To add to what was said above, I will also say that he was feeling what he was feeling (Luke) because he was feeling some symptoms of Nell being dead. He kept saying he felt cold. Cold probably like a dead body.

He lost her "cold turkey" due to her suicide and despite not realizing quite what happened immediately, his body started feeling the effects of no longer sensing the connection between both of them and went into withdrawal.
