This week I decided to create a horrifying creature that one might find in the bottom of the ocean, it's body morphed and changed by the strange pressures and life of the dark ocean. This... cute? horrifying?... dragons live in the deepest parts of the ocean and stay far away from the surface world as the light is too bright.
Occasionally they will swim closer to the surface, as they are big fans of gossip and rumor as there is little entertainment far down in the crevices of the world... plus, tritons aren't a talkative race. Far too standoffish.
The inspiration behind the Deep Dragon are the anglerfish of our own world. Those horrifying teeth, their luminescent bulbs that attract fish, and did I mention the horrifying teeth?
When a sailor first sees a deep dragon, they probably don't realize it's a dragon. Tendrils that glow softly in the dark ocean, big orbs of silver for their eyes, leathery skin, bony and knobby tail and long teeth perfect for biting those who don't behave. These dragon's want to learn more and more about the world above them, searching for more entertainment in their watery depths.
Adventurers might encounter a deep dragon while sailing and during a new moon. The dragon will reach out with its mind, and begin talking and encouraging the character to not freak out. It is in search of new experiences and books for it read under the waves, even the trashy romance books about a sailor falling in love with a siren, like in the book, The Siren Call of the Heart.
Use a deep dragon whenever you want something new and creepy, when you want to hide a treasure at the bottom of the ocean and a deep dragon has found the treasure and added it to it's hoard.
