Wizards come in all shapes and flavors. While many assume peak wizard is based on how often and how powerful it can cast a fireball spell, there are some who do not walk down the path of pure destruction. Today we are looking at a few different types of mages, though fret not if your perfect mage did not make it into this week's group. Next Monster Thursday will feature the other four schools of magic... plus maybe a few others...
Abjurer (CR 2) Always ready to protect their party, an abjurer sticks to the side lines and tries to help as much as they can. They rarely attack their enemies, instead, looking for ways to help and assist their allies.
Conjurer (CR 12) This school of magic has always been weird to me. You not only summon monsters, but you can also teleport, create fog and elements to appear, and even create a separate dimension. I typically just see them as summoners, but when you look at the wide array of conjuration spells, you get the idea that maybe... they are just stealing spells from other people. You just can't trust them, pretty soon they are going to start claiming that they are 'conjuring' a fireball to appear instead of evoking it.
Enchanter (CR 6) Here is my Unpopular Opinion on enchanters. They are the most evil of all spellcasters. I know necromancers typically get that moniker, but I think enchanters are far more insidious. They can manipulate your mind, cause you to do things you'd never do (all the while making you think you came up with the idea), and blend away into the background so you never knew you even met them. In fact, people would probably think they were the evilest of all spellcasters, but they manipulated our minds to believe necromancers are... I'm onto them...
Illusionist (CR 10) I really love the idea of illusionists, but their powers and abilities are so dependent on how a GM rules. One of my first posts on Dump Stat is all about how to use Illusion magic to create cover just because I feel bad for illusionists. They want to be cool and create entire worlds out of illusions, but they get shafted by GM's who just decide their monsters are smart enough to know an illusion when they see it. I feel your pain illusionists... your imaginary and illusory pain.
Necromancer (CR 4) I don't know why people get so upset with necromancers all the time. It's not like the previous inhabitant of a body was using that corpse anymore. To be honest, the necromancer is probably the biggest believer in recycling, reusing, and reducing. A body is still great at killing adventurers even though it has no soul in it anymore, just infuse it with some negative energy and that body is walking around again and seeking brains. Its important to use every part of the corpse so that you are wasting perfectly good materials.
