Loved it!! I was so confused halfway in, but really enjoyed the ending.  Really sad but sweet solid side-quest!  Spike's 'twist' sure will make for interesting watching, here on out!

... Ben did have a belt.

Love you, guys! Hope you had a great weekend and have an awesome week!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

Buffy Fridays (on a Sunday)! Season 2 Episode 19 First Time Reaction!

Comments

I was waiting for you to get to the Snyder line: "Pathetic no-life Vegan". You didn't dissapoint! LOL

The most important part in this episode is Buffy, seeing heself, not in the role of the victim, but the role of the murderer. She more or less feels like she murdered Angel and blames herself.

This is maybe my favorite episode of season 2. The first time I watched it, I audibly gasped when I realized that James/Grace was a direct parallel to Buffy/Angel. "A person doesn't just wake up and stop loving someone" - Angel did exactly that. Woke up in the middle of the night, ran outside, lost his soul. "I killed you." "It was an accident." - Buffy feels guilt and like she killed Angel, and he is telling her it wasn't her fault. "I loved you until my last breath." - Angel was truly happy. True happiness is the trigger that took his soul. He was feeling deeply in love with her until the moment his soul was gone. If you haven't, I really recommend rewatching the scene but completely forget about James and Grace. Listen to every line as Buffy and Angel (NOT Angelus) having a conversation. Angel got to come back to her for a few minutes! :) I just love that it seems like a random side quest episode until the final act... And then it hits you like a ton of bricks that it was about Buffy/Angel the entire time :)

I recognized the janitor in Deadwood, after the fact. "Oh hey it's that janitor from the Buffy ghost episode'.

This is one of my favorite 'side-quest' episodes of the whole show, because of the way it blends the major arc of the season so perfectly into the monster of the week. And the way they switch it up and have James possess Buffy...so good! That scene with the quick cuts between the couple in the past / Angel and Buffy really stands out to me. I always look forward to it when rewatching. The editor of this episode deserves all the awards!

This was a great episode. I only watched Buffy when it was first on TV and I'm now watching it again with your reactions. Btw, not sure if you found out what else that song was used in but in case you didn't here's a website that lists all the TV shows and movies it's appeared in: https://music.fandom.com/wiki/I_Only_Have_Eyes_for_You

I honestly think this might be one of the best written episodes. It's heartbreaking to realize that every time Buffy goes on a rant about how James doesn't deserve forgiveness, it's herself she can't forgive. Even given that, it struck me at one point how unfair it was to have that attitude toward a student who I assume is under age, and therefore legally not able to consent to the relationship. And then it hit me for the first time that that is another parallel. Buffy is underage too. Angel is hundreds of years old. The relationship was just as inappropriate, and Angel was just as much at fault as Grace.

Clever! I didn't make the connection between the two card games, lol.

This has probably been said before, but the movie isn't really considered canon, and there is a flashback episode later on that answers some of the questions you ask. Not to say you shouldn't react to the movie; just don't expect it to answer all your questions about Buffy's past.

Jake M

Well if he does in the next episode clearly he's going to lose, since it's Go Fish not Snap... 😏😆

To be fair to Ben, our brains remember very odd things. The first time I met two of my closest friends was in a creative writing class ten years ago; don't recall anything about it, except that the guy next to us wrote about a World of Warcraft panda race and was trying to explain them to a relatively technophobic teacher. My friends think I'm mental. Noticed in this one James Masters was credited "as Spike"! Should've said "as two fingers guy" though. Hope it's not too spoilery to say I'm calling it now, this is not the last time you'll say "What have you become?" XD

Jake M

They were wasps. :) Both Angel and Xander said "wasps." Yes, I agree with others, if you do decide to watch it over, focus on the dialogue between Angel and Buffy; it's a parallel to their situation. I feel horrible for the janitor, and I do wish that had been wrapped up/resolved at the end with him being acquitted because of lack of evidence. Though I imagine if he remembered the scene, he may have confessed. :( I feel horrible for the woman whom he shot, too. I love having big, bad Spike back! My favorite recurring villain in the entire series. "Willow, what have you become." heheheheheheh "Spike's going to snap, guys." "If he does snap, what happens?" :p I love your commentary.
