I think Elizabeth’s mother was getting offered food in exchange for marriage basically, but she said no. They were trying to show that Elizabeth never knew a real partner she could count on or her family could count on. That’s why Philip protecting her and being so loyal to her means so much. That’s why I love that scene of her opening up and being vulnerable with Philip bc Elizabeth just doesn’t do that normally, she’s always so tough. But she appreciates Philip’s loyalty to her and their kids and how he’d do anything for them so she shared her emotions and opened up.
