While I honestly don't think the lives of the people in the district was high on his list of reasons for acting, it would have been kind of heartless not to do something, if even to be a distraction, to prevent the devastation of the area. The Britannians really don't care. They're just out to defeat the terrorists.
And then that conversation with his father. How cruel. We talked about what he meant by being "dead the moment he was born." I'm still not fully sure if we got it right in our interpretation. What do you think they mean by this?

Charles cared for Marianne but didn't really for the children. Marianne alive could've schemed to make Lelouch's spot in line higher. Her death meant that he was gonna be a forgotten prince and he did not have a powerful family to back him up. The Ashfords are a small aristocratic family that was closely tied to Marianne, so their power also rested in her being alive. They also likely became her adoptive family so that she could become an Imperial Consort. This is common practice amongst aristocratic families irl. If you watch enough Chinese and Korean historical dramas, you'll know that whenever a monarch wants to marry a commoner, they have an aristocratic family adopt the commoner so that her status in the books is that of an aristocrat and therefore not mar the reputation of the royal family.
