not really, just needed to make the solution more conductive. Making it alkaline helps to etch off the aluminum oxide layer present on aluminum metal. Baking soda alone would work but it doesn't dissolve very much so the solution isn't as conductive as it would be if you used salt. Using salt alone would work, but without the etching action of baking soda the reaction goes slowly. So using them together tends to give better results

I was just wondering if there was any significance to the ion choice, and why not just salt or baking soda without the other? I stink at gen chem, so I (re)learn a lot from these videos!
