Emergency Goal Post

In that I have HIT a goal-post… and it seems I've bounced off of it. And I need your opinions, bad.

I've just hit the $1500 a month mark, possibly because of the goal associated with it. And, having done so, I scrambled to do as I promised: launch a Wednesday livestream dedicated to the analyzing of classic vinyl records. It was hella stressful: I didn't expect to get there for several months, and I had nothing prepared, nothing ready. And I even needed to solder some passive EQ stuff together to better adapt my vinyl playback system to the task.

And I did all that, went live with no warning and no announcement the very first Wednesday available, did two hours of detailed analysis of the Beatles' 'White Album' with numerous short excerpts to demonstrate my points, managed to avoid being knocked off the stream by copyright bots, finished up… and promptly got copyright clobbered for seemingly every bit of Beatle, including where I talked over them explaining what you should learn. It was a passionate, meaningful presentation, and as I knew perfectly well in my heart, it made absolutely no difference. The bots got me. And the whole POINT of the exercise is to fair-use demonstrate, not the stuff that was claimed (laughably wrong: mono versions? remixes?) but the real authentic deal that is lost every time a new remix is made to REPLACE what used to be there.

I've lost the master of what I did: it was streamed-only and I can't get access to the direct upload. Afterwards I realized I could've simultaneously captured to disk, but it's too late now. The public video is useless: Youtube isn't even letting me mute all the audio I'm talking about, even if I wanted that. I can, however, get a private copy, which is re-encoded as Youtube always does. It got re-compressed to AAC in the process.

And then I can turn that into an audio-only mp3 and give you a link to that:

So that's on my own hosting: if you want to proliferate it, then torrent it or re-host it, don't just link it. YouTube said that my stream was blocked everywhere in the whole world, but I got the audio back. It's recompressed multiple times and loses a lot (not all) of the vinyl magic people were enjoying on the stream.

You'll find there's remarkably little Beatles audio: I had a lot to say, about the recording techniques and about the whole situation. Much of my concerns were proven absolutely warranted: guys, I wasn't just making persecuted noises. I was sticking my head into a wood chipper for you and for the sake of classic albums that can't be heard this way anymore.

So, since most of you missed the stream and now can't watch it (and some of you pledged specifically to get that stuff), what shall I do? YouTube claims the experiment didn't endanger my channel, just suppressed the video. That does interfere with me being able to deliver on my promise, but I also don't trust that I could proceed on a 'stream only' basis in a serious way: I was right about YouTube's reaction and my gut tells me that if I drop the livestream part I'll suffer no further consequences, as far as my being able to post plugin videos and musicstreams.

Do you need me to risk losing my channel? Seems unlikely, but I want to hear whether I should. I would say, that would make sense if I was able to get a BIG audience for all this.

Do you need video? The most obvious solution here is for me to go right ahead, but in podcast form. I won't have to miss a week, I can do two hours, and I'll even be able to use more extended clips and be quieter during them (though I will refrain, still, from posting entire songs without voiceover: this is educational and you're not supposed to be able to rip music off any of it).

Would you prefer an hour, or is the two hours good?

I said this was going to happen, and it will. I most likely will have to just plain self-host all of it, which won't cause problems for me for a while. This information needs to get out and I'm dead serious. Let me know what you can accept, and if anyone needed me to be able to do it on YouTube, you can absolutely drop back off the Patreon and I won't hold it against you. I tried and it's seriously dangerous, plus only a very few will be able to enjoy that as the streams get nuked off YouTube instantly, sometimes even before the stream is over. I have to come up with something that people can actually hear, and where automated copyright stuff can't hit it.

If you want to skip to the first appearance of White Album audio in the mp3, it's at 28:50. I'm improving the bass content of the vinyl playback, and in future I can make relatively high-quality mp3 (as such things go) off 24-bit capture and the podcast will be better at presenting what's there on the vinyl. Two extra lossy-encodings are not helping the first podcast any, but we have no choice thanks to YouTube.

Let me know what you think. Once I've got a format, I'll post on Patreon or Discord (or Airwindows.com itself, or all of them) the full list of available records, and we'll be off and running. I think you'll enjoy this once I've got some of the technical stuff sorted (though it will never be 'listening', it's educational: it's a podcast with audio excerpts to illustrate points)
