Movie Watcher Reads Harry Potter For the First Time! - The Chamber of Secrets Chapters 17 & 18!

AND we complete Chamber of Secrets with by far the longest video yet! XD So sorry about the length, guys!  I'll say this - It is the final 2 chapters, a Book Overview review, Favourite Character discussion, the Poll that was posted here a few days ago and of course, the Harry Potter Book Club! All together bring the video to a MASSIVE 3 and a half hours! XD

I do worry that I may have been rambling a bit in it, so I hope it isn't too unfocused.  Now we can get ready for Prisoner!!! (I may do a couple of other Potter related videos before hand)

Love you guys!  Get comfy, this one is a bit... epic. XD

You: Justin doesn’t need to apologise to Harry for suspecting him. He had reasons to doubt him and was scared for those reasons. Everyone in school talks about Harry being a suspect but no one is supposed to need to apologise. Harry in HP1: Suspects Snape of being on Voldemort‘s side for good reasons. He‘s scared of what that means for him because of his history. Only Ron, Hermione, Hagrid and I believe McGonagall know about his suspicions but he‘s supposed to go apologise to Snape for something Snape does not even know about. Is that just your Hufflepuff bias or do you actually think these situations are that different? (As a Hufflepuff myself - absolutely not mad if it‘s bias; As a teacher myself - I will not be liking or defending Snape any time soon even if he does have some decent moments) Edit: I also don‘t find the book Tom too bad as a villain or not enough like the Voldemort from other books. Because I always thought, well he‘s his 16 year old self here and just thinking of how different I am now to my own 16 year old self, I can totally see this being the case. I can totally see 16 year old Tom having the time of his life during all this.

But it is a woman's NAME. It does NOT have to be literal. To paraphrase an old 'Two Ronnies' joke, just imagine what Arsenal F.C. would use for THEIR emblem if it was!

Alexis Burrows

The Burrow. Part of Voldemort's ultimate downfall is that egotistical shortsightedness of his. If it doesn't directly apply to his aims then he dismissed things as unimportant. Like the magic of love, loyalty and the magic of a phoenix. If the laundry was in a hamper for the house elf to collect and wash then there would be no expectation that the clothes were being given to the house elf. Dobby even says that they were very careful not to hand him so much as a sock I think.

Annette Elliott

About the sock - I've thought of a way that it *could* make sense for them to do laundry. There, the clothes would be left, but not discarded. In this scene, Lucius deliberately throws away a sock, with no intention of it remaining his, so it is no longer in his posession. It is Dobby's sock when he catches it, as both Harry and Lucius has freely given it away with no intention of keeping it.

The Burrow. I've finally caught up with the reviews and I have to say that I love them! Since I missed the book club when it was opened I'd like to share my theory on why Dumbledore chose Lockhart as the DADA teacher. I think it was because he wanted to show Harry what would happen if Harry let fame go to his head. I think Harry, seeing what fame did to Lockhart, would see that as a bad example and would become even more humble than he already was. Anyway, I can't wait for the Prisoner of Azkaban, thank you for making these videos.

The Burrow Well Ginny having hand me downs doesn't necessarily mean its from her brothers. Some could be her mothers old clothes, and there's a store in Diagon Alley for used stuff. So they could get her robes, books and more there for cheaper then brand new. Also yes. Book Ginny is so much more well developed then Movie Ginny. In the movie partly agree. I think she loves her family but I think part of her is embarrassed by the family so maybe she tries to do her own thing. However, she does still love her family and does love being apart of her family. I think similarly to Ron she does have her doubts as shes the youngest and the only girl among her siblings. She probably feels a lot of pressure like Ron does.

Kunzite Blossom

Remember when looking at things the movies added, that the following few books were generally already out. So the movie writers knew exactly how bad Azkaban was for example. I don't think Rowling had really worked that out yet when she was writing Chamber

Xeph

Yep, forgot to mention black/raven claws too

Katie

That's exactly what it was

Jacqueline Chaiton

AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAh house elves can't do laundry is a friggen HILARIOUS thought!!!!!!!

Shiby23

That’s really interesting, thank you! :)

Here's an entry about werewolf cubs from Pottermore: One curious feature of [lycanthropy] is that if two werewolves meet and mate at the full moon… the result of the mating will be wolf cubs [that] resemble true wolves in everything except their abnormally high intelligence. They are not more aggressive than normal wolves and do not single out humans for attack. Such a litter was once set free, under conditions of extreme secrecy, in the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts, with the kind permission of Albus Dumbledore. The cubs grew into beautiful and unusually intelligent wolves, and some of them live there still, which has given rise to the stories about ‘werewolves’ in the Forest – stories none of the teachers, or the gamekeeper, has done much to dispel because keeping students out of the Forest is, in their view, highly desirable.” So, Riddle may have been lying about Hagrid raising werewolf cubs under his bed but this explains the rumours of werewolves in the forest and why both Malfoy (in book 1) and Ron (in book 2) are afraid there are werewolves in the forbidden forest (although in both instances the moon is described as bright and could be a full moon). There are still wolves in the forest but the teachers want to keep that rumour going that werewolves are in there.

