There is a lot of religious bullshit in AA but when I worked the program I worked as an out and open atheist without issue. There should be more secular programs and I suppose it helped that I had already did 60 days (part on restriction and part in the Navy Alcohol Rehab Command inpatient treatment) before I started going to meetings. I only spent about 9 months in before I went my own way. I changed a lot of my habits and friends to the point that by the time I was leaving the Navy I didn't have any friends who had ever seen me drink.
