you're not interested. (Also, apologies for me getting way too into this and writing too much.) The very best schools are the Ivy League schools: Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Yale. There are 11 of these, equivalent to Oxford and Cambridge for you. I would argue that Oxbridge is a level above the Ivies, but I imagine most Americans disagree. The next schools are Tier 2. These are the "really good" schools: Columbia, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Dartmouth, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern. I think an equivalent for you might be Leeds, or University of London? They cost a lot, easily $60K to $80K per year (50K to 65K pounds), not including food/housing. Willow got into everything, obviously. But Cordelia and Buffy both got into Tier 2 schools with an acceptance rate of under 10%! In fact, Cordelia got into several. They are both smart cookies and I am proud of them. UCLA is "The University of California - Los Angeles." It is actually a Tier 2 school as well. Buffy and Willow are going to UC - Sunnydale, which is a (fake) branch of the University of California system. That doesn't have the same prestige, but getting into any branch of a "state school" (like University of California, University of Texas, etc) is nothing to sneer at. "State universities" are what Americans call "public" -- they're attached to the state governments and partly funded with taxpayer money. Anyone can apply, but out-of-state applicants have to pay a lot more tuition (if they get accepted, and choose to attend). For UCLA right now, it's 15K/year in-state and 45K/year out-of-state. There's a lot of other private colleges and universities all over the place with varying levels of repute. (Universities have "graduate programs" beyond the 4-year undergraduate degree, colleges have just the undergrad program.) Below that are Community Colleges, which are run/funded on the County level. They're a lot cheaper, a lot easier to get into, and people unfairly look down on them. (IMO, the whole higher education system is a racket and it's a REALLY good idea to do your first two years cheaply at a community college and then transfer to a better school for a diploma, if you a want a job that cares about that kind of thing.) (I ended up googling stuff for this and it turns out the way I divided Tier 1 and Tier 2 isn't technically correct, but my way is simpler, so nuance be damned.)

Yes so you might have missed it but Xander had a go at Cordelia saying she only got into the college because of her dad’s money, (which you can see really p***d her off!) Great episode. Interested to hear what you think about Faith and mayor Wilkins’s relationship?

Garry (Not Jerry)

Such a great episode, with Willow being a total badass. Like you said, Faith is clearly surprised that Willow doesn't want her back on the good side. There is a sort of "Rorschach test" for reactors when Faith looks back at her dagger. Some people think Faith is looking back at the Scoobies and wavering about being the bad guy. I never knew that until I started watching reactions -- it was always super clear to me that Faith is wishing she could go get her new knife, but other people see it differently, which is one of the reasons this show is so great and we all keep coming back to it. My opinion is that Wesley was technically correct (which is the best kind of correct). This isn't the kind of show where we let a hostage be killed for the greater good -- but dammit, it IS the logical choice! I love Wesley, and one of the reasons is that he sticks up for doing the "right" thing, no matter the cost. (I 100% agree with you about college football; it's awful.)

Wesley was right about destroying the box of Gavrock in the sense that it would be best for the greater good (have you see Hot Fuzz? you should if you haven't, if for no other reason than to understand why I have to restrain myself from repeating "the greater good"). But aside from the fact that the actors who plays Willow and Wesley have been together in RL since then, he doesn't understand the situation in one crucial sense. Would you have gone ahead with destroying the box if the Mayor had Woozle instead of Willow? The Scooby Gang aren't just acquaintances or friends to each other. They've been bonded by fighting several monsters and apocalypses. They're chosen family at this point. They couldn't risk Willow. And, yeah, the big mystery with Cordelia isn't whether those college acceptance letters were real. The mystery is why she'd need to be working at all. Because if she needs money, chances are she can't afford to go to college. There's a reason Joyce mentioned being able to afford Northwestern if Buffy's father chipped in. Good schools = big money in the United States. What I really appreciated about Willow's speech to Buffy at the end wasn't so much the part about Buffy's fight being a good one. She's been told before that she's a force for good by others before, notably Kendra. What I appreciated about that speech was that it broadened the fight to the others. They've all been fighting alongside Buffy since the start of the show, but Willow said it outright. It's a good fight and it's not just the Slayer's fight. 7.5/10 and favourite quote goes to Snyder "Why couldn't you be dealing drugs like normal people?"

Frederique Gillespie

I, for one, appreciate both your predictions and saying honestly what you think about each episode - it is a reaction, after all! I don't think I'd heard about the tree idea being Anthony Head's. I suppose it makes sense as there's usually very few blatantly slapstick moments from the main writers, and I think it's a very British kind of humour (The Plank, Only Fools, Chucklevision etc) Regarding your end comment- could that really be done? If Angel sired Buffy, she wouldn't be Buffy anymore, as she won't have a soul. Unless they had a contingency Willow in place to add a soul, but even then she may not be the same as she was alive. This isn't Twilight XD

Jake M

Thanks Ashley! I have to admit, that scene did throw me off a little (it didn't help I thought the supervisor called her a different name XD ).

VEGGIE GAMER

Just to clarify, my understanding is that Cordelia's letters were real. But up until this point our understanding was that her family was rich, so there would be no need for her to work in a shop. The implication is that, if she is working in a shop, she probably won't be able to afford to go to college. At least not a nice, expensive one. Either way, there has certainly been a change in her financial status and possibly her future.

Ashley Evers

You should change the name to Wesley Fan-club Fridays!! I swear I’m only kidding 😂 Let me watch and see what you said lol
