Kings Journal special: Previous Rewards

I have been asked several times if it is possible to get previous rewards or if I plan to sell them somewhere.
I decided to answer these questions in a Journal to share these informations with all of you.

Let´ s start with the probably most interesting answer:
Yes, you can get previous rewards. For a donation to my creative work in general I show my gratitude with the rewards you are interested in.
I offer a donation-discount on older works and you can ask me for individual images, if you look for a certain character.

Let´ s go on:
Yes, I plan to sell my art somewhere else, but there is a "but".

The "but" explanation:
Fanart is a gray zone of copyrights.
Some see fanart as free advertising for their creations and others
see fanart as a threat.
Example:
If I draw Joel from TLOU I hold the copyright to my image, but Naughty Dog holds the original copyright of the character and the game.
Result: Two or more copyright holders.

If I start to sell fanart I risk to leave the safe gray zone, because I make profit with content that is not really my property.
Remember that "Private use explanation" in my rewards?! It saves your butt as well as mine from hurting copyright laws. ;)
Some artsist who also draw fanart have a shop at Gumroad for example and declare their work as parody to expand the gray zone under the protection of the word "parody". That is a possibility and we all know porn parodies of movies like Star Wars or Batman. But "parody" has meanings and if your work does not contains enough of them you are not creating parodies so the protection vanishes.

Another option to sell fanart is to offer a product, that´ s my property and as a bonus gift you get fanart, when you buy it. Gifts are free from any copyright or profit so I would not leave the gray zone.
I have to confess, that this idea is tempting and I already figured how I could do so in a charming way, but there is some part in my mind that is not convinced. XD
Not to mention that this infos might inspire you to make profit with fanart. XD

But I have creations I can sell and I plan to do so in the future.
Guess the answer?!
My original characters. This year I am going to create more of them and I plan to draw comics. I want to create a balance between fanart and original content. That step might strengthen my position in the bara/furry community and it offers me the opportunity to share more of my creative ideas with you.

But what about Patreon and fanart?
Patreon is a donation system and donations do not hurt copyrights.
That´ s why it is popular among (fanart) artists.

In conclusion:
No matter if doing commissions or creating fanart in general, there will
always be critical voices. The gray zone of fanart is not determined and words like parody or more and more fanart sellers change the perception of the whole topic.

At last I wonder about your opinion on selling fanart and it would be nice if you share your thoughts in the comment section.
My opinion on fanart is simple.
A developer creates a sfw game - I create adult fanart. We do not hurt each other, because we offer different things. I advertise another persons creation and we both benefit. But I know, that this is not the law of copyright.

Thank you for clarifying this! Makes complete sense. :-)

Great journal! Really explain a lot more about how the artist selling art process work, I learned some interesting stuff haha! Fanarts are great but I'm totally looking foward to your original characters! Specially with products and all that on the future, will be amazing! =D

Thank you very much Eight Phases!! ^w^ That encourages me to develop more original content. I think oc stuff adds (more) volume to my work and as you say it might offer more diverse guys. ^^

Greeneyedwolfking

I would be greatly interested in more of your original characters. OwO I find that concept more appealing than only fanart, especially so because not everyone likes the same characters. ^w^ <3
