[CLOSED] The Harry Potter Book Club! - Your Notes for Chapters 16 & 17 of the Prisoner of Azkaban!

THIS PART OF THE BOOK CLUB IS NOW COMPLETE!  SEE YOU ALL NEXT TIME! :)

Here is a chance to get your comment read out in the next Book review video!

If you are reading along with the reviews, we are covering chapters "Professor Trelawney's Prediction" and "Cat, Rat and Dog"! So if you have any thoughts, opinions, comparisons or questions regarding these, please leave a comment below!

I do have to ask, try to keep them fairly short, like 4 or 5 sentences.  That way I can cover more when making the video.  Also try to keep them on subject and not referencing anything that we are yet to cover. Ideally, keep it to 1 comment each if you can (if you have more to say after commenting, you can edit it and add to it! :) ).  These are just rough guidelines rather than rules, I want to be able to fit in as many of you as possible! :)

NEW FEATURE!! - As some of you may want to make a comment, but not have it replied to by others, you can now Message me your thoughts on the chapters by DM'ing me on here.  If you do, please follow all the above rules, especially avoiding mentioning things in future chapters or books!  Oh and please start your DM message with "Book Club -"!

To anyone that does reply to comments below, please make sure you are being friendly and respectful!  A lot of tone and meaning can be lost in text, after all!  If you disagree with someone on something, keep it polite and remember the golden rule in life - Sometimes you have to just agree to disagree! :)

Thanks, guys!! :)

I'm not sure about the Death Eaters, but James Potter used Scourgify (a cleaning spell) to choke and effectively waterboard Severus in SWM.

I really like that theory. A simpler explanation though is the twins wouldn't want to look at what Ron's up to. They wouldn't care. They only need the map to sneak around the corridors to check if any teachers are coming.

Katie

I always thought that the "seeing Peter" is close to what you describe. KNowing Harry did not see Peter - I wonderif either has ever checked for "Scabbers/Wormtail" (like the mArauders shown in their Animagi form with their Animagi name AND if Harry would have been able to see that if the map was somehow keyed in to the Marauders/their blood.

Dara Jeeling

Now that you mention it, I kind of wish the Death Eaters had used something like that. I think it would have added a more disturbing factor to them, had they been inventive with their cruelties instead of using the Cruciatus Curse for the hundredth time.

This has a potential to turn into a really dark discussion, but... Many mundane spells can be used to hurt or even kill someone. It's like in real life. Most things aren't good or bad - they can be *used* for good or bad. You can use a knife to prepare dinner for your family, or you can use it to stab someone. Same with magic. Wingardium Leviosa - you can levitate someone over the edge of a tall building, then stop the spell. Incendio - this one is obvious. Aguamenti - you can use it to waterboard someone, probably even to drown them. I'm sure there are many more. In this particular case, I think Harry could have used Diffindo to kill Black. Cut his carotid artery or something. Now, I'm not exactly sure when Harry learned this particular spell, but if he knows it already, I think that's an answer to your question. (One of many possible answers, I am sure.)

There is a plot hole that’s always mentioned whenever the marauders map is discussed. Everyone wonders how in the three years at Hogwarts, the twins never noticed Peter on the map basically living in Rons dorm. Even if they dont know who peter is they would be suspicious if they ever see someone in Gryffindor common room that shouldn’t be there. There is a theory that the marauders were hidden on the map with some sort of password/spell and can only be seen by each other somehow which is why Lupin can see Sirius and Petigrew with the trio. Of course that would not work in the movies as harry saw Peter on the map but it does make perfect sense in the books. Also love that the books explain how Lupin found out where they were or how he found out they needed help. I understand making some scenes in the movie more grand for the sake of the movie but the books have always been more realistic and in that sense we’re able to connect with the characters more. This is common throughout the books/movies. Sorry for the long comment but there are 5 chapters left and you might want to consider covering 3 chapters in the next video as 2 of them are quite short relative to other chapters. But whatever you decide, We’ll all be eagerly waiting for your next book review! They have been amazing! Thank you

I do as well! I love that we get such an in-depth way of going through these books. (I changed the start of my comment now as it looked like I was having a dig at others who don't check other comments!)

Such an optimist ;) JK Veggie we love the longer videos.

That's an interesting point about the voice in his head telling Harry to kill Sirius, I did not pick up on that! Yes it does sound like it's the Voldemort's soul talking

Katik

Love the name Monty for a python! :)

Here are some things that I enjoy in these chapters (and I will try not to mention things mentioned by others above me): - The pointless flobberworm exam - Florean, the ice cream man, getting a mention again during the exams - Ron talking passionately to Fudge about Buckbeak (we're slowly seeing the trio losing faith in authorities, which obviously is an important part of the HP story in future books) - The description of Hagrid's helplessness. So sad, but such a good description of it, and it seems so right for the character. - Lupin throwing the wands back to the trio. I know this was mentioned in another comment, but I mostly like it because he understands how to get people to listen. It's a way of dealing with people which explains why he was such a good teacher (despite the whole Snape/boggart thing). I'll end this comment by guessing how long into the video you are when reading this sentence: 03.58.22 :D

