2023-12-20 23:12:54 +0000 UTCGreat reaction! Finnick's backstory is genuinely one of the saddest in the series. The movies take away a lot of the emphasis on it that the books have. In the books, Katniss never sees the rescue happen and since the books are from her perspective, we never see it either. All of the focus is on what Finnick is saying in his speech. He is telling the truth about what happened and you weren't reading too much into it. Finnick's body was sold to all of the elites in the Capitol after he won. It's also important to note that he was 14 when he won and was the youngest victor ever. There is a quote that Katniss says that makes it seem like they waited till he was 16 to sell him but I find this hard to believe. I think based on what we have already seen the Capitol do, it's not far-fetched to think it happened before that but just wasn't televised. As Finnick said, he wasn't the only one but he was the most popular(Haymitch wasn't sold because Snow killed his family, so there was no one to use against him). I also think it's important to talk about what a lot of people say about Johanna. She refused to be sold and so her whole family was killed. Finnick's family is never mentioned and Johanna actually says that Mags is half of his family and Annie is the other half. Snow could use Annie and Mags as leverage against him but the rest of his family is likely dead. I also hate how they make it seem like Finnick's propo doesn't work by them losing their signal. Finnick's propo distracts the Capitol as well as Snow and Katniss is not needed in that moment. I think having Katniss come in there takes away the weight of what Finnick is saying. Another part of the book that didn't transfer over well is just how close Finnick and Katniss get during this time in the book. Finnick is going through the same things as her and therefore they lean on each other a lot. While Katniss definitely cares about Gale, I think she moves away from him as her emotional support. I think it also helps that Finnick understands Snow and can therefore comfort her more about everything happening with Peeta. Anyway, great reaction I just thought I would add some context!
