In the books, the three-eyed bird is a Raven. For whatever reason, though, they changed it to a Crow in the show. Also, what Cat/Catelyn did was kinda stupid, especially since she had no real proof of Tyrion trying to kill her son. She just had a dagger that was supposedly "his," which could easily be a lie by Littlefinger, like you said.
