Such a fun episode. THANK YOU! :D

Yes so true! Buffy is intuitive that way

When you said why Angel doesn't go back to his old place do you mean the apartment or the mansion? The apartment because he was renting it and it's probably just not available anymore since he was gone for a while. As for the mansion, that is where he is. That's where he, Spike, and Dru were staying at last season.

Also a great little callback to s2 finale “You never ever got a single date in high school, did you?” Buffy to Snyder.

Thank you!!! Glad to have a head canon buddy 🤓

A great episode! Snyder as a teenager is peak hilarity. I ship Giles and Joyce, I love them both! It's awesome how you notice all of the small side characters, and instantly recognize Ethan when he reappears. The writers do a good job of building the world so that seemingly one-off characters can come back in at unexpected moments.

That is a genius headcanon and I will henceforth adopt it as mine!

Oh also the band is Cream!! The song is Tales of Brave Ulysses. Don’t know if someone already said 😊. About the accent thing, yeah there’s a big change is Giles accent but I always figured the spell reverted you back to a younger state and maybe Giles accent was different then. It was before he went to university, to Oxford, became a watcher and like you say, he was maybe talking more casually in an attempt to be cool as a lot of the other adults were in this ep. I think the places/jobs he’s went to would run you into more middle class or upper class circles depending, I know a lot of working class people who went to prestigious universities and came back with a posh accent particular to the area they were in. There’s no real confirmation though!! Also, I think ASH’s accent is more similar to this than his regular Giles accent which is funny.

I was thinking about changes in Giles during your intro discussion. I’d like to think that it was Buffy leaving and coming back that gave Giles a new lease on life. Before he seemed much more preoccupied with the weight of his job and being more serious but I think maybe he’s just glad to have Buffy home and is allowing himself to have more fun with his job? I think that’s a sweet little headcanon.

The writers in this show have become as iconic as the actors. This is the first Jane Espenson episode, one of my favorite writer/episode. Others have already explained the accent thing. Did you notice that for a brief moment, while still under the Candy spell, Giles revert to his watcher persona when he search his memory about the demon. You were wondering why Buffy didn’t bring Angel back to the mansion, but in effect it’s exactly where he is staying. The place where they moved with Spike and Drusilla after the old place was torched. It’s where Acathla was brought forward and where Angel came back.

8/10. This is one of the few season 3 episodes that I like, but it's just so much fun. Giles is by far the best, and Snyder is a close second. Joyce goes back and forth for me. She loves her daughter and wants what's best for her, but she's also absent a ton.

I've always liked Joyce, but I like her more now that she knows what's going on with Buffy. Personally, I love Snyder in this episode. He's lots of fun. This is the third episode Ethan has been in. The first one was Halloween, from season 2, when everyone turned into their costumes. The second was The Dark Age, also from season 2, where Jenny was possessed by the demon Igon. Such a fun reaction, Veggie. I knew this one would be right up your alley.

Band Candy is legendary. How can it fail to be, when Ethan Rayne is involved? And I love Joyce. I love and like her. :) I don't always agree with her, but she's a good egg. Season 3 is amazing on the whole, but it can be a little fraught with tension at times, so episodes like this are absolute gems. It's just great to let some of that pressure off. Still hate that Xander and Willow are "fluking" but I forebear. What amazes me upon so many rewatches is how the adults are all acting irresponsibly for plot reasons, but Buffy (who's supposed to be this immature teenager) solves the situation. She will drive like a maniac and lie to her "parents" (in quotations because Giles technically isn't) but she comes through, time and again. Which is why she's my personal hero and I probably end up giving her too much slack on occasion. Funnily enough, it's the reverse character evolution that makes Giles a hero for me as well. Now, I understand his teenage years scared him when they spun out so far out of control. But I do think he overdid it in the other direction thereafter. The Giles of season 1 was far too strict in his expectations, though he showed the capacity to adjust well enough. It's when he finds the middle ground between the cautious Watcher and the rebellious teen that I adore Giles. Snyder as a teen... now that was also a revelation. It's unfortunate that Synder as an adult is well outside our reach, because I feel like this episode humanized him so much. His teenage years were rough, so he gets his revenge on the students. 8.5/10

I’m tickled right now, because every time last week that you talked about how much you enjoy the lighter/fun episodes, this is what I kept thinking of, without remembering it was literally the next episode 🤣 You can definitely refer to him as just “The Mayor”, that’s what he’s called the most throughout the show. I’m not sure you caught what was actually implied by that last moment between Joyce and Giles. I don’t think anyone was suggesting they didn’t remember what happened (although I got confused for a second too, because they weren’t there for the car accident, so it sounded like Buffy was explaining things to them). Buffy was saying that it was a good thing she got there before they “actually DID something”. The awkward look between them suggests she is wrong about that 😅