Also J.K. could have just meant the colour raven which would fit because eagles do have black claws. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Tämi

How come Gryffindor has a lion and not a Gryffin then? 😁 I think the original eagle crest in the books is so much more impressive looking than the raven version used in the movies. Also, the four mascots are supposed to represent the four elements of alchemy: fire (lion), water (snake), earth (badger) and air (eagle). Ravens are not associated with air in alchemy, they are associated with operations that involve breaking things down. That's why it's an eagle not a raven. Also, the eagle represents the ability to soar higher than others which symbolises Ravenclaw's traits of seeking knowledge and wisdom above all else.

Katie

Haha, that's also quite possible! :D If nothing else, that dialogue is great for showing the first glimpses of how werewolves are pretty much considered second-class citizens, setting up for the later books and Prisoner of Azkaban in particular. Yes, I watched an interview a while back where he explains it... I think he's quite upset that some people can't let it go, when he really wasn't trying to destroy the character or the scene or anything. :(

Rebecca May

To be fair: Calling it RAVENclaw but using an eagle was a weird choice of Rowling 😅 That said: They probably still should have caught that in production🤔

Diego Zenhäusern

I mean I like the explanation for the werewolf cubs, but the actual answer is probably that Rowling didn't think about it. 😅 Which is completely understandable, since I din't think about this either until I'd read the books like 10 times xD ! Also: didn't know the thing about Jason Isaacs, that's really interesting😮

Diego Zenhäusern

Not only did the movies get our colours wrong but they also used the wrong bird. In the books it's an eagle and in the movies it's a raven just to dumb things down

Katie

The Burrow. Has anyone else discriminated against magic users specifically? Yes! The Dursleys! Adding another layer of parallels to Harry and Tom and their stories. Also historically many people lol. Ravenclaws get so little respect the movies even got our colors wrong! So excited for you to start Prisoner of Azkaban, that's where the movies really started going off-book. So many subplots, details, character moments, and explanation were missed out that I think you'll love! Great video as always!

Q

The Burrow 😊 Something I feel is very important to mention here is the film scene where Lucius starts to say “Avada Kedavra”. Jason Isaacs has literally received hate mail over that scene, and it was a completely honest mistake. It was written in the script that Lucius should raise his wand before being thrown down the corridor by Dobby, and Jason thought he should begin to say a curse to make the scene more realistic. Somewhat panicking because he couldn’t remember any spells, he asked one of the crew, “Do you know any spells?” At first they couldn’t think of any, but then came up with “Avada Kedavra.” Poor Jason, he truly didn’t know that it was the literal death spell! He was just looking for a way to make the scene more authentic, and some people still hate him for it! I feel so bad for him. Anyway, I love these videos (the longer the better!), and I really appreciate your efforts to reassure us that you still love the films… As someone who adores both the films and the books, I do worry that you’ll be influenced into disliking the films. Speaking of the films, in the final scene of Chamber of Secrets, while Draco, Crabbe and Goyle stay seated, the majority of Slytherin house do stand up, and you do see that Professor Snape is also applauding as the camera pans out of the window. As for the “werewolf cubs under the bed” comment, I expect Voldemort was being facetious and cruel, rather than being literal. He was just trying to get across how “stupid” Hagrid was for his habit of looking after creatures that no one else thought worthwhile… Also pretty dark and horrible that in his mind, looking after werewolves (who are still HUMAN, most of the time) is about as worthwhile as looking after giant spiders or three-headed dogs or Flobberworms or whatever else. Just horrible. P.S. My favourite instance of internal dialogue in a film is from Interview With the Vampire, because it actually makes sense within the “interview” device of the film, and you get some really gorgeous lines straight from the book that you wouldn’t get otherwise. Mostly I hate internal dialogue in films, because it’s a fairly lazy way of telling rather than showing, but when done well it can be super effective.

They could have also flooed to Hogsmeade or McGonagall could have opened the floo in her office to them. As an extremely mild spoiler which wouldn't really ruin anything, one year during winter break they have all the students floo back to the school.

Wayne Joy

The burrow 😉 You can’t apparate to Hogwarts but you can to Hogsmeade. That’s what I assume the Weasley’s did. The thing about different wands made me think of something else you might find interesting: You don’t actually need a wand to do magic. Obviously we know that young wizards and witches do magic when they are angry or scared. In the movies we also see Dumbledore in PoA (Quiddich match versus Hufflepuff) and Hermione (several times in Halfblood prince) do magic without a wand and only with the incantation. But actually, a wand is only kind of an amplifier to make magic easier. So more powerful wizards are able to cast spells without a wand. AND in Uagadou, the African wizarding school, most students don’t use a wand! Also they are exeptionally good at self-transfiguration, meaning most oft hem are animagi. Just thought this would be a fun fact. 😊 Another great reaction, can’t wait for prisoner! 🤗

Tämi

The burrow First off, I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy it, when you point out the differences in tone between book and movie, because I rarely really notice them, since 1. I'm quite bad at noticing tone in the first place and 2. I've read the books and seen the movies so many times that I often just kinda transfer the tone of the movie scene into the book even though it doesn't belong there🤦‍♂️😂 Secondly, I don't think you're wrong with Myrtle. I think having Myrtle as comedic relief is kinda weird because it is basically making fun of someone who is depressed and has been through severe trauma. I think it's just one of the things in the books that didn't age well/ never should have been acceptable in the first place. But I guess nothing is ever perfect🤔...so it isn't something that ruins the books as a whole for me🙂 P.S. You thinking "Tom Riddle" and not "Voldemort" was Voldemort's alias made my day😅