Hi, its my first time here after I finally caught up on the discussions. I have read those books so much as a kid and its great to experience it again with you after a couple of years (and also reading it in English for the first time). I really love how different and more unique kinds of pets are a big part of this book, I have a pet snake (his name is Monty because he is a bull python) and i think its just really cool to try to learn about different characters buy looking at the animals they connect to. I honestly never really appreciated the movies as a kid because I loved the books to match, but i can still say this one is probably the best one in my opinion for the sole reason that they got a really good director to do it so it really stands out. The production of all the movies is still incredible (especially the practical affects and sets) but in my opinion after this one the most obvious problem is that the books just get way longer, (goblet of fire is almost triple the length of philosopher stone) to the point were they just can’t tell the whole story in a two and a half hours movie even if everything else is perfect (and its not, but I know you already talked enough about the portrayal of the main characters especially Ron in this chapter , and to the other problems I’ll get in later books ). Btw sorry if I have writing mistakes I’m still practicing writing in English

Hey Veggie, first time participating in the book club. Been watching your HP journey for over a year and it's been awesome, your videos make me a very happy brazilian Ravenclaw. Now, for the chapters, even though I love this book, the classes schedule for Hermione to me seems a bit forced so that she can have the timeturner and a convenient way to help Sirius and Buckbeak Did you notice the executioner's name? It's Macnair, he was mentioned one time in one of the movies, but I won't say which one in case you don't remember "Do it now! - said a voice in his head", this happened when Harry is pointing his wand at Sirius. As far as I remember everytime Harry thinks something the narrator just explains it with no dialogue, but this time it specifically mentions a voice in his head, I wonder if it has to do with the Horcrux or am I looking to much into it? Even if it's understandable, especially at their age (even though the majority of the wizard society is like that), it's sad to see the prejudice against werewolves here, the trio's comments were almost all regarding Lupin's condition rather than him helping a possible mass murderer. Interesting to note that Harry's scene seeing Pettigrew on the map was transferred to Harry, and what a good cliffhanger Sorry for the long comment, will try to get more to the point in the future!

Chorafini (Luiz)

The beginning of chapter 16 is why I have a bit of a beef with this book. The time of exams just doesn't make sense (I mean the whole plot about Hermione and her taking all of the classes is, but we discussed it previously); how is it possible and even logical for a school to set double exams for one year in two days??? I refuse to believe Hermione is the only student who wanted to pick Charms and Ancient Runes - normally the school would probably set up a Charms exam for 3rd years at 1 and Ancirnt Runes for 4th or 5th year at the same time and then, let's say have 3rd years take Ancient Runes exam at 3 or another day. That's how schools work! Other interesting things I picked up in these chapters: - In Trelawney's prediction she said "His servant has been chained these 12 years" which is a misdirect to Black (but Pettigrew has been chained to living as a rat) - Why did Hermione not use Reparo for Hagrid's broken kettle? - I like that the trio didn't actually see what happened with Buckbeak like in the film, but only heared noises behind them to make them believe Buckbeak really died. - Crookshanks being more important than in the film, love it! - How funny it must've looked, Sirius sitting on the bed with a cat on his lap, and Ron scooting away Anyway, sorry for the long comment and greetings from Poland!

Gothic Llama

Hey Veggie, i have a point about this chapter 17 that always left me confused. I kind of got the feeling in the book Harry was planning to kill Black, i mean in the movie he shouts, that he wants to kill him in his emotional breakdown, but i mean, how would Harry go about this? He should not know how to kill someone with magic. Is he gonna Wingardium Leviosa a knife into Black or how exactly is this gonna play out? I think i read book 1 and 2 when i was very young and then later watched the movies up to number 4, before reading the books and i have to admit i did not understand the story that unfolds in chapter 17 and following chapters, in the portrayal of the movie. So i can't wait to see if you like them and if they maybe clear things up for you aswell. Hope you are doing good Veggie, can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Jonas (Methanoutput)

Hi, Veggie! I love your content because it feels like added value experiencing the HP movies and books again for the first time through the eyes of a friend. Now for these chapters: yay, Crookshanks! And why is Scabbers so edgy to start with? He doesn't seem to be in danger. Keep being you, Veg. We love you!

Yankee Veg

Crookshanks is part Kneazle which is why he's so intuitive about good vs bad. But I do agree with you, animals (magical or not) are often very good judges of character :)

itsanursething

I'm so excited that we're getting to my favorite part of the book! These chapters are so great. I'm a cat person, so one thing I especially like is how crucial Crookshanks is to this part of the plot. I think he is often overlooked, but he really is the MVP in chapter 17 (defending Sirius, helping Hermione and Harry with the whomping willow etc.). I think Crookshanks is supposed to have some magical intelligence (although I've met some real cats that are almost as smart as him), but animals in general are really good at identifying good people vs. bad people, so I think the fact that Crookshanks likes Sirius and hates Scabbers is a subtle hint to the reader about their true personalities. I also think that it's really sweet that Hermione asks for help and Crookshanks immediately responds; it really shows their bond! I think we should have had more Crookshanks in the movie!

Maria

This is where all of the information is missing in the movie. So much more info about the Marauders and what actually led up to Sirius being in Azkaban and even HOW he escaped. Then there's Ron's heroism and how they actually got past the Whomping Willow. I love the barely seen interaction between Sirius and Crookshanks in this book that only Harry sees.

Annette Elliott

We finally got to one of the most EGREGIOUS Ron/Hermione book to movie mishaps! The movie made her out to be some sort of action hero! Dodging the tree like a pro and grabbing a stunned Harry, then selflessly putting herself between Harry and danger. Meanwhile Ron is bumbling and scared. What a big difference! Hermione is my fave, but this was insane. She was screaming for help while Harry figured things out, and she was trying to hush the boys while Ron stood on a BROKEN leg ready to die to protect his best friend. Were you surprised at this (unnecessary) change?
