There were three musical numbers in this film... Did Gandalf use his ring to light the pinecones?

I really enjoyed The Hobbit (I adore Martin Freeman I think you would enjoy Sherlock if you ever wanted to watch it), I am excited to see your reaction to the rest of the series!!

I'm really late to the party with this one, so I apologise if you've already learnt this by now. The reason Saruman looks a little... odd in the film is because Christopher Lee was unfortunately not well enough to travel at the time. They shot his acting here in the UK while the rest of the crew were elsewhere (New Zealand I believe). It was then all combined together in post. It really goes to show how great an actor he was though. It's really tough doing something like that.

This probably isn't a popular opinion, but I actually enjoyed the Hobbit films a lot more than the book. Glad you're enjoying it so far!

I'm happy that you remembered Bilbo's trolls...I think it's really quite easy to miss/ forgett, especially since it's been a moment since you've seen the first LOTR movie. Also: Nice one, predicting that the eagles would come and save them:)

Wow, I didn't know that the oak shield thing wasn't in the books...it seemed like such a fairytail think🤔😮 So Saruman is basically book 5 Fudge in this movie🙃😅

My gripes are more limited now that it's been a decade since it came out but I still have a few with the series as a whole. First I will say although there are things in the next two movies I really think are awesome, I think I enjoy this movie the best out of all of them because I didn't see a whole lot comparatively added that wasn't in the books and it was a well rounded story. So my main gripes - it does add a whole lot that wasn't in the book. Lotr definitely changed a few things but since the hobbit was one small book and they made it into 3 movies, they added more than they needed to. Also, I do understand that it was a children's book and I'm ok with the lightheartedness but there are a few moments in this one (and the next) that just go over the top in the action scenes. And lastly, the cgi. It wasn't bad cgi but they had a lot more of it due to not having nearly as much time to work on the film(s). Peter Jackson had close to a decade working on LOTR but for The Hobbit he had a few months of prep. Reason is, Guillermo Del Toro was supposed to direct the films. But he dropped out pretty late (though he was still a producer and writer) and PJ had to come in, scrap everything and start from scratch. Cg was just a lot easier to handle than it was during LOTR so sadly they had to cut their losses with that. Much more green screen was used for this film than for LOTR as well. Regardless I do enjoy this film, especially if I can separate the book from the movie in my head. I'll be waiting for the reaction to the second movie and I'll tell you all the positives and negatives about that one when it comes out!

Hope you're doing well Veggie!

I’m glad you enjoyed this one. Although in my opinion nothing can mach lotr, I still like the Hobbit trilogy very much and I don’t think it deserves the hate it sometimes gets. It is its own story and as you guessed the storytelling in the hobbit book is VERY different than in lotr. One thing I like in particular about the Hobbit movies is that the orcs talk in black speech. I think that sounds awesome!

Oh balls! Sorry Leo!

Unexpected journey is definitely my favourite. Unfortunately, Peter Jackson didn't quite have the same passion, energy and drive he had for LOTR, but no other director was up to the challenge, so Jackson eventually took the job. In hindsight, they're still very good movies and Martin Freeman is a perfect Bilbo. One thing that can rival LOTR is the soundtrack, goosebumps everytime the dwarves charge into battle and Thorin's Company theme (Misty Mountains) plays. Well done on remembering the dwarves' names! I've read the book many time before the movie released and even then got them mixed up all the time. Looking forward to the next one!

Doing Doctor Who would be great! I recommend the 1996 TV movie. It has Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and a very hammy Eric Roberts

Such a lovely reaction as always, Veggie! Thank you so much for doing these films - they can't match Lord of the Rings (what could?), but I still love them very much. So happy that you're loving the story so far! A few interesting facts - Firstly, Thorin's literal oak shield was never in the book. It was solely the inspiration of Richard Armitage, the wonderful actor who played Thorin. He thought the shield should be part of Thorin's backstory, and took a sketch of it to Peter Jackson, who then incorporated it into the film. Also, though it's not explicitly stated up until the final film, Fili and Kili are Thorin's nephews, which is why he seems to care the most for them, but can also be very hard on them. As they are his sister's sons and he has no children of his own, they are also his heirs (particularly Fili, as the eldest). Speaking of family, remember the scene in Moria where Gimli is mourning over his cousin's grave? That's Balin's grave... That scene is so, so much more heartbreaking once you've seen the Hobbit films. (As a side note, I think Saruman downplaying and dismissing the threat of Sauron is pure denial, in terror of what indeed does come to pass. His fear is so great that he crumbles and joins Sauron the moment the Dark Lord gains a foothold in Mordor).

Oh HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! :)

If you've never read or listened to Sandman by Neil Gaiman, I highly recommend it. It began as a graphic novel, was made into an audiobook/radio play format on Audible starring James McAvoy and now Netflix has posted ten episodes of a Sandman series that's pretty darn faithful to the source material.

MrGreenthumb1000 .

Yay! An excuse to rewatch these movies for the first time since they came out! 😂 I actually saw these before reading the Hobbit, but I had read LotR and other Tolkien works. They're not BAD movies, they're just not on par with the masterpiece that is the Lord of the Rings. The quality took a hit for sure in pretty much all departments. But I'm glad you enjoyed this one Veggie!! 🙏
